I know what you are all thinking (fingers moving) You may know me by a couple of different names, Ursula or the Sea Witch. I don’t live in the sort of sea you think, full of coral, sea folk and waters filled with a blue radiance from the sun above. No I live in an underground land filled with treacherous whirlpools. See I use to live in the coral, swimming and playing along until those popular and likeable mermaids came along and kicked me out. So, since then every sea creature and mermaid, especially the Sea King, has been accusing me of lying, tricking, cursing and murder. And with the disappearance of the little mermaid. How can I be accused of such crimes when I was providing a service requested by your beautiful little mermaid? I am certain that I am not guilty for doing all of these terrible thing.
To begin with, when the little mermaid entered my house and I knew what she wanted. In other words, I have a crystal ball which shows me the past, present and future. She asked me to turn her into a human, the ugly things. When someone asks me for a favor, especially for a spell you can’t refuse or someone will get in trouble, me. I warned her, more than once, of one consequence, two the pain and three what will

I am not guilty! I am not a villain! I have not lied. I have not tricked. I have not made her disappear. I gave the little mermaid exactly what she asked for. I made her a human and now she is immortal.
These bubbles, these bubbles that turn to foam I see them as like I see you. You can count on me to help you with your troubles, but don’t expect me to show regret.
These bubbles, bubbling, popping, exploding into foam. You can count on me to help you with your troubles, but don’t expect me to show regret. Casting a spell upon you and will return home. Say these words ‘mermaids from the deep sea, ask the ocean to change me into something that swims, walks and sweats.’ Will you be the next one who I cast a spell
Cinderella and Little Mermaid are two of the most well known fairy tales of the 21st century. The two stories focus their attention on a young girl struggling to change who she is in order to marry the man of her dreams. However, the Disney version most people know and love are not the original tales. The true Grimm Brother’s Cinderella and Andersen’s Little Mermaid have much more dark and twisted endings than any Disney fan would like to believe. While the two stories start out in similar ways, a young girl longing to venture somewhere and experience what is unfamiliar to them, these stories end up going in two completely different directions. In both the Grimm Brother’s Cinderella and Andersen’s Little Mermaid the protagonist is exceptionally curious and, due to their curiosity, becomes willing to do anything in order to achieve their goal; however, the characters use two very different methods in order to try to reach their happily ever after.
In the story, “The Little Mermaid” there are demonstrations that describe what a heroine is. A female character that is noted for special achievements represents the heroine in a story. Therefore, the youngest mermaid “Little Mermaid” represents the heroine throughout the story. The Little Mermaid is a mystical creature that longs only to seek the handsome prince she laid eyes on. “Once she became human, the witch said she could never become a mermaid again” (Anderesens 185). This is an example of how the Little Mermaid chose to do something incredible and dangerous just to accomplish something she only dreamt of. Not only is the Little Mermaid the heroine of the story, but she also exemplifies other archetypal characteristics. An
The little mermaid, born into royalty as a princess, not only as the most beautiful voice on land and in the water, but posses a strong curiosity about life on land. Her infatuation with life on land is characterized by the rose garden she grew around a statue of a prince. Her “desire to leave the female dominated mer-world is already anticipated in her garden, which has as its center a male statue resembling the prince. The desire of the little mermaid to leave the mer-world, the work of the pre-Oepida mother, dominates the initial part of the story.” Despite the innocent and privileged life she lived as a mermaid in a matriarchal world, she longed to grow into adulthood, get married, and experience sexuality on land, where patriarchy was
Later, the little mermaid learns from her grandmother, the only way to gain a soul is to find a man and have him fall in love with her, so much that he would choose her over his parents, and marry him which would allow her to gain a soul. But this was impossible considering she has a tail and a man would not understand and would not find attractive (“The Little Mermaid”). The little mermaid was saddened by this and had wished she could be human, so she could be with the prince. Later, the little mermaid went to the sea witch, and was told she can get legs, but there were consequences. The sea witch warned the little mermaid that this was a foolish idea, but it was possible. She told the little mermaid that she would make a drought for her and when she goes above water, she must sit on a rock and drink the drought, thus eventually shrink her tail and give her legs. The sea witch told the little mermaid that when she gets her legs, it will feel like as if she were treading on sharp knives every step she took. The other consequence was the little mermaid had to give up her voice, which was done by having the witch cut her tongue off. The witch also warned the little mermaid that if the prince marries another woman, her heart will break, and she will die and turn into the foam that floats on the surface of the water (“The Little Mermaid”). The little mermaid agreed to all of this and allowed her tongue to be cut off and
I'm sure you've heard the story of Ariel, the little mermaid with crimson hair, a captivating voice, and mesmerizing blue eyes, and of how an evil sea witch stood in the way of her and the love of her life. However, you haven't heard my side of the story—the story of what truly happened, I am this so-called villain; I am Ursula.
