The crisp leaves crunched satisfyingly beneath Jack’s sneakers. He loved the fall, with its dryer days and cooler nights, and the leaves changing and falling gracefully to the ground. Alex walked beside him, hands buried deep into the pockets of his red leather jacket and a gray beanie pulled over his messy hair. He had been unusually quiet for the past couple of days, especially now, which was strange because a walk around the park had been his idea. It was obvious that he was deeply troubled by something. Jack sighed and looked away from him, staring up at the sky instead. There wasn’t a cloud to be seen in the pale blue. A V-shaped flock of birds flew past, honking and headed for a warmer climate. He couldn’t help but feel a little envious. …show more content…
He only cared about what was going on inside of Alex’s head. They had a wonderful, yet surprising relationship. They’d been best friends for years, even starting a band with two other close friends. Two falls ago, much like this one, their relationship took a delightfully unexpected turn. Jack glanced at him again. Alex’s eyes were on the ground; he was totally and completely lost in thought. If the path hadn’t been there to guide him, he probably would have fallen into the pond. Jack smiled at the thought, but the worry probing at his mind erased the smile almost immediately.
Fear and worry was always present, though Jack rarely acknowledged it. Their relationship wasn’t always easy. It had caused conflict between family and friends, though most had been mended. They fought repeatedly—Jack complained about the stupidest things, and Alex was occasionally moody. Sometimes, they went days without speaking after an argument. Of course, they always made up, in the most fantastic way possible.
A gust of wind caught Alex’s gray scarf and blew the fringe back chaotically. Jack forced himself to swallow his growing anxiety and stomped his foot down on a bright orange leaf that drifted down in front of

“Yeah?”
“Could I…I need to ask you something.”
Jack nodded, although he was a little surprised at the use of the word “ask.” He had been expecting a “tell,” or maybe a, “we need to talk.” Jack pulled his brown jacket more closely to his suddenly cold body. He looked back at Alex and admitted to himself that he wasn’t ready for this, that he was never going to be ready. Alex meant everything to him.
His fists clenched in his pockets and he locked eyes with Alex. He could remember those honey eyes dark with lust, sparkling with laughter, and flaring with anger. Just the very thought of never seeing those emotions in Alex’s eyes ever again made him feel sick to his stomach.
Alex looked up and down the path as if checking for other people who might be nearby, swallowed hard, and stepped closer. “Jack,” he said, his voice cracking. Jack forced himself not to have a panic attack in the middle of the goddamn park and fought the crazy urge to run in order to avoid whatever it was that Alex needed to say.
Running was suddenly no longer an option when Alex’s left hand gripped Jack’s sleeve as he lowered himself to the ground. Jack almost thought that Alex was falling, until he landed on one knee, staring up at Jack with that serious expression on his face. Alex’s other hand came out of his pocket, clenched around something
This was after Alex left Franz and continued on his nomadic journey. This is another example showing that Alex does not need relationships to live a fulfilling life. He was running away from the relationship; he was just continuing on with his life journey to reach Alaska. This is where he belonged, this is where the journey of life would take
After Mike explained the situation, Alex was silent for a long time and then finally said:
While reading this book, I got most involved when the author would talk about “Alex” and all the many emotions he felt while living his new life driven on impulse.
It must have been awfully hard to send his beloved sister into the unknown. Nonetheless, he knew he had to take his chances. Otherwise Julie would have grown weak without the take in of calories. That was a time where Alex had to choose whose love he was going to share with which sister. I hope I never have to choose.
Jack being speechless demonstrates how shocked he is that Al has so much control over him, after all they used to be friends, almost equals. In society men are told they must always be in control, this leads to Jack believing he must
“Here, I found you a present,” Jack said with a evil chuckle. He takes the article, that Jane said to look at, and starts to read. As he is reading, he face expression starts to change to a worried scared expression.
Alex shows this theme through his decisions in the book. At the beginning of the book he only cared about himself but as he is alone for awhile and then meets Darla he seems to care more for other people he meets, than for himself. He gives more then he gets. He gave little Katie's family food and was there for them when she died. Darla started making decisions like an adult even when her mother was alive. She made food and harvested corn. Darla grew up quickly when they were still on the farm. Alex and Darla grew up when they were with one another. They cared for eachother almost as if they were married. They cooked and traveled well and didn’t let little things bother them. Also after Alex killed multiple people he almost became not as soft as he was. He grew up a lot through killing multiple people, after this he seemed not as afraid to stand up for himself and Darla.
In the book Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer, Krakauer writes about Christopher McCandless, a young man who drops everything in his life to go travel throughout the states and end up in Alaska to find the truth to his questions. But did Chris find the truth he desperately desired? Some would say that McCandless did, other would say that he has wasted his time and was being ignorant and stupid. I agree with the author, Jon Krakauer, that Christopher McCandless was not a crazy lunatic, a sociopath, or an outcast because he had made lots of friends while traveling, but there were times when Chris was incompetent, even though he managed to stay alive for quite awhile. Christopher McCandless had a pretty normal childhood.
“I can see you need a moment. I’ll leave you be for a while, and then the test can begin.” He picks up the chair and turns to walk away but stops and faces me again. “Oh yes, and before I forget, the key to that nightstand is in your back pocket. You’re going to want what is in there, trust me.” My joints start to shake up and down my body. “See you soon Alex.” he says, but I hardly hear him as my knees give out underneath me and body goes
“Alex.” When Jeep whispers his name his voice is rough and low, like his father hasn’t had a drop of water in all time he’s been missing.
“Hello?” called a voice. Adam, Aurelia thought, her mind jumping to the boy she had met the day before. She opened the door, and there he was. He looked upset.
She was worried about him? Why? He waited for an answer and then remembered she could no longer read his mind. She began pulling him, her back toward the opening. That was too dangerous.
Jack was waiting for something, he knew. The man was taking deep, uneven breaths. Staring at floor, as if even he couldn’t believe what he had just put on the table.
She turned around and stated the first thing that came to mind, “I am just thinking about the times that Patrick and I have had. He was a lovely man.” Jack didn’t believe that one bit.
It was the next morning. James had spent the night and had given up hope that Alex would come back. Alex’s older sister, Amy (whom Alex lived with) was worried as well.
