At Lenoir-Rhyne I have had a plethora of opportunities provided to me in a welcoming environment. From the beginning I was welcomed by all of my professors and fellow classmates, many of whom have helped to create a very positive environment in which I can feel safe in while also seeking real-world enrichment and education. Along with this, I have also had several opportunities presented to me, an important one being asked to assist with running lights for the performance of Othello for the fall semester of 2016. This gave me the chance to be on the theater scene once more, and encouraged me to audition for “Wonder of the World”, for which I will also be running the lights. Doing so has provided me with another small community with which I can be a part of, as well as another field that I would enjoy studying throughout my education at Lenoir-Rhyne. Concerning my own classes, I have also received many benefits and experiences to help better my future. Chiefly, one of these is my Creative Writing class I had last semester with Dr. Owens, who helped me to further refine my craft, not only from a writing standpoint, but from an editing standpoint as well. This enables me to continue my pursuit of my goals in the field of writing, and lays even more important foundations for this path. The Lineberger Fellows program also seems like it will offer me a plethora of opportunities to continue shaping me into a successful individual within society. I believe this is the case because of the more professional aspect of the program, including an introduction/furthering of networking in our respective fields, interview preparations, and the development of more concrete plans of success. These would be immensely helpful tools to help prepare for a more steady future in uncertain times. Additionally, the
Throughout this course, I was able to assess and evaluate my weaknesses and strengths in writing. This class has truly brought out my ability to write, a skill I did not believe I had. I now know what it takes to become a college-level writer. Also, at the beginning of the course I did not particularly enjoy writing. Now, however, I have a greater respect for
And also gave me chance to experience different types of essays. These were some things that helped me master some say reader and writer wrote beyond the university.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe
Over the past four months, I have made great strides as a writer. The area where I have seen the most growth is in my use of the writing process. Prior to my enrollment in this course, I would sit down and write all my papers in one sitting. This class has taught me how to lay out a plan for my papers. I have learned how to effectively brainstorm/research, draft, and revise my writings before I complete them. Also I have learned to not just stop there, instead I am now going back and reflecting on my work after I complete it. This allows me to identify where I prospered and also where my downfalls may have been. With this information, I am able to apply this to future writings of mine; lessons that will stay with me forever.
It was my first writing class as a college freshmen and I did not know what to expect, like whether or not the class would be harder compared to what I took in high school or even if I would enjoy taking class. But as soon as day one turned in into week one, than soon week fifteen I felt more comfortable in the class than what I have probably felt in the beginning. I felt like I could write anything my professor threw at me, because through writing I could express my individuality. It gives me the freedom to express myself through words, and write about things I felt passionate about writing about. I felt as though I writing because I wanted to, and less because I was assigned to do so.
I am from a little town call Laplace. It is about 40 minutes away from New Orleans, Louisiana. I am a single mother of a beautiful daughter that is two years old, and she is very active! We love to go to New Orleans and visit the zoo, the aquarium, the children’s museum, have picnics at the river front, and more! She is also enrolled in dance classes, which leaves me with little time for my own hobbies. When I found out I was pregnant, I had quit my job, move a hour and a half away from home, took a break from school, and became a stay at home mom. While I enjoyed spending all my time with my daughter, I grew tired of staying home all day and just cleaning and cooking. After a year and a half, I decided to go back to work and found a job as
The assignments in this class have shown me that I’m a better writer than I initially thought. The assignments have where I have improved, areas where I still need to improve, and how skills developed here can transfer into other courses.
During these past three weeks I have realized that college is going to be very challenging, it is not what I expected it to be like. This class has helped with my reading and writing experience and has contributed to my understanding of expectations for college and goals for my future. It has helped me with preparing and planning my work ahead of time. Dr. Sariscany has helped me with becoming a better writer and helped me prepare for college level work. She has showed me that college is not going to be easy and we should get used to it and put in all our effort and time into everything we turn in.
Experiences during class has helped me learn new things, and further my education further that what I expected. As well as, prepare myself for the work profession I'm going in. Knowing the simplest things make a difference. I run across several complications throughout my essays. Looking over experienced writers work helps with that
This class has helped my writing in the way that I now try to think of the
I started Antoine’s Learning Center after my youngest daughter graduated from high school. I was fortunate to be able to send my girls to private school as I know that is not the reality for some.
This summer, I spent a month in France with a host family. I’d never been out of the country before, so it was really eye opening. It was such an amazing experience; I learned so much about the language, the culture, and I ate some pretty amazing food. I think my French improved so much when I was there because the language was presented to me in so many different ways. I think I learn best when I have a bunch of different formats to learn material.
For example, throughout the school year i’ve engaged with students I wouldn't normally talk to because of the activities such as peer reviews or group assignments. This class has helped me step outside of my comfort zone not only as a writer, but also as an individual. What was very interesting is in this class I've gotten a chance to see myself grow as a writer and my peers around me. If you've never experienced growth first hand, you will in this class and the feeling is amazing! So there you go, as an incoming freshman take this class serious but don't forget to have fun with it. This writing class will help prepare you for your future so work hard so that one day your signature become an
Fontbonne University was an easy choice for me to attend in the fall of 2015. I knew I wanted to go to a school that offered Fashion Merchandising and had a small community. Once I heard about Fontbonne from my college guidance coordinator at my high school, I knew I needed to go visit. I visited Fontbonne in the spring of 2014 and I fell in love with the campus, the school, and the community. I did look at a few other schools, but none of them had the same impact as FBU. I did not make my decision to attend Fontbonne University until the fall of 2014 when I came back for a second tour. The ambassadors did an excellent job of showcasing the campus and making me feel at home before I was even a student.
It is my belief that through this class and the tools provided, that my growth as a writer has grown through leaps and bounds I would never have assumed possible. It is not so much the skill I refer to, although I would think skill has gone up in some levels as well, but more so the appreciation for the craft of writing itself. Intially, at the start of this class my sole goal was to further my understanding and appreciation of the writer's and books that I so love to read. Through further evaluation within the first week, a few other goals came to mind, of which were, making writing a habit, finishing what I start, stop second guess my writing skills and making effective use of detail and description. Through the use of the many articles, various reading materials, whether poems or short stories, and especially through the workshop, I feel I was able to really push myself to accomplishing these goals. I have thus far learned how important it is not to be skilled at writing per say, but to have the will to write, that poetry is as much about it's sound as it is about it's subject, just how important character development is, how the narration and point of view of a story is essential to the way the story is told, and just how much of a difference peer's critiques can make to your writing.
