Through my experience with the healthcare field, I have seen that low socioeconomic status, culture, and access are the major contributors to the health disparities today. Whether it is not being able to afford health insurance/medical costs, a culture that’s attitude and beliefs does not put much value on preventative care, or simply not having appropriate transportation to the doctor, all these factors work together against the patient. Medical professions can best tackle these issues by first knowing and understanding the needs of the population in which they practice. Theoretically, if one is aware of specific needs then those needs can be better addressed, whether they are financial or cultural needs. Also, medical professionals can work
As individuals and as a group, we have worked hard, we toiled, we endured, and we have come out better, with more passion and more confidence than when we began. We have survived all the different rotations, shifts, and calls, the sleepless nights and the chaos and adrenaline of the emergency room duty and the rigorous training examinations. I believe we are all proud to have made it to this day. In all sincerity, today represents a landmark achievement for each of us and our families. It is to our loved ones and all those who encouraged us through this long journey from preschool through residency that we owe our deepest thanks. The encouragement from family, friends, colleagues, faculty, staff and strangers have played a vital role in our success.
As I begin my fifth year of working as a nurse practitioner in a leading children’s hospital, I am certain the pediatric acute care setting is where I will continue my career of service to children and their families. Although I hold a masters degree in nursing and have been a primary care certified pediatric nurse practitioner for many years, I wish to expand my knowledge of pediatric nursing to encompass the unique and challenging aspects of pediatric acute care.

I did not know much about the health care field then but in that moment, I felt as if the health care system failed since the day he was born. This experience made me become eager to be a part of making a difference in the health care world. The lack of managed care caused the life of my nephew, and for this my passion for Science and the need of helping others only manifested because of my experience. My aspirations were to become a Registered Nurse and specialize in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In my early college years, I also became a part of the UCLA team through an internship program. UCLA Care Extenders allowed me to gain valuable knowledge. As an intern, I did clinical rotations and was able to discover what takes place behind closed doors. However, what lead me into
I always knew I want to work with pediatric population. During my clinical rotations, I always requested to work with pediatric patients if available. Unfortunately, my nursing instructor who understood this passion and extracurricular activities passed away shortly before graduation. However, that adds to motivation to help continue to help children and their communities. In the first month of clinical rotation at Seattle Children’s, there was a patient’s family who was getting frustrated. After
Cook Children’s has achieved accreditation by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education. This is important to me as it shows the quality and integrity of the residency program and I am assured that I will receive the best training and education available to me. I enjoy learning and I believe that a residency at Cook Children’s will allow me to stay up to date with nursing skills, policies, procedures, and give me an opportunity to further my education through my experiences. In the residency program, I will complete over 1,800 hours of individual clinical experience with a nurse preceptor. The amount of individual clinical hours ensures that I will be able to start my career with confidence that will help me further as a new graduate nurse. With the high achievements that Cook Children’s has obtained, I believe that I will have an outstanding platform to begin my nursing career that will aid me in becoming a nurse with the ability to continue to learn and grow in the profession. Upon completion of this residency I expect to have a solid foundation of pediatric nursing that I can build on. Cook Children’s has several values which include caring, safety, integrity, collaboration, innovation, and giving. I will demonstrate caring by listening to my patients and their families. I will be an advocate for patients and treat them holistically. I will try to minimize fears by explaining procedures to patients, keeping them updated on their treatment, and answering any
My first goal during the child life internship is to successfully gain a working knowledge of the philosophy and principles of patient-and family-centered care. Although I have some valuable experiences working with children and families, I believe that the setting, environment, and resources at Advocate Children’s Hospital will help me to further develop skills and knowledge in working with families in times of crisis and high stress. I want to gain a solid understanding of family dynamics, stress reduction and developmental, educational, and therapeutic play techniques. My second goal is to evaluate my own work under the guidance of experienced professionals, and be measured by professional standards. As a graduate student in child life, I have set forth to gain knowledge of developmental and educational theories, role-play various preparations with classmates, and volunteer for child life events; thus the next step is to gain clinical preparation and put what I have learned in class to practice. Hence, I am eager to invest in opportunities to build on coursework and apply theory under the guidance of experienced individuals to acquire skills in the profession. My third goal, but not my last goal, is to strengthen my ability to interact and communicate with other members of the health care team to integrate child life into the care plan. Child life is not only a service, but a team commitment to excellent care, therefore, it is important
As a medical assistant student I participated in a month long internship at North Country Family Health Center in Watertown New York. I was interning at the Health Center where I was active with many Medical Assistants and LPN’S.
