I watched as the first orange hued rays of the sunrise wash over the dark and mysterious sky. The small glow travels across the wild blue yonder and starts to brighten up the deepest parts of the skyline and the town. Under the radiating sky there was no place of hiding, the light would finally hit you. This bright light brought the new day in, but it also brought dread to some.
Today was the day that mother always warned of us, the day of taking that came every five years. From the window we could hear the small parties of soldiers marching closer and closer towards the town. I saw the vizier and the leader stand in front of the soldiers directing the the soldiers in a clean cut formation. As they got closer they yelled for fathers to

But miraculously, the vizier to us to come to a complete halt but with my lack of sense direction, my foot caught on to a small rock on the ground. I thought I could save myself from falling fully, but against my better judgment I was half way to the floor and half of my body made contact with the person in front of me and the ground. My hands and knees grazed along the floor and pieces of skin tore from them and a spark of a horrible sting struck through my hands and knees. As if things could not get worst, Ahmet screamed for a soldier to grab me and the boy I fell upon. As the soldier grabbed me, I finally inspected my hands and realized that they were bleeding and covered with things from the ground. As we were both dragged and placed in front of Ahmet, he yelled what is WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS AND WHAT ARE YOUR NAMES? I quietly said Milos Petrov, do to the amount of pain I was in, but to my right I heard the boy say Natanail Angelovski. Ahmet replied with don’t you boys let this happen again and hurry up and get back into line. Ahmet stood in front us and said that for the next two weeks we will be staying in villages only for one night, and that if we spoke to the villagers about are pain or of us wishing to go back home that we would be severely punished. As Ahmet told us to continue to march, I could see in the distance one of the villages we would stay in and as if they …show more content…
However, as we got closer to a city we saw an orange hued skyline studded with domes and minarets. With a large concrete wall surrounding the city, I saw boats everywhere seeming as if they were leaving and entering into this magnificent city. As we got closer the Vizier said welcome us to Istanbul. The vizier then went around checking that who arrived in Istanbul matched the number of boys they started with and also used the boy’s description as away of tallying. This was a way to keep track off the ones that became ill on the journey or who did not arrive. With this new tally, Ahmet made a new inscription on a new scribe with the boys who made it. Ahmet then told us for the three days we will be able to rest, we stayed in Ahmet’s house for the next three days. Most of us slept because of the long journey or were worried about what would happen to us in the long run. On the third day we were abruptly woken up at sunrise and told to get into formation and we started marching, we were then once again split into groups of five and the soldiers pushed us into a room. As we walked into the room the soldiers told us to repeat after them, I testify “La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad rasoolu Allah.” As all us repeated after the soldier we had no idea what we said or what position we put are self’s in. One of the soldiers later explained the following, that since we have said the Shahada (Testimony
Vibrant hues of orange and yellow were smeared together and they played with violent shades of red. The rising sun rested in a bed of golden rose, cotton clouds. Its rays of light spilling over the hills like pale orange paint. At least, that's what I imagined this sunrise would look like in a world without skyscrapers and other assorted buildings suffocating the horizon, sucking the life out of the beauty that nature gives us, and replacing it with smoke, oil, and the stench of our ever growing need to expand. Our need, humanity's need to leave no blade of grass behind, to cover every inch of the earth with pollution and man made roads and structures, is what is destroying the beauty that nature provides.
I was a passenger in the backseat of our family vehicle. The small bumps in the pavement lulled me to a place of perfect repose. As we looked outside our windows we could see the sky painting a magnificent show for us. The sun was going down, but the heavens were brighter and more astounding than I had ever seen them before. It was as if someone had set the clouds alight with raging wildfires and splashes of pink and purple scattered about. I never wanted it to end, but the sky had other plans. The masterpiece before us began to recede into darkness as the nighttime engulfed the sun and put daytime to
Young Kayden woke up to the screams of the small town of Dwar. It was barely only seven o’clock in the morning, and it was already time. As the town boarded up their homes, Young Kayden didn’t know what was going on, for he had no knowledge of what was happening. Since he was the Head Official’s
Suddenly another person was on the ladder with me. I pulled my sword out of its sheath and started to fight the man on the ladder with me. I fought him as best I could with the position I was in. I feared that I would either die or fall off the ladder and get hurt. I was here to help my fellow Ottoman’s expand our empire. If we won the battle I will accomplish one of my biggest goals, helping our empire expand. I also think I will finally accomplish my goal of getting a wife if we win the battle. I continued to fight the man on the ladder slowly growing more and more tired. I thought about what would happen next week if we won the battle, we will probably start burying the dead. Suddenly I was caught off guard by the man I was fighting and was knocked off the ladder and landed on the ground hard. I knew it was coming, I knew I was going to
After abandoning the camp we stumbled across the country side and found a house. As we sit by the wall, we think about our fellow soldiers now in heaven. I look up to the sky to see shepherds delight or more like the resemblance of the blood of the abandoned. Why everyone was quiet, I don’t know. There probably just tired from the great determination. Many of us seeking an end but will be disappointed and become depressed. Trepidation of death has occurred in several of us.
