Personal Narrative: High School Drill Team

Throughout my high school, I have been able to not only be led but also being a leader myself. I have been a part of high schools drill team for three years and of course every year I have had a group of leaders that help us throughout the year with our personal goals and struggles. This was my one of my first experiences with having a leader and it truly became what inspired me to become a leader myself. I joined the Latino Student Union my junior year and became the secretary/representative officer my senior year. Within these involvements, I have learned what it takes to be the best leader you can be and which ones I value the most. The first characteristic I value the most is authenticity, I genuinely value this trait because the leaders in my drill team were able to pinpoint our unique skill set that lied in every team member. This was something that I personally wanted to exhibit in the Latino Student Union club being that I was one of the first officers and I had a tremendous amount of passion for the club. All of the officers were seniors, therefore we all had the goal to leave a legacy. We were determined to make the most of our last year as officers. We always made sure to talk about topics that possibly other Latino students didn't feel comfortable discussing outside of the club. We conversed about politics, hardships that Hispanic countries were facing, and stereotypes. Throughout this, club members felt as if they were able to express their emotions towards certain subjects. This made all of the officers feel like we were making a change for these people and allowing them to express themselves in a safe environment.
