When I started writing this, I had no clue what it would be about. I was told “It has to be perfect.” “It has to explain you without you explaining yourself.” “You have to give it meaning without being asked for anything.” “If it isn’t good enough, admission officers won't give your application a second glance.” So, I put off writing it, pondering it over and over in my mind. I’m so glad I put it off, because until recently, I didn’t know what it was keeping me in Hawai’i. My mom lives in Oregon now, and I had the option to move with her because she still has custody. Something kept me here, though, and I wasn’t sure what. Through reminiscing and building more memories, I realized what it was. It was how much I love being Hawaiian. The food,
While growing up, I was always told that once you have hit rock bottom, you have nowhere else to go but up. That advice always seemed to come from relatives that had just had a life changing events happen and were just trying to be optimistic. I never realized how true it was until I became homeless in Hawaii.
American tourism to Hawaii has increased by 14.2 percent in just two years. This dramatic increase in tourism seems to be a beneficial boost for Hawaii's economy; however, the increasing rate of tourism is harming the native people of Hawaii. While the Hawaiian economy is experiencing one of its most fruitful years, the native Hawaiian people are suffering from job loss, poverty, depression, and an overall "cultural destruction" (Trask 260). Haunani-Kay Trask uses rhetoric to discuss these harmful effects in her essay "Tourist, Stay Home" in order to persuade her readers into believing that tourism can actually be a bad thing for an economy. On the other hand, in his article "Surf's Up for the Economy in Hawaii," Jim
Last summer, I had the opportunity to visit 3 of the 7 islands that make up Hawaii. The first of the islands Oahu, is home to Honolulu, the capital and biggest city located in the islands. Each island has its own identity, mythology of its respective climate, and geographic attractions. Oahu is known for its city landscape and most of its attractions are shopping outlets, restaurants and bars. The Pearl Harbor Memorial is also located on Oahu, which features the sunken ship, the USS Arizona, among others and a battleship that you can board. Another must do on Oahu is hiking up Diamond Head, a dormant volcano and former fort at overlooks Honolulu.
Now I will tell you about some exciting scenic of Honolulu. Diamond Head, this ancient volcano located at Waikiki, is one of the best scenic of Honolulu city, and its simply breathtaking scene for all the tourists. The next one is Nu'uana Pali Lookout is set between two incredible high cliffs, providing a panoramic view not only over Honolulu, but over the whole of this Island. There is so many scenic in Honolulu for tourist to visit
When I think about the culture I come from, I immediately think about my Japanese and Filipino lineage. I also think about Hawaii, and how growing up there has shaped me today. This are only parts of the equation to my cultural identity. No matter what nationality or country you grow up in, each person is exposed to different ideals that mix in with their background culture. I would like to look at my cultural identity by looking at some traditions in Hawaii, the organizations I’ve been a part of, and my own unique personal identity. Each of these has played a role in shaping my own cultural identity.
Last week I arrived at Hawaii or the Sandwich Islands and when I got there, all the native Hawaiians had poorly choice of clothes since it showed a lot of their skin. Since we were sailing for over 4 months, they were incredibly kind and nice to share how they live with some of my friends and me. My hair has grown down to my rib cage since the last time, I saw you my hair was only down to my shoulders. I have lost 21 pounds by just carrying heavy boxes and a printer and everything else off of the ship and eating scarcely. My bones were aching yesterday so, I asked the Hawaiians if they have any medicine. Unfortunately they didn’t, but the good thing was that the nurse we brought from the ship was in the next house and she had some. My friends
Have you ever met a new special friend? I have back in 2011,I was as tiny as a mouse.I was at least 3,4,or 5 years old when I met her.
Robert sneered, “We’re here to work, not to pray.” Only two weeks passed since I joined Kupu to volunteer for seven-weeks. My team started our first day working in the forest. Although I joined this program to save Hawaii's environment, I found myself lodged between cultures when at 4 a.m. Kama woke us to chant.
According to hawaiinewsnow.com it is a fact that on average, there was about 220,000 tourists a day in Hawaii. Visitor spending grew 4.2 percent in 2016, to $15.6 billion. That fact shows that Hawaii is a highly visited state. From their sandy shores to their wildlife, students have many opportunities to have new experiences. A beneficial field trip would be to Hawaii and visit the Pearl Harbor Memorial, Diamond Head, and Sandy Beach.
Growing up somewhere as beautiful as Maui has taught me the important values that define who I am today. One place specifically enlightened me of the value that I strive to fulfill each day, which is to live in the moment and appreciate where I am . Prior to this experience I lived in fear of the unknown future that was out of my control.
If you are a fan of sun, the beach or warm weather, Hawaii is probably on your bucket list. If so, here are some exciting facts that may make you get there sooner.
While the Hawaiian Islands are a fun and beautiful place to both visit and live, the moving experts at M. Dyer & Sons, Inc. Moving Company would just like to impart a word of warning.
At 6:00 in the morning on July first I was packed and ready to go to Hawaii. I was so excited I almost blew up. I was up and ready to get on the plane at 9:00am. We ended up getting to the airport at 7:30 and I was so ready to just be in Hawaii. We ended up getting breakfast there and just waiting to board. We got on the plane and I didn’t know how long the flight was so I asked my mom she said “ the flight is 5 hours.” I was so sad I wanted to be in Hawaii. I asked my mom if we could get a movie and she said sure so I got Moana. I fell asleep on accident 4 hours I woke up and like everyone was asleep. So I started my movie ate some snacks and went back to bed I woke up right as we were landing. It was so pretty I saw beautiful flowers smelled a new scent of ocean breeze and flowers. I was so excited I jumped off the plane and ran into airport. As soon as we got our stuff we saw my grandparents. We ran to them and they took us home. We immediately went to the beach and swam. A week later my mom had to leave to come back to Washington.
Visiting Hawaii is a great thing in itself, but since my Dad lives there that makes things even better. I got a more personal and less touristy touch to getting familiar and enjoying Maui. This is my second time going to the incomparable island of Maui. While the first time was magnificent, this time was a different. This trip taught me details I didn’t learn, see, and do last time.
