Many historians disagree on which historical event was key in shaping the Australian identity. Two common answers are Federation, and the fall-out of World War One. Both events have had significant impact on the evolving identity of the Australian people. World War I was a military conflict that lasted for the four years between July 1914 and November 1918. World War One was a force of change due to the nature of Australia's involvement at home and in politics. Prime Minister Billy Hughes came to power just six months after the start of the war. This meant that as a politician, he held a significant sway with the Australian public. Both Hughes and the media influences at the time are key aspects of the Australian identity during the war, and
Australia is still a lucky country because it has the beautiful landscape. Australia has many beautiful environments such as the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru, the Blue Mountains and beautiful beaches. In Dorothea Mackellar’s poem (My Country), she expressed how much she loves the natural landscape. Te imagery of ‘the sapphire-misted mountains’ highlights Mackellar’s appreciation of the mountainous areas of Australia. The line ‘I love a sunburnt country’ highlights the diversity of the landscape in Australia. Therefore, Australia is still a lucky country because of the natural landscape, which is highlighted in Dorothea Mackellar’s poem.

Media sources in current culture are construed as important as they communicate the dominant ideology promoted by the bourgeois which the lower-class public should adhere to as the correct social norm (Kress, 1988). The medium which these ideologies are shown in are important, as different medium are used by different cultures. This essay will focus on comparing print with online media through analysing the Guardian and the Australian from August 31st. This will be done by looking at the types of news shown in each, the constraints and advantages of each medium, advertising, the concept of ownership, and the way the media convinces the public of their ideologies through hegemony.

The ANZAC Legend ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as ANZACS, and the pride they soon took in that name endures to this day. The ANZAC legend began with the landing at Gallipoli on April 25 1915, signaling the start of the disastrous Dardanelles campaign on the Turk Peninsula. This campaign saw thousands of ANZAC fatalities before its conclusion in January 1916.
The process of expansion is an important part of any empire and with it comes many byproducts. One such byproduct is. how to govern over the diverse people, who have just been conquered? Two such Empires that had to deal with such a question were the Ottoman and Spanish Empires. The Ottoman Empire, replaced the Byzantine Empire as the major power in the middle east. As in expanded it had to deal with the diverse populations from europe, to asia, to northern africa. The Spanish Empire, rooted in the marriage between Ferdinand and Isabella, first conquered most of the iberian peninsula before expanding to the new world, where it had to deal with people, who came from a very different culture. The Ottoman Empire was able to function more successfully when dealing with many different populations due to their inherent way of supervising conquered governments instead of assimilating them and therefore causing less unrest
There are many diverse interpretations of the words “Australian Identity”. The national anthem, as evidenced in Stand Up, is a primarily white interpretation of Australia and the Australian identity, with many of the lines ignoring the Indigenous people of Australia (Perkins et al, 2012). Another form of the “Australian Identity” was one presented by Prime Minister Paul Keating in his Redfern Address in 1992. He proclaimed that “Australia is a first-rate social democracy…truly the land of the fair go and the better chance”. This idea presented represents an egalitarian society, where every single human has an equal opportunity at life. Yet another, shown in the songs Paul Kelly sang, but especially in “this land is mine” is the difference between the identity of Indigenous Australians and non-Indigenous Australians (Kelly et al, 2001). Each of these texts addressed a major issue. Stand Up compared the relative value of tradition and the right to freedom of expression. Keating’s speech expressed the need for justice and recognition of both the stolen generation and the injustices done to the Indigenous people as a whole. Kelly’s songs represent the importance of the land to Indigenous people and why the “returning of the land” is so important. Although they each mentioned a major issue, the texts all gave solutions to these issues, from reiterating the importance of the basic human right of freedom of speech in Stand Up, to explaining the role and qualities of the Aboriginal
