… Beep beep! The cars zoom past Pearl on the city streets, the wind tossing around her freshly cut hair. Pearl is walking back to work after donating ten inches of her hair to Wigs for Kids, an organization that makes wigs for children with cancer. As Pearl walks, she slows her brisk pace and stops to give an elderly veteran a couple dollars. “Thank you, Miss,” the veteran says gratefully. “No problem, Sir,” Pearl replies with a kind smile as she picks up speed. When Pearl reaches the firehouse, there is not much to do. She asks the Chief if he needs any help washing the fire truck, but he says, “No, thanks.” Bored, Pearl walks to the lounge. In the lounge, she finds Rafael and Nora. “Hey guys!” Pearl says happily, “How have you been?” “Not bad,” Rafael responds. “Just peachy!” Nora answers, enthusiastically. A couple is standing at the end of the driveway, looking worried. Once the truck comes to a complete stop, everyone hops out and gets to work, doing their jobs. Pearl’s job is to rescue anyone from inside the building. Pearl breaks the door down immediately and spots a set of stairs. She darts up the stairs, and at the landing she hears a muffled cry. She follows the noise to a door and walks in. On the bed, she sees a small boy, curled up in a ball. She walks over and picks him up. Pearl asks the child if he has any siblings; he answers no. She then darts downstairs and outside, with Rafael and Nora right behind her. The fire is put out, but the house looks like it might tumble to the ground. It starts making creaking and groaning sounds, and the boy starts crying. Pearl hands the crying child to his mother. With one last screech, the family’s home crumbles into a pile of dust and
