Malala Yousafzai said, “Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world.” Yousafzai is one of the many people who have used their influence to change lives. Her strength and courage have left me inspired, and I hope that one day I can be as influential in someone’s life. I cannot think of a better way to prepare myself for such a task than college. I am excited to start a new chapter in my life, and I cannot wait to see what Eastern Michigan University has in store for me. I plan on making the most of my college experience at Eastern Michigan University through taking risks, personal growth, and gaining skills and strategies. One way I intend to make the most of my college experience is by taking …show more content…
One skill I hope to hone is analytical thinking. While taking classes at a local community college, I experienced professors who challenged me to think in ways I had not before. I enjoyed being pushed by my professors and learned how to apply the lessons I learned outside of the classroom. I hope to expand on this during my time at Eastern Michigan University and apply it later in my future endeavours. Another skill and strategy is time management. While I have managed my time well during my time in high school, I understand that classes at college will be far more intensive. Time management is a skill that I can use beyond my undergraduate degree when I enter the workforce. A third skill and strategy I hope to develop is determination. Everything I set out to do I give all that I have to give. When I was seven my parents got divorced, and from that moment on, my mother worked to provide for my two sisters and me. I watched as she struggled to do everything on her own, however, she never gave up. Her determination inspired me to persevere through any challenge I encounter. That being said, leaving for college will be the first time I am on my own. I am used to having my family around, which will be difficult because my mom is my support system. However, I know that what college has to offer me will be worth it in the end. If I continue to develope my determination I know that I will be successful. This determination will help me beyond my undergraduate degree, not just in the workforce but in life. The fourth skill I hope to gain is self reliance. I have always been a self motivated and have had no problem holding myself accountable. Something new, will be managing the financial aspects of my education. I will be financing my education on my own. With my mom being a single mother, and my father on disability for a heart condition, I will need to
East Carolina University is and has always been a dream school for many students including myself. I have grown up hearing about the University and it is nothing short of spectacular. Many family members of mine have attended East Carolina, and I have always pictured myself at this school. It would be an honor to be a pirate. Throughout high school I have struggled in Science and Math. I know I could have done better in high school but in life you can always do something better, im eager to push myself more and work harder than ever to succeed as an adult, if given the chance There are many times when I should I have put school in front of my extra curricular activities such as dancing, art, work, tennis, and swimming. However, all of those
I am a high school senior at Fair Park, looking forward to my first year at Jackson State University in the upcoming fall. My cumulative GPA is currently at a 3.6 average and anticipating to increase next semester. I would be considered the best person to receive a scholarship simply because I go the extra mile to assure my success. Although college is an extensive goal, it could be quite expensive. There is no better way to pay for college than by being awarded money for outstanding academic excellence.
HELLO GUYS!!! I have something veryyyyyyyy important to tell you! After all of my stressing about FAFSA ( Free Application Federal Student Aid) , Colleges, and Transportation, I decided to further my education at Rowan University. It took me a long time to make this decision because this wasn’t my first choice! My first choice/ dream school was LIU Brooklyn ( Long Island University) in Brooklyn, New York. I was recently accepted there and planned on attending there, but their out-of-state tuition was extremely high! Their tuition was $33,000 a year and poor black man like myself, cannot afford it. I really loved LIU because it's a great school, beautiful campus, and most of all, it's in New York. I had my whole planned before it even started,
The saying goes “if you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it is yours forever. If it doesn't, then it never was yours at all.” This past fall semester I had to set myself free from the one place I loved to be the most and that was Millersville University. Millersville has been a place that I can whole heartedly call home. From the view of Miller and S’ville at the pond to walking through the SMC to being welcomed by all who see you on campus. I even loved my classes for I had professors who put everything into their teaching and wanted the best for their students. I had to give it all away this past semester and it hurt me so bad.
I served as an officer for our Campus Christian Club at Lone Star College-North Harris for 3 semesters and I remain a member of the group these last two semester. Prior to attending Lone Star College-North Harris I served as a cook, and fund raiser with the Home-school program affiliated with Lindale Assembly of God. I also cooked for our Wednesday night services, or any special event that was held at the church. I served under the instruction of Pastor Randy and Jana Meeks. I also aided in providing perishable and nonperishable goods to the pantry and for emergencies such as opening the church for those who were fleeing Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Prior to this I served Pastor John and Gladys Greiner in Glorious Way Church. I aided in the children’s
In the fall of 2005, I took my first steps onto the campus of Appalachian State University with my sister who was entering as a freshman. One of my most vivid memories from my childhood is walking hand in hand with my then eighteen year old, wide eyed, and prospective sister into the Watauga dorms. Afterwards, as we left down King Street, I distinctly remember gazing back towards the magnificent North Carolina mountains and yearning to stay. Even at the age of five, I knew that one day I would follow in her footsteps and become an Appalachian Mountaineer.
