Personal Narrative: Drones

It was my 16th birthday and my parents had decided to gift me a drone, thinking that I was responsible enough to use it without breaking it. All I can say is that they were mistaken. A few days after my birthday, I took the drone out for a flight and, me being an ignorant teenager, decided to fly the drone at top speeds without knowing how to control it properly. I ended up crashing the drone into my neighbor’s roof and hitting a tree before the drone landed. The drone was a monstrosity with pieces of wire hanging out, and the frame disfigured beyond belief. Out of fear of what my parents were going to do to me, I hid the drone in my garage and just acted like nothing had happened. The first thing I did, of course, was attempt to acquire a free one from the company, but that was a failed endeavor. I had only one choice: FIX THE DRONE. The first thing I did was dismantle the drone, or at least what was left of it, to see how the drone operated. 2 DC motors weren’t working so I went on YouTube to learn how to fix these motors, and I ended up getting them operating again. Another problem was the shattered frame of the drone. It was cracked and bent so badly that the drone couldn’t go airborne anymore. To fix this, I read up on some basic aerodynamics and I studied pictures of how the frame looked before the accident. I was/am an active member of the Museum of Science and Industries Wagner Family Fab Lab so I was given access to its 3d Printers and Laser Cutters to create my own parts. I also knew how to use their respective software Autodesk Inventor and Inkscape. I designed propellers using polypropylene which is a light and durable plastic and I created the missing parts of the frame on the 3d Printer. Once I was finished, I didn’t just have a drone.