but this time, they finished at dawn, due to the higher caution. It was still dark and there was not any daylight, when they were returning somebody suddenly heard a clack from the minefield. He alarmed the others. Fear had left everyone breathless. There was a strange reticence. Everyone was expecting a horrible thing. The longer the silent moments of waiting, the bigger the people's panic and fear. They were sticking to the rocks and sandbags more and more, like they were rooting into the soil. The clack repeated in the field. The troops got on standby in prone position. The critical circumstance had taken our breath away. An urgent call was made to the division headquarters which was on a high alert. The mortars and artillery groups were
I write for this reason exactly, to disobey the Leader, it is a way to remember my parents. There are portraits everywhere of the Leader we must bow to each one that we pass to show respect. If a guard sees us not bowing then we are taken to the Leader. There are guards everywhere they wear the colour orange, it is their Image. Unlike anyone else the Guards wear a purple sash on their uniforms. Purple is the Leader’s Image; the leader wears this colour with a symbol of The Tool on it. The Tool represents our struggle to escape The Horror. It is what we use to farm and gather food. All I know of the Horror was that it happened on the surface and forced our people to build this city underground so that we could survive. Every one must wear a smaller symbol of The Tool as a reminder of our people’s struggle. There are 5 Images, which our people belong to, as I wrote before I am part of the Brown Image and we collect food. There is also the Blue Image they melt ice for our water, there is the White Image these are the carers, they help sick people and give us shelter, there is the Red Image, these people are inventors and finally the Black Image who are builders and fixers. All of these Images combine to serve the Guards, who are said to serve the Leader. I have never before seen the Leader, the Guards tell us stories and remind us to obey the rules but the portraits seem to be as close as we get to seeing the Leader in person. I don’t even
Everything was bad until they came. Then everything turned even worse. They wore of red and black, soldier color. Their horses galloping without rest, soldier horses. These bad boys would kick you until you stop breathing. “Well this is new,” I said to myself. “Citizens!” one shouted, “Your presence is requested at the royal palace of the king.” The villagers started whispering all the sudden. Last time soldiers came, nine people went missing including 3 children. I deeply didn’t care about this because I spent 23 hours a day working in the mines. I’m a miner hence the name Miner. “Everyone of the village must come or face death,” another soldier said. This actually change my point of view, I had never left the village, or
Hello. I am very excited for English this year. I love reading because it is an interesting way to see how other people deal with situations and I love entering the character's world and seeing how others live. I also like speaking in front of audiences and creating some kind of project after a unit. In my free time, I enjoy hiking with my friends, camping with my family, and I love swimming. I didn’t have a very interesting summer. For the first half of the summer I had a broken fibula and for the second half of the summer, I had a shattered heel. In my free time I read lots of books; Firefly Lane, The Forgotten Garden, The Selection series, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Etc. I also went to all of my teammates swim competitions to cheer them
It all began like any other day, the children were laughing, the farmers farming and the Watchmen guarding. Things were peaceful in the town of Spriggania although they were different. In order for the town to have peace they had to agree to give up all of their sanity or all of their memory. Upon choice they
The summer after my sophomore year was hell. Choices I had made led me into serious trouble with my parents, who made sure that I didn’t have a chance to make more mistakes like that again. Only being let out of the house to work on the farm for my grandpa, I had to find different forms of entertainment. This was when I got back into reading. I have always loved reading, but never had time to, or was too busy with other things to sit down and actually enjoy a good book. I read almost half of the young adult section in the Blackfoot library that summer. About half way through July I found the best book I had ever read. It was almost a complete map of my life, and spoke the words in my head that I couldn’t understand. This was written by Ned Vizzini and is called It’s Kind of a Funny Story.
I remember one incredibly funny day from last year. It was the day I fell through the glass display case at school. Boy, I tell you that sucked so bad. I know for a fact I’ll never live it down. I’m known for being pretty accident prone so it was no surprise to people when they found out I was the one who had left the blood stain in the hallway.

It was so hot outside i had to stop and take a break. I sat on a bench faraway from other people so i can cool down. Where i sat was a lot of shade so I started cooling down fast then suddenly I felt a cold breeze shiver down my spine and as I turned around i see a tall skinny man behind me. He was sort of hunched over and had a mischievous smile on his face he stepped closer to me and said, “My you have very beautiful eyes and nice tan skin! I’m sure the color green would look so beautiful on you.” I gave him an awkward smile and nervously said ‘T-Thank you..” “Here take this necklace I’m sure you’ll take very good care of it.” he said with a devious smile on his face. The necklace reminded me on an ancient Egyptian actifact, it had gold with emerald jewels on it and in the middle has a big golden beetle with small rubies on it. Amazed I said, “oh no sir i can’t take that, it must of costed you a fortune.” he came closer making me fear for my own life and he firmly said, “Take it..I insist” i just nodded my head i fear and watched him leave. The necklace is very beautiful, but why would give it to a random stranger? I continued shopping trying to forget what just happened. I got many compliments on my new necklace and many people tried to buy
It was December 1917 when Russia stopped fighting in this “Great War”. It was great it was finally over “The War to End all Wars”. The truth is this was far from great, it was the beginning to a new life. I’m just an ordinary 14 year old named Nikolai Kolaveri living in Penza, a town in Russia, where I take care of my family.
The sunset was not spectacular that day. The vivid ruby and tangerine streaks that so often caressed the blue brow of the sky were sleeping, hidden behind the heavy mists. There are some days when the sunlight seems to dance, to weave and frolic with tongues of fire between the blades of grass. Not on that day. That evening, the yellow light was sickly. It diffused softly through the gray curtains with a shrouded light that just failed to illuminate. High up in the treetops, the leaves swayed, but on the ground, the grass was silent, limp and unmoving. The sun set and the earth waited.
