Beginning my college search, I had no idea what I wanted from the future, let alone from a school. Having blocked the concept of the ‘future’ from my brain, I was going into my college search blind. I needed to start somewhere, so I decided to pick a major, and base my decision off that. From a young age, I was always told I should become a news anchor, so I began researching schools with superior communications programs. Of course, Boston University was on every list or article I encountered. With every new piece of information I learned about the school, the more certain I became that it was the place for me. The only problem was that this dream school was about 1,000 miles away. In my sleepy hometown, it’s rare for people to go as far as
My College and Career goals include graduating college and getting a job. I wish to attend the University of Alabama. I plan to major in occupational therapy or speech therapy. After I graduate with my bachelor's degree I wish to get my master's degree. After I finish my schooling I want to receive a job that allows me to provide for my family. I wish to receive this job in my degree's field. After receiving this job I wish to improve to reach a leadership role.
Entering community college with little programming experience, I was eager to learn. I registered for my first programming class excited, with a fresh mind. My professor introduced the class to our first program, "Hello World." Instantly, I was hooked. As I uncovered the complexities of problem-solving and the importance of proper syntax, my love grew stronger. Eventually, with experience in C++ and JAVA, another professor presented a life changing opportunity to me.
After recently graduating from Fullerton College with two associate degrees in psychology, I could have not accomplished this goal all by myself without the proper guidance that I received from EOPS and FYSI at the time. These programs were established to support former foster youth at Fullerton College in their education as long as they met all the conditions for each semester. As a result, this was valuable for me during my time as a community college student, allowing me to guarantee that I would finish all my requirements on time to transfer to a good university, and becoming more involved with the campus each semester. That being said, this is one of the main reasons as to why I am applying to your program, so I could receive the support
Going into college, I knew that there will be an abundance of life lessons learned, but I did not ken that I would be able to absorb so much in such a short duration. This past year in college, I gained vital skills and grew stronger mentally. College is a place where everyone learns from their failures and successes, and with that, there are numerous things to learn from that. My experiences in college edified me how to work with others, communicate with professionals efficaciously, and make perdurable relationships. In addition, being away from home and living in an unfamiliar environment without my family availed me to become independent. Surviving on my own, I learned to make my bed, cook, do laundry, clean up after myself, and more. College taught me skills beyond the classroom, and it withal a leeway to becoming independent away
Ever since I was a kid I have always thought about what college I was eventually going to go to. I made the decision in high school that I wanted to be a special education teacher, so I thought about some schools that had that teaching program. My number one school I wanted to attend that had the best teaching program was East Carolina University. Having ECU as my number one choice lead me to apply there. Weeks after I applied I got a letter telling me some sad news that I was not accepted. Since I applied to ECU and did not get in, I was now thinking about applying to other schools like Methodist University or maybe a community college.
Going to a private school with my brother, I wasn't prepared for the financial difficulties that would arise for my family and I. After getting accustomed to the my classes, professors, and curriculum my freshman year; I fell in love with Baylor. I didn't think my family would struggle to make ends meet. By my sophomore year, my parents got into an accident and hospital expenses would force both my brother and I to a community college. Due to the uniqueness of my major in Texas and my goal to graduate in four years, I was determined to finish at Baylor. I began working as much as I could to help relief some of the finances off of my parents. My summers went to balancing classes and working full-time to raise money for the upcoming school year.
Working your way through college can be a daunting journey to say the least. There have been a myriad of challenges to overcome, both foreseen and unexpected. A year and half ago I decided to follow my dream of moving to California and obtaining a degree in engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. The decision to follow my passion for science invoked both fear and excitement within myself. I didn’t have the support of many friends and family, as I am originally from the East Coast, many of them seen my moving to California as an unrealistic and unnecessary goal. Despite my own self-doubts and the discouragement of my family I made the decision to relocate to California. That decision manifested the most significant chapter in my life to date. In an extremely short period of time I had to find an apartment, in the Bay Area, one of the most competitive and costly rental markets in the country as well as enroll in school, apply for aid and secure stable
As my senior year in high school began, my college search progress began as well. Initially, Cornell College was nowhere on my mind. I had no intentions of ever leaving the state I grew up in (Illinois). It wasn’t until I was contacted by Coach Wing about the possibility of playing baseball at Cornell. I still had no intentions of going to Cornell until I visited the school.
