In ten years I see myself changing urban communities throughout the world addressing the issues of crowding, environmental injustices, and carbon sequestration projects through the lens of social justice. I would like to reduce class division through collaborative initiatives between existing businesses and the development of new businesses filling in the lack of resources within those communities. I would like to contribute to revitalization efforts that reimagine the use of space in urban areas to address concerns of community while intersecting the use of spaces with outdoor art gallergies that feature local artists and crafters in the region. Such projects for example would be a transformation of Springfield into a Seussville community
Equivalently, the displacement of artists that originally occupied Liberty Village, through evictions and rising property costs, represents the rejection of residents and businesses who don’t conform within Liberty Village BIA’s vision of the community; while Liberty Village’s BIA favor the accumulation of capital through consumption of cultural industries, artists who aid in making areas trendy and enhance public space through beautification projects are excluded from neighborhood objectives because they are contrary to BIA’s business recruitment goals of acquring economically viable industries that will in turn strengthen the area’s branding and encourage more industry to the area (Cantugal et al 2009; Rankin & Delaney
On 06/19/17, a t12:00pm, I Deputy Warden N. Christian was dispatched to 3251 Miriam Drive South on an injury-possible dangerous or vicious dog. I arrived at the location and was advised by The Columbus Division of Police (CPD) that the victim is being transported to Mount Carmel West Hospital (793 W State St) for her injuries and dog owner resides at the above location. I exited my vehicle and approached the dog owner. I spoke to dog owner Alex Kriglowitz and his wife. I asked Mr. Kriglowitz what transpired. He explained he was mowing his lawn and opened the side fence to mow the side yard. His dog was in the backyard. Mr. Kriglowitz completed mowing and forgot to close the gate. Mr. Kriglowtiz went inside the house and the next thing
I witnessed my cousins boyfriend corpse lying on my neighbors lawn. It was a humid summer night around 3:30 when I peeked through my window and saw my devastated cousin sobbing uncontrollably on my decaying porch. Being from East chicago, Indiana has transformed me into the person I am today.
It's been over five years since I have been home, to the north side of Chicago, I cannot believe it has changed so much in such a short time. The streets are filled with new buildings, new businesses, and so much snow. I don't remember the winters being this cold. Leaving Atlanta to go see my family in Chicago is a tough decision but I had to see my grandmother who is turning ninety years old this weekend and my family is throwing her a huge birthday party in Chinatown because my grand loves that culture and the food. I was supposed to meet the family right after I landed at O'Hare Airport. However, I needed to shower and change so I decided to check into the Peninsula Hotel, which I have always wanted to stay in, it is such a beautiful
The city of Chicago has been displayed as a dangerous city in which all residents are affiliated with drugs, gangs, and misconduct of firearms. Whether someone fits into this stereotype or not, is normally based on their surroundings and their interactions with others. Growing up in Gage Park, named one of the worst neighborhoods, falling into this stereotype and becoming affiliated with drugs, guns, and gangs, would not be too hard for someone to do. However, I have lived in Gage Park my whole life and have not fallen into the status quo. I have had family members and friends fall into this realm of unpleasantness and watching them become another wrong kind of statistic is upsetting. I have been faced with the decision of continuing to have
Although I was born in San Antonio, my childhood life wasn’t spent in the Alamo City. Up in north Texas, there is a miniature city consisting of three thousand people named Nocona. The town was my childhood life until my mother fell into a deep depression. As a result, my mother was unable to hold a job or take care of my sisters and I. This resulted in my mother giving us up to my father in San Antonio. When arriving in San Antonio, my mother would tell me that she was going to come back for us. It has been seven years and I have not lived with my mother since.
New York is a state where there are big lights and lots of people and busy streets. I live in Brooklyn, New York and I was born here and I have lived here all my life. Personally, where I live I can walk to go get groceries that I need and everything is in walking distance. I take the public subway or the bus to get to school and there are many public schools here in Brooklyn, New York. There are delis and corner stores almost around every block. Here in Brooklyn, it is very noisy and busy. I am so used to the noise that I can sleep soundly even with all the noise that surrounds my house. Personally, I think that if I were not born here or was not a New Yorker, I would plan to move here when I get older.
