Personal Narrative: Future Physical Therapy

In order to “improve the human experience,” I feel as a future physical therapist I would establish a personal connection with the patient to better understand and validate their experience. Once I have complete knowledge of the individual’s circumstances, I would develop a treatment plan that will ultimately allow the patient to reach their highest potential of mobility. I believe staying current with research and new methods of treatment ensure the most effective treatment plans.
It is critical as a future physical therapist I recognize the body’s full potential to set the standard for recovery. I will evaluate the individual’s lifestyle and generate the best practice techniques in diagnosing and measuring the most advantageous outcome. …show more content…

Nager syndrome is an inherited disorder that causes craniofacial abnormalities. This patient kept growing bone in her mouth and had ear growth malfunctions, making it very difficult to speak and hear. With these and other effects of Nager, the young patient seemed to have lost hope in ever hearing or speaking again. The therapist I was observing made goals each appointment, which they aimed to meet. She said it was easier this way for children because they respond better to rewards and small praises. Since this syndrome is very rare and the therapist was not familiar with it, she learned to adapt and research new methods of treatment for a disease such as this. The therapist acquired new techniques for this individual such as teaching her how to mobilize her mouth again after surgery by pretending to blow out candles, mouthing the lyrics to the song Happy Birthday, and learning to use the talk-to-text method with new technology. These exercises work well to get the child’s mind off of the situation and onto something more upbeat. I believe it is a great responsibility of the therapist to stay abreast of the developing world of medicine and actively engage in a patient-focused practice.