What college comes to mind when you think of your home for the next four years? As senior year begins, the thought of college starts to pop in everyone’s head. We usually have a long list of possibilities to choose from that fits us perfectly. One has to make the right decision for college because that’s where their next chapter begins. My list of potential colleges consists of University of Tennessee, Virginia Tech, or Coastal Carolina.
Finding the perfect college for yourself can be seen as a backbreaking experience because when you are looking there is never just one aspect that could determine whether a school would be a good fit for you. The two most important things an up and coming college student must look at are the social-emotional fit and academic. The social-emotional aspect is simply saying if you could ever see yourself at the college having a good time with lots of friends and the academics are does that college have the major and or minor you would like to study. The first school I will be looking at is Bethune-Cookman University it is a medium-sized,4 year, private liberal arts historically black college it is located in the small city of Daytona Beach, Florida
I was born on August 12th in Olympia Fields, Illinois to a family who already knew my path before I did. This family that I was born into is one that most would consider a very intelligent family. They were no strangers to getting good grades and multiple degrees and knew that I would go on to do the same, if not more. Even though I was born to teenage parents, my dad worked his hardest to finish high school and work to provide for me and my older sister and it did not stop my mom to go on to obtain her master’s degree. When the question is asked, “Did you feel prepared for college?” The answer is yes. I felt like I was prepared for college since I am a 4th generation college student
During my last few weeks in high school I was blessed with getting accepted into all four of my college choices including Sam Houston State University, Baylor College, Texas A&M Commerce, and Stephen F. Austin University. While touring schools and receiving financial aid packages I immediately turned down Texas A&M commerce and Baylor College. This of course left me with rival schools to choose between. After having the chance to tour Sam Houston I knew it was the school for me! The campus was beautiful and affordable, everyone I had spoken with was kind and knowledgeable, and I loved the fact that there was a wide variety of STEM majors I could choose between. I expected to graduate with my first degree in Health Sciences and go to medical
Obtaining my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration has been a vision of mine since I began my journey years ago; however, as life continued to get in the way, the dream I had seem to diminish. When I made the verdict to go to college I was straight out of high school and wasn’t equipped for it. Nonetheless, I was able to keep afloat I believe that you must condition yourself for the transition to college. Being a single mother I was in a continuous state of “mom mode” if you will and let my schooling be seated on the back burner for a while. Later on, I thought, enough was enough and went back only to have to leave once again to find a full-time job supporting a family of 4 when my father passed away from cancer. It was misfortunate,
College is something completely new to me;hence, I know that I will face numerous challenges because of my unfamiliarity with it. My College Readiness Program has warned us that we could probably be homesick at one point in our transition to college and I have a feeling that I will be homesick. However in order to ease my transition, I will step out of my comfort zone, join clubs, and meet new people this way I will make college my new home and not be homesick. During college, I may face myself having grades that I believe do not reflect my work and as advised by my College Readiness Program I will approach my professor during office hours to speak about why my grades are the way they are and to potentially find a way to boost my grade. College
Getting involved is extremely rewarding. From the memories made and the experience gained, my involvement in both high school and now in college has made me into the person I am today. As a freshman in college I got heavily involved because I was just so used to it from high school. I was even appointed to an executive position for our Student Activities board, a spot freshmen aren't normally considered for. Now, I'm a sophomore in college and currently studying accounting. I hope to either work for one of the Big 4 accounting firms or a firm that does accounting for film studios. This year I am a resident assistant as well as an officer for several organizations, continuing my involvement from last year. This scholarship would be a huge help
