Building Confidence and Competence as a Writer As a human being, we, all, strive daily to better ourselves, gain confidence, and become more competent. However, sometimes, we need help. So, where does that help come from? We can receive help from parents, teachers, siblings, peers, pastors, neighbors, or complete strangers, but what if there isn’t anyone available? We have access, to a world of knowledge, at our fingertips. Resources are everywhere, if we just open our eyes so that we can see, and our minds so that we can comprehend. The first thing, I do, as a writer, before I commence any project or assignment, is look for words that I do not comprehend, the meaning of. Then, I consult the Merriam-Webster online dictionary. Once
Hawthorne did not view women as unimportant or threatening to his works, but as men’s vital, emotional, intellectual, and sacred partners. As many famous biographers have established, women have often played crucial roles in Hawthorne’s novels and short stories. For example, female roles in his fiction were based on relationships who affected his professional life, including Elizabeth Peabody and Margaret Fuller. Throughout his short stories and romances, Hawthorne describes myriad characteristics of female roles. His impeccable design of having women depicted as principle roles instead of supporting or victim characters contributes to
My earliest experience with writing was my learning period that formed not only my style of writing but how I studied and the ability to apply words and concepts into a structured format. The process at first was difficult because it was my first time being exposed to structured writing which caused me to put it off until the last minute or lose interest in the topic I was writing about. The rowdy classroom was eager to release near the end of the day, but we knew we had to face one of the more uninteresting subjects of the day: middle school English. The teacher thoroughly explained our assignment which made each one of us cringe. The class finally initiated work mode and I was clueless. I would start to make progress but would be constantly
Political changes in this time period in East Asia included the fall of the Tang and the rise of the Song. The Tang dynasty was in the midst of internal rebellion and nomadic invasions (Martin 117). This eventually led to the abdication of the last emperor, causing the Tang to fall (Bentley and Ziegler 286). One major change during the Tang era was the rule of Wu Zhao, a female leader. This was surprising, considering the Confucian belief that women should not lead, but instead be lead by men.
What major skills has Jovita Carranza demonstrated in her career at UPS that have made her a successful leader?
When it comes to writing I have a mental breakdown, I get nervous, overthink, and emotionally stressed. These three words describe me as a writer. In high school I would have a difficult time starting papers, often times my weaknesses was grammar and sentences fragments. How I feel about writing is how I feel when a love one dies. It's like as if I'm at a funeral and my paper is the one being funeralized. I think the reason why I am how I am about writing is because my college English teacher in high school was so harsh on my papers, and ever since then I've been traumatize to write papers.
I believe I have grown a lot since the beginning of this course. My writing was severely lacking grammar and punctuation. I didn’t use any punctuation other than periods and very few commas spersed throughout my papers. My papers still need help in that area, but I have improved. I now know where they need to go and when it’s appropriate to use them. My papers aren’t exactly flawless but they are better than before. I would write how I speak at times and I knew it wasn’t right, but I would still do it because it allowed my papers to flow better in my mind. I read my papers out loud to help avoid my problem with writing how I speak. I’ve learned my writing style in this course, or lack thereof. I found a program that would benefit me now and
This piece of writing is a narrative writing piece, my aim is to create an atmosphere of fear and create an experience of the operation. In the writing, I used first person pronouns to show that was a first hand experience. I used I, me, and myself in this writing. I also used sensory details as the smell of the material in the operating room - the smell of anti-infective was strong and strange for me. It helps to create an atmosphere and makes the writing more authentic. I used colour adjectives to help the reader visualize the scenes – pale and blue watch. Furthermore, I also used the sounds to make my writing lively and vivid – “Tik-tok, tik-tok, tik-tok”
I started my freshman year at Bridgewater as a biology major. I had a full load of mainly biology core courses and a couple general education classes. When I took Effective Writing with Dr. Cook spring semester of my freshman year I realized that I wanted to work with and analyze real life situations. I wrote and researched how a tragedy leads to changes in the way people act and see things in a different perspective. I compared the how the victims of the plane crash of the Uruguayan rugby players, and the Chilean miners who were stuck in a mine reacted to everyday situations. The research and different writing opportunities made me realize that I was in the wrong field of study. After discussing several options with the academic dean, I declared
I switched back and forth between tabs as I waited for something new to appear, so it could entertain my mind. Why was no one online at three in the morning? And why did I still have an incomplete book in front of myself?
Today, I was given the worst news that I could have possibly been given at the age of 20, I cannot write. The feelings and emotions of disappointment and anger creepered into my head as my boss broke the news to me. While he was informing me of my needless word usage and horrific sentence structure, I thought, “Wow, previously before this very moment I was feeling ecstatic. I had been learning many things, more than I have learned during a week of college, and yet I fell short.” After crucially critiquing my skill level he had advised me to read “the elements of style.” After skimming through the first few pages, I knew that there was hope for me to become a better writer. So, instead of crying my eyes out, I set my goal which is becoming a
I am finding that I have more skill at writing than I had realized. Considering I have always felt that I am terrible at portraying myself and what is in my head, this has come as quite the pleasing surprise. Maybe it is the fact that this is my third attempt at Composition, maybe it’s just growth in general. Either way I am adapting and seeing the possibilities of what my skills may become.
For the past four years, I have been involved with the production of The Rubicon and RubicOnline, St. Paul Academy and Summit School’s monthly hybrid newsmagazine. During my time on staff, I learned how to lead, prioritize deadlines, and overcome obstacles.
My experience with writing instructors were exactly how this reading described them. They always told me to practice my grammar, so I could become a better writer. A writer to them was someone who could properly use syntax and grammar throughout their paper. I was one of the students who could not have a grammarless paper because my view of writing was different from my instructors. I learned the incorrect way of writing, the way that was imbedded in my English exams. The "professional way of writing is having no grammar mistakes" or the one where "writing does not change in your other classes". Something else that was deferent from my professor and I , was the view of writing in different classes. Each class had their own audience that required
My journey of becoming a good writer, I have faced many challenges. English being a second language, sacrificing time needed for a good essay paper, and being consistent in writing, has been many of my challenges of becoming a good writer. Repeatedly, I have come to understand that writing is a process, and I can become a better writer by writing more often, and reading novels and magazines.
For many years, they lived on campus in Margaret Nance because she was a RA and we laughed and talked about the highs and lows about living on campus; Summers used to be a driver for Pepsi and didn't have a clue to what he was doing when he first got the job, but has endurec being here over two decades. Alford worked here part-time while she attended Winthrop and after graduating she had a daughter five days later and decided to become full-time. Entering the building, one is blinded with awards from SCPA given to these great writers for the many great articles they've all written over the past 15 years. All in all, everyone seems content in what they do, but unfortunately, they haven't gotten a raise in nine years (how awful is that)?