Being from a town where there are no skyscrapers and a growing community, I had never experienced the real feeling of being in an actual crowded city. This city is like none I’ve ever been in, I had been in Miami, Atlanta, and Charlotte but those cities were nothing like the city I was about to visit. In October of 2016 my older brother ran into a medical problem causing us to have to visit a doctor that was located hundreds of miles away. From then on we had to travel to Teaneck, NJ, but minutes away from that town was the largest city in the United States which was New York City. I had seen movies, television shows, and news about New York, but I really did not believe there could be a place so full of life, so I was finally getting the chance
I have written many essays since I was in middle school yet most of my writing was not that important besides for a grade. Yet there is one piece of writing I wrote that change my life and felt that it had an important impact to The City of Chicago. My teacher during that time wanted the class to enter in a citywide competition, which is called “Do The Write Thing”. It is a way for students to voice their opinions on how to stop the violence in Chicago. I wanted to help reduce the violence in Chicago since many youths are being killed in the streets every single day. In my paper, I mainly focused on three body paragraphs. The first one was why the violence in the city was increasing. The second one was some type of violence that I have witness in my own personal life. The final paragraph
hen I was 5 years old I moved from a small house in the West Side of Chicago and moved to a 19-storey building near the North Side of Chicago. When you look at most of the people living there, you don’t feel intimidated or uncomfortable because there are all kinds of people living there of many races and ages. There are good and bad times, but my personality has been affected by both.
The american suburbs are a valuable community for families. Some would debate that they are the best place to raise a family. They can provide a safe, loving, and nourishing place for a child to grow up. On the other hand they provide a sheltered, unexposed, place to grow up. Suburbs are places with community and family and are a very important part of today's society and culture. Although suburbs seems like such a great place to live their are still so many problems within them and a huge lack of true christianity.
The United States and its population pride themselves on setting the trend. Whether it’s the newest clothing line, the best recording artist, or a slightly more important issue, Americans pride themselves in setting the pace on issues for the rest of the world. One issue that has caught our attention is the term “urban greening”. This is defined as taking an urban area and making it more “green” by adding parks, building green roofs on apartments, or closing power plants and other harmful industrial areas to create a more environmentally safe area (Brasuell, 2014). When a low-income area, with many undesirable environmental qualities, starts becoming greener, it causes a negative effect on that population (Regan, n.d). While their housing is now better, the neighborhood becomes increasingly desirable, causing a spike in cost of living and other expenses. Now that the rent has increased, the original tenants cannot afford the new prices, and they are forced to move out. This process is called “environmental gentrification”. This term has sparked numerous debates due to it’s two polar opposite sides. While environmental justice strives to provide equal development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws and quality, these qualities are what makes low-income areas desirable. Imagine a low-income area in New York City, where a neighborhood is next to several production plants and is not near any
A cultural assumption of my neighborhood community is that I will end up as nothing more than someone who works at a Dominican botanica that receives government help. But I do not believe in the categorization of a person by societal assumptions, socio-economic status, or intelligence standards. I challenged their assumptions when I became a volunteer at Women and Infants in Providence. I decided to volunteer to see what it’s like to be in a hospital everyday. During my time at the Hospital I was not getting paid nor was I doing any surgical procedures, however, I was in a medical atmosphere, catching a glimpse of what my future could look like everyday if stayed motivated. It was an exhilarating time because I was able to converse with doctors
I live in Montgomery township in Somerset County, New Jersey. Our township has a population of around 22,254 people. The neighborhood in which I live in is called East Country Estates, and we have a very lively, energetic community. The kids play outside with each other, and there are gatherings on holidays. Most of the families in our neighborhood are of color, so we have lots of “extra” holiday gatherings too. For example, during Chinese New Year, some of the Chinese families organized a gathering, and it was really fun. Our neighborhood is also very supportive of each other, and we really are a group. For example, right now, there was a series of robberies, and the thieves targeted Indian households with excessive decoration. Therefore,
When I was younger I watched the movie Back to the Future. In the movie, there was a car that could take you to the future. I would like to be able to visit the future to to get a heads up and be prepared for what happens. If I could design a futuristic neighborhood, it would have floating four-wheelers, specially designed trucks, and smart houses.
