If I had a ticket in my hand, I could travel to Nigeria to get in touch with my native culture or to Mecca to get in touch with my spiritual side, but I would rather travel to a place that is surrounded by the elements that I am passionate about. It turns out that music and black culture are such elements that I am passionate about. Therefore, if I had a ticket in my hand as if this very moment, I would be on the next flight to Atlanta, Georgia. Why Atlanta, you might ask? Well, because Atlanta is extremely rich in culture, not just any culture, but black culture to be more specific. When you turn on the radio, more than half the rappers you hear are using the Atlanta style of rap, or are Atlantans themselves. Groups such as Outkast and the

When you envision a place called Twin City you may think about it being a big place, I
This year’s family vacation was one for the books. With my aunt living in Tennessee, we do not get together as often as we would like so my family decided to go to Nashville, Tennessee. When we started our trip, it was 6 a.m. and it was nothing short of fun and laughter along the way. Never having been to Tennessee before, I figured I’d enjoy the eight-hour ride of sight-seeing and laughter with my family. When we were a few miles into the trip, the mountains of Georgia were breathtaking. While I was enjoying the scenery, another thing that I found enjoyable about this trip was the conversation that I had with my family. We went on talking about life in general, all the struggles, and childhood memories that we had. We even talked about years
Many of the harsh dilemmas I encountered that were directly related to me conceding to abuse alcohol, existed well in advance of my decision to relocate to Atlanta, Ga. In fact, from what I'm able to ascertain by way of reliable sources, including my wife, is that my primary motive for leaning more towards this decision was to find help for the perils and perplexed conditions in which my life had twirled into. Initially, though I was unable to interpret the chaotic turn of events, or the uncivil behaviors I came to embrace, it appeared that everyone else around me were solely aware of them and were also jointly convinced that the only way out for me was to seek professional guidance. Their wrath about me drinking as heavily as I did were
As a child I was Boston born but Georgia raised. My mom says I moved to Georgia when I was 2 but since I was 2 I don’t remember. I stayed in Georgia for 8 years and when I was ten my family moved back to Boston because my mother got tired of Georgia. I had never lived in Boston after I was born so when I got here I didn't know anyone besides family or any of the places. My first year here in Boston I lived in-for lack of a better weird-the hood. I was from Georgia the parts where the worse thing that ever happened to me was a school lockdown because they thought fireworks were gunshots. When I came to Boston it was a totally different scenery. I was scared to go everywhere and/or do anything. I lived in Mattapan kinda near Blue Hill Ave. to give you some imagery. The corner store I lived near was more than “a corner” away. But as well it wasn't a mile away either. I was scared mostly because the street I had to walk down to get to the corner store was full of houses blocking the light and wasn't ever that busy.
Have you ever been to six flags? It's located in Atlanta Georgia and it is filled with amazing rides and superhero merchandise and souvenirs. Six flags atlanta has rides that make you wanna run away from it or just wanna to get on and make yourself sick after repeating.
I was 12 year old when I started playing basketball. My dream was to be similar to Michael Jordan. However, my GBL team has lost every game since I’ve started playing basketball. I was also playing with my older brother Jeremiah for the first time, but we were always fighting about whose better. I knew this season would bring us together. With a lot of hard work we finally won. It took me and my brother to work together to win.
In 2014 of October I moved to Georgia from Florida. I was leaving a place I had been living in my entire life. It was a tough situation as I knew moving to a different state and school could be difficult. I was very nervous as it was a new environment with different people and new types of school work. I was worried about not making friends or getting bad grades. That morning of school my heart raced. When I arrived at school I met new people and my teachers, I also figured out which teachers were bad and what teachers would be good. I left school that day very happy knowing I would have a great year. Later that week I started to become more familiar with the grading systems, behavior system and connections. at my old school they were called
As the decade of the 1970’s came to an end, a new Black music emerged like much of the others - wrapped in social realities of an genuinely Black experience. Rap/Hip Hop bursted on the seams relating many of the same political messages and ideologies heard decades before. Echoing the Black Power movement and using the musical culture as a way to rebuild Black communities constantly under attack, rap brought real life stories of an urban, younger
It was the day we were leaving for Florida for a U16 soccer tournament in West Palm Beach, July 2nd to be precise. A drive to Florida from where we live takes around 18 hours. We finished supper at 5:30, completed packing, and were on the road at 6:30. We were traveling south on Interstate 83. Nothing much to see as we were driving down the highway. A few trees here and there, and a wide variety of fields that were thriving with crops.
Since Old School’s Hip Hop conception, the genre has gone way beyond what the genre’s originators could have imagined. Each period since the founding of Hip Hop has added to the evolution of the culture and have altered it into something that is more than just a hobby, but a mindset and a part of life that cannot be separated from many different cultures globally. In 1977, popular Hip Hop MCs and Djs lived in poverty in New York and in 2016 artist like Sean Combs, Dr. Dre, and Jay-Z are worth $2.07 billion combined (Greenburg, 2016). A genre and culture that stemmed in a way of healing and release in the black and latino community in New York is now an international commodity and has proven that Hip Hop is not going anywhere. Several of Hip Hop’s characteristics have guided the evolution in these past 40 years, like the value of being family-oriented, authentic and the content of the lyrics, have made Hip Hop into a genre that has a large enough variety to have something for every any audience that enjoys music.
While I do work and spend all my free time in the City, it wasn't until I heard about Talib Kweli's series of shows at the world-famous Blue Note that I started to think again about growing up in the 1980's Brooklyn and the hip hop culture that I was unknowingly immersed. I thought
In life have you ever been stuck in a sticky situation, lost between two paths? You want to take both but you can’t. You have to make a choice soon or later. These past few months have been really rough for me. In December 2017, my mom and brother have been looking for another plant job. Somehow my brother stumbled upon a job in Savannah, Georgia. When my mom first told me about the job she said it was in Atlanta, Georgia. She asked my sister and I would we want to move to Atlanta with her when she gets the job. Of course, I said yes, my favorite group “The Migos” lives in Atlanta. Not long afterwards she texted me and said the job is in Savannah, Ga not Atlanta. At this point, I was a little upset because I started looking for houses and colleges in Atlanta. I did a little research and found out that Atlanta is two hours away from Savannah. Shortly, I realized it doesn’t make sense for my sister and I to switch schools because they are only going to
Have you ever tried new food that was horrible? I did and I wasn’t what I expected it to be. I had just entered Atlanta Georgia, and it was filled with giant, bright, shiny lights. It was lots of traffic and everybody was hungry.
