Personal Narrative: Leave A Baby In A Car

Usually as a sophomore in high school we experience one of the most exciting things, driving. The minute one turns fifteen and a half we race to the DMV, take the test, and get our temporary licence. This is where we spend the next half a year in a car with our parents, practicing and being told everything to do and not to do.

The most tragic incident that can happen to a parent would be their own child’s death. Furthermore, it would be even worse if they are the one who caused their baby to die. Gene Weingarten, the author of the article “Fatal Distraction: Forgetting a Child in the Backseat of a Car Is a Horrifying Mistake. Is It a Crime?” introduces the readers to the heartbreaking cases of parents who caused their child to die by forgetting them in a car. Weingarten states that forgetting a child in a car is happening frequently in the United States and states that this could happen to anyone although no one thinks it could. Parents lead busy lives. With a thousand errands to be taken care of, it can be tempting to leave a child in the car while ducking into the store or dropping off some dry cleaning. It can even be easy to completely forget that a child is in the car at all.

While most parents have enough common sense to know not leave their infants and very young children alone in a car, as children get older, there may be circumstances where it does not seem unreasonable to do so. It’s August 13, 1975. Mom left the house 2 days ago, and she came back today with a new baby. He doesn’t look like a newborn, he has none of my parents features, and well he looks kind of weird. But, I guess I have really never seen a newborn and I mean the kids at school call me weird so maybe we are exactly the same. Mom and Dad left the house a few minutes after they got home and I didn’t see them for another 5 days. All I heard from them was, “ There is food in the fridge. Imagine the daily commute; it all starts out as a very busy morning, rushing to work. Leaving the car, locking the doors behind forgetting a sleeping child unnoticed in the backseat. It happens more often than people believe, most parents cannot imagine accidentally leaving their child in the car but it happens every year. Every summer during a heat wave there is a new news report being broadcasted about how a parent left a child in a hot car alone. However, with the new current technological safety advancements in the automotive industry, there has to be a solution to keep parents from forgetting a child is in their car.

I, on the other hand, viewed my driver’s license as the next step in becoming an adult. After all, becoming a licensed driver entails much more than getting to avoid daily bus rides to school.