As I sat on the couch getting ready for the first day back at school, I heard the phone in the kitchen ring. I stood up to go answer it and I heard loud footsteps coming down the stairs. My mother was running down the stairs to answer it just in case it was one of her work calls. I noticed that her voice started to crack as if she was going to cry and the smile that she once had on her face had disappeared. The person on the other end of the phone was my Uncle Dylan from California calling to let us know that Aunt Liz had died in a car wreck. We were so devastated but little did we know she left me $12k. A couple days later I received a letter in the mail saying that I had to use it to help pay for my tuition. I am looking to attend the nursing program at Lindenwood, Missouri State, or St. Louis University.
I remember waking up and looking out the window for the first time just to see a gigantic white pole with long, stretching fingers coming out of the top. It was just like a huge fan flowing very slow, as that’s where my 10 year old mind lead me. As we traveled, we finally hit a town that read welcome to Normal, Illinois. I felt so lost as we pulled through a different college town. While Illinois State University's campus isn’t similar to Purdue Universities, I was still having flashbacks of the enjoyment and memories I had made in Lafayette, Indiana. All of this was happening because my dad had just got a job as a football coach at Illinois State.
As a faculty member, I have experience teaching to diverse audiences. During my time at Youngstown State University, I worked within a student population that had a significant minority and low-income population. I provide opportunities for all students within my courses. In my class, I foster an environment where students are respectful yet feel safe to offer diverse opinions that will be of benefit to everyone in the class. Within my courses I often add an assignment to write about a diversity issue within community. I have also brought speakers to my classes from various minority communities.
Although many schools claim to be the best, the University of Michigan truly holds this spot in my eyes. When talking to people about it, they always comment on how cold it is, and they wonder why people would ever want to live there. My answer is simple; I was born in Michigan and love everything about it. From the bitter cold, to the prestigious colleges, I take pride in being born here. When I researched great law schools and found one located in Michigan, my attention was immediately
Where do I even begin? Well, first off…. THANK YOU! You have no idea the impact you have made on not only my life, but so many others. Speaking on behalf of my peers, you truly are a one-of-a-kind and remarkable professor. In my time at Eastern Kentucky University as an undergrad in the History Department, I had my fair share of good, bad and okay professors. You are in none of those categories because you created one for yourself.
Ever since my first day on the Evergreen campus, I began to hear the phrase cura personalis everywhere. I heard it in convocation and welcome speeches and found it written throughout admissions pamphlets and even in course syllabi. As a new first-year student, the phrase was introduced to me with the meaning, “care of the whole person.” During my first year at Loyola, I found that there was an abundance of resources and support systems around the Evergreen campus that were there to help students, like myself, navigate collegiate life while nurturing all facets of themselves, including the physical, mental, and emotional. Having been the recipient of these helpful sources, I decided that I wanted to spend my future years at Loyola helping my
When trying to even begin why the University of Pittsburgh is a good school for me, my mom had me help her make a pot roast. Peeling back the brown crispy layer of an onion, the second layer of white skin appeared. Epiphany struck me; The University of Pittsburgh is like an onion.
I had never had to cling to God as hard as I did this year, despite my Christian upbringing, and that I have been pursuing Him my whole life. In the throes of my deepest and most personal challenges, every prayer that was said was gut wrenching, tear filled, and heartfelt. I was in misery. You know what though? It was beautiful. God was clinging so hard back. He always is, but to be brought to a place where you can feel His embrace so tightly and so clearly is to feel true beauty and joy amid life’s inevitable pain. It is a holy honor. To be completely and totally honest with you, my experience with Campbellsville University was pretty much a girly Christian college cliché. I met the man of my dreams, and I had my “ring by spring.” We are now
What made me the man that I am today? How did I, Melvin Stevens went to childhood to adulthood. I saw an opportunity to go on the East Trip Coast and this trip had made me the way I’m today. I was only 14 years old, traveling on my own. I thought it wasn’t possible to leave my family for this long. Without them to make my decisions, I had no one to rely on. But I learned how to make my own decisions, I didn’t need anyone to rely on. That’s why I had chosen University of Michigan to further my education.