A unique experience that I had at Norton Women’s and Children’s Hospital was that we also covered labor and delivery and the mother-baby unit. Most of our programming and interventions on these units involved bereavement and grief support, sibling education/support, and memory/legacy making. From my coursework and volunteer experiences at the University of Charleston, South Carolina, I had a solid foundational background with grief and bereavement through our child life courses, our death and dying course, our experiences with Shannon’s Hope, and our experiences with Rainbows. A family is forever changed when there is a loss of a family member, specifically a child (Pearson, 2005). A parents reaction to the death of a child greatly differs
American Academy of Pediatrics is an organization with the professional membership of about 64,000 primary care pediatricians, pediatric surgical specialists, and pediatric medical sub-specialists. These individuals are dedicated to the safety, health, and well-being of infants, adolescents, and young adults. The goal of this organization is to attain optimal physical, social, and mental health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. The AAP also advocates for access to healthcare for all children, adolescents, and young adults. A number of long-term research programs are done by the AAP to enhance the delivery of health care to children. In the Research in Office Settings program studies are conducted using a network of 1,800 pediatricians who work in office-based practices. This program is also one of the longest running programs in the United States (About AAP, 2016).
In the process of me completing an internship at the Department of Human Services, (DHS) in the department of children and families, I was asked to supervise a home visit with the non-custodial parent which in this particular case (father). So in this case the visit always takes place at the local park within the community. The custodial parent (mother) drove by the park and seen that the child’s father brought along his present girlfriend’s daughter to accommodate him with his visit with his son. The mother got upset because the father brought along his girlfriend’s
This summer has by far been the most meaningful due to my internship at the Lloyd Moss Free Clinic. I had a wonderful opportunity to use my summer before college to explore healthcare professions and learn how a free clinic functions. Throughout my experience, I was exposed to many different professions within a clinic. My daily task consists of a wide variety of activities. I would begin by sorting and filing patient document, gathering charts for upcoming appointments, and helping the clinical operations director with projects regarding referrals. Then, I would continue my day at the call center. While assisting at the call center, I was able to learn what exactly each department handles at the clinic and I was exposed to a variety of terms
My job at Mercy Health Saint Mary Campus was ironic. Most of the experiences that I acquired were different from what I have learned from FSU. At the college, I learned the basic computer hardware, software, and operating system. I took a class on how to repair computer by taking it apart and troubleshooting it with software. The other classes were networking, security, and windows server. I was surprised that desktop support technician at Mercy Health has a different process of how to do their jobs. I don't have all the permission to do everything myself. Most of the jobs were assigned to a specific team. The WAN team who is responsible for the network equipment such as the routers and switches. The LAN team job is to configure the servers.
As my internship at Tufts Floating Hospital came to an end this week, I reflected on my internship as a whole. Although there were days that I did not look forward to going to the hospital, I always tried to go in with a smile, which clearly reflected in my supervisor’s evaluation. My entire internship was not exactly what I expected. I went in thinking that there would be a lot of busy work, but I did not think about the size of the hospital. Tufts Medical Center is smaller than Children’s Hospital, which is also located in Boston. This means that many more children end up at Children’s Hospital rather than Tufts Floating Hospital, thus creating slower working days. This internship allowed me to learn therapeutic skills for children, which
