C.E. Mason drove directly home. At his driveway, C.E. Mason bailed out of the car, which he left parked on the street next to his driveway. The engine was idling. C.E. Mason sprinted across the driveway to his front door and let himself in. There was a leafy weeping willow tree between C.E. Mason’s car and his house. Roger drove up behind the car, using the tree to partially hide his car. This was an upscale neighborhood with a homeowner’s association and neighborhood watch. But even absent that, there was always the busybody neighbor peeking through the window to see what was going on. Roger was worried about neither: his rapidly returning strength and cognition had those concerns covered. But nothing happened. “The problem is the awesome power a person like you have. You could rule the world!” Margarita said with a tone of awe in her voice. “Hardly,” Roger responded matter-of-factly. “I’m not trying to rule the world.” “Nor am I.” Margarita replied immediately. Roger sensed insincerity in that statement. But her tone was so confident it drew Roger in to the deception she was weaving. Margarita was now the teacher. Roger was the student fascinated by her intellect. “We’re the new normal,” Margarita continued. “The neo-neurological norm. This is the next paradigm going forward in human brain evolution. Another point, you cannot know anything about us unless we want you to. You have to focus on us. But if you are working for me, on a task like looking for my husband, your focus is redirected. Diverted because you were empathizing with me, a grieving woman worried about the safety of her husband.