As a self-identified woman, I too am simply another demeaned and discredited being in this patriarchy in which I call my world. Although certain situations may provoke a woman’s compliant submission to social conformation in order to avoid public scrutiny and deviance, it is crucial that women not let these human right violations go unnoticed without personal recognition and liability by the oppressive perpetuator. Disney’s version of The Little Mermaid discredits any acknowledgement of women’s intellectualism and spiritual depth, but rather objectively localizes their superficial features, such as their physical biology like their bodies, their appearance, and their voice. This was intensely displayed at the inaugural beginning of the film when the Prince’s conditional love for Arial was emanated by her enchanting voice despite the lack of
. Before making her decision, the Little Mermaid is warned by the Sea Witch about the terrible hardships she will face ahead. The Little Mermaid is told that she will be exiled from the sea, never allowed to return again and that she will experience tremendous pain and suffering for becoming human. The Sea which then goes on to explains that the Little Mermaid must make the prince fall in love with her and get married in order for her to gain a human soul. However, if the prince marries another woman then the Littler Mermaid will pay for her failure with her own life. The Sea Witch prophesied that on the sunrise of the prince’s wedding day, to another woman, the Little Mermaid will die from heartbreak and then will turn into sea foam making
She becomes unhappy because she wants immortality. She would not be able to “hear the music of the waves or see the flowers and the burning red sun” (Andersen 66). The little mermaid never mentions anything about the prince upon learning that humans have immortal souls. It was not until the grandmother offer the little mermaid an impossible solution. The grandmother said “Only if a man should fall so much in love with you that you were dearer to him than his mother and father; and he care so much for you that all his thoughts were of his love for you; and he let a priest take his right hand and put it in yours, while he promised to be eternally true to you, then his soul would flow into your body” (Andersen 66). Although the little mermaid is in distress, she could not bear living without the prince and an immortal soul. Her newfound determination found the courage to visit the sea witch to help her become human. She traded her tongue for the witch’s potion which transform her fishtail into human legs, but not without pain for every time she walks, “it will feel as though you were walking on knives so sharp that your blood must flow” (Andersen 68). The little mermaid sacrifice her voice, her family, and her home base on her yearning for an eternal soul that she may or may not obtain depending on the prince. She put her hopes and dreams on the prince despite the fact that the prince does not know that she
With the common man’s admiration for fairy tales, it is simple to look past the manipulation that authors often employ into their stories. Nevertheless, it is there. In discussions of the Little Mermaid, it is questionable whether the ending of the Disney version or the ending of the Hans Christian Andersen version is more motivated toward manipulating children into behaving well. On the one hand, some argue that the Disney version utilizes more of the classic methods of manipulation. On the other hand, some contend that although the Hans Christian Andersen version applies fewer methods, it emphasizes its methods more than the Disney version does. Others even maintain that there is no manipulation in play at all. My own view is that both versions of the Little Mermaid exhibit an equal desire to manipulate children into being good.
In Old English, “mere” means the ‘sea’ and “maid” means ‘woman.’ Mermaids are thought to as the descendants of ancient deities such as Oannes - the Babylonian fish-tailed god – and Atargatis
mermaids were in disguise walking among us human on land. After my discovery I still took into consideration that these mermaids in disguise would most likely be found near a body of water. I spent my every waking moment at the ocean closet to my house. After a week of being at the beach and observing people I found a mermaid. She came to the beach every day, but I had to be certain that she was a mermaid, so I waited a month and my hypothesis was correct. Every time she the water touched her legs she turned into a mermaid, it was true I had seen it with my own eyes. Seeing that beautiful tail made shivers run down my spine, and the euphoria gave me hope. I knew I had to have her as the first mermaid in my collection. I knew that the mermaids that I collected would not be comfortable in their tanks at first and have to adjust to their new homes. Considering that in the ocean they were free animals. I had to keep this in mind when I was collecting her, so I used chloroform to make her sleep. I did not want to have trouble transporting her into her new home. She did not like her new home, she tried to leave the tank multiple times, so she forced me to attach a chain to her hand. She would not eat I food I fed
Big foot and monsters are mythical beasts that have always been seen as fairy tales. No one ever knows whether these legends exist or not. However some of the ancient legends might be truer than we believe. Mermaids are one of the legends that caught world’s attention for ages. A mermaid is said as a creature that is half human and half fish; they have lower body of a fish and the upper body of a normal human. According to the legend, mermaids are considered beautiful creatures and have attractive looks, blind by the good looks they overcome the scales and fish tail which someone would find repulsive. The word ‘mermaid’ brings the meaning of ‘mer’; the sea as in the ancient English, and ‘maid’ as the meaning of female. The big question here is do mermaids really exist or is it just a never ending myths? In this essay, you will know about the sighting reports about mermaid from many resources, and the reasons why mermaid cannot exist in this world.
Beliefs are a tricky thing to argue in society today. People’s opinions are drastically different with all the technology and information accessible and anything can be attempted to be proved true or untrue. Throughout history, mythical creatures have been a big idea in the human mind. It started out in fairy tales and novels in the early centuries of time and has transformed greatly into the 21st century. People often see and hear about these un-human-like creatures in movies, books and even the news today. They are vividly shown to be these believable creatures hiding within society. A largely discussed mythological creature is the mermaid. The idea of mermaids has been around for centuries and was a big aspect in fairy tale stories.
In my dreams a mermaid comes to me. She is not like the little mermaid or aquamarine, she is much more than just a human with a fin instead of legs. She has long hair tangled with sea weed, her face is beautiful yet is not the face of a human. She has gills on her neck, and from her chest down she is covered in beautiful shiny scales which flow gracefully over her long green tail. She's more fish that human, and unlike these other famous mermaids she never dreams of leaving the ocean. To her, land is an unnatural combination of man made works; she has no desire to leave the wide, beautiful ocean. She comes to me in my dreams and calls me to the sea. When I’m far from the ocean her song gets quieter, but it is always there. I believe that she is a part of my soul, and without her I am not myself. She is the side of me that
Here’s my side of the story, to all of you who were wondering. I swear I’m not a ‘villain’ or whatever they call it these days. I used to be a normal girl just like her, beautiful locks of hair that flowed perfectly under the water, I had these eyes that glowed and sparkled just like the way the sun sparkles through the water. Not to brag, but I was pure perfection; until, a new little mermaid was born and started to grow up to be everything but a crawfish. I grew strong with envy and jealously, then I began to wonder for help. I came across this myth that said this powerful sea creature could turn me more beautiful than the sunset, so I took up the offer. Let’s just keep this scenario short and say that the creature was real and the creature was a very good liar. Well, you guys all know how I ended up looking… like the mean ole purple witch.
