During my 15 years of existence I have had numerous experiences that have expanded my enthusiasm and desire for the endless field of knowledge that is STEM, but two experiences stand out the most. Perhaps the earliest experience I’ve had with STEM was wandering the halls of my parent’s veterinary clinic to come upon an open white room full of surgical tools and machines. It was in this well lit room that I was first brought into the STEM world by my mother doing a splenectomy (as she later explained to me). Pushed back at first by my own intimidation, I slowly walked forward in interest. With the explanation from my mother, my interest for information regarding the veterinary field grew. I constantly asked questions about surgery and what it
Have you ever felt the exhilarating feeling of being watched? Like how every move you made felt as if it were being noted and permanently glued to your spectator's mind, the feeling where everyone just wanted to see you fail or make a fool of yourself. In November 2015 my brother and I participated in a fashion show, it took place on on the twelfth and thirteenth at 7:30 each night, Bridgerland Applied Technology College was our host. To be ready for the show we learned the walk, the smile, and anything we needed to know to succeed.
I remember sitting in front of the television at six years old, watching the title sequence to "What's New, Scooby Doo?" and thinking, " How can they enter a room through one door and exit through on the opposite side of the hallway?" Little did I know that would be the epitome of my life within the next 13 years. I soon discovered that life itself is a collection of choices, and making one does not always mean we will stay on one path. Sometimes we make choices to stay and end up as far away as possible from the things we thought we would achieve. However, a mistake that we think will haunt us for the rest of our lives can end up being the best mistake we could have ever wished for. My life has been a series of choices that could have been
My team and I was starting to play the game and we were up to bat first. I was the sixth in line to bat so it felt like forever for me to bat and once you're up there and the ball is coming at you, you just want to run away from the ball. When I hit the ball I ran as fast as i could and i could feel the wind carry me to first base. Then it was our turn to field and once you're out there you can just feel the tasteless dirt in your mouth. When you make a good play it makes you feel all good inside.
As I step out onto the field I smack in the face the aroma of the freshly cut grass. I get the sense of being home after a long trip away. It’s great to be home where I know I have fans that will cheer us on. The grounds crew is out working on the field to get it ready for the game later tonight.
What I would see myself in 10 years would be working as a biologist, the work I’ll be doing would be studying types of plants and doing research on them. The career that I’ll have would be a scientist that studies on types of plants. Choosing this goal is important to me because my sister and dad made me feel inspired and makes me be hard-working for my subjects at school. The satisfaction that provides that if I discover some kind of new plant, I would name it after my name or other names and would do experiments or travel the world. I would say that my school provides subjects like science and talks about them more when you go up a grade.
Throughout the past two years of high school, I have been involved with the Health Careers Academy, where we take health and science-related courses that prepare us to go into the medical field. We also learn a large amount of medical terminology and perform many labs such as those involving forensic science and being a detective at a murder scene using all the clues needed, finding out which antibiotic is necessary to fight a specific bacteria, and even learn about electrophoresis. I chose this academy because I thought it was interesting to learn how the body works. At first, I was not fully dedicated to the sciences, but finding the murderer of a crime scene and other labs made me realize how science can be fun and that I wanted to pursue
In the past couple of years, I have attended presentations by Westinghouse Science Honors Institute and Sam Rhine about bioengineering, stem cells, genetics, and regenerative medicine. These lectures have played such an important role in my decision to major in biomedical engineering at college. This internship would be an amazing opportunity for me to gain even more knowledge about this area of science. The information and experience I would gain at this internship would be an excellent start to my life after high school graduation. Seeing first-hand research on regenerative medicine would give me a taste of what I will be doing in the future as a biomedical engineer. In addition, going into college with the knowledge I would gain at this internship
Heading in to taking the tests, I was expecting for my results to confirm what I was already thinking; which was that I would lean toward the psych or engineering field. And it did, while also showing me new career interests that I’m going to also have to consider. I tried to answer all the questions truthfully and honestly to the best of my capabilities, which I believe I have.
The wind rushes through my hair as I speed through the back roads to my happy place. The humongous corn fields quickly disappear into my rear view mirror when I rip off the road into the field. I can feel the bass bouncing through out my jeep as Shania Twain blares through the speaks of my jeep. With my windows down, I’m sure everyone in 4 mile radius can hear my music too. My hands grip the leather wheel as I hit each bump of the open field. As I hear my friends singing Party For Two with me, a laugh escapes my mouth. I know my friends aren’t paying attention as I speed up to hit the steep 2 foot drop off. My body leaves my seat as I scream with joy, but Lexie and Mackenzie scream with terror as they bounce around their seats. Over dramatic
Since I can remember I have had a fascination in the biological field. From a young age, I have wanted pursue a career in the medical field because I have always have felt the need to try help everyone in my community. I have taken multiple science classes in the past, been part of multiple medical clubs, some part of the school, and another outside of school. The course that I took, and enjoyed the most out of all the courses that I have taken was during my junior year of my high school. That course was Anatomy, the study of the human body. The reason why I enjoyed taking this course was because it was the first time that I was exposed to the biological field. During this course, I was given the opportunity to dissect a cat. This was the greatest
As the light from the flashlight fades the darkness creeps in slowly; the quiet grows louder. As the fear crowds around me I cradled myself and close my eyes. I imagine what I would be doing if life was back to normal. Life where I had an average day working at the CDC (Center of Disease Control), a life where I didn't want to be spontaneous and create a cure for (insert a common but deadly incurable disease here) so those who have (insert a common but deadly incurable disease here) will be at peace and live a normal life. I wanted to expand on my career as a biomedical engineer so, I decided to find a disease to do cure. I chose (insert a common but deadly incurable disease here) and did research to know the symptoms, past and present
We Three Kings Daycare was the venue in which I chose to complete my field work. Luckily for me, my mom is one of the employees and so gaining access, setting up a theme, date, and time was one of the easier aspects of this project. The group, my mom, is typically responsible for ranges from 8-11 children ages six through eight. Due to the slightly older age group I was working with. I forego beginning with a song partly because I could not find anything relatable to my theme, and also because I planned on doing my story time after they had come in from playing outside. I figured outdoor play would be enough exertion to keep the jitters at bay. Gathering everyone in a circle, I introduced myself and had everyone go around and tell me their
The summer of 2016 I began to work in order to have money for myself and to help my family out, economically. It was definitely the worst job ever, it was in the field so it was obviously very hot, exhausting, and challenging. I arrived at work at about 6 am and it was already very hot, and I had to work in the sun all day until about 5 pm. By the end of summer, I was already all sunburned. Working in the sun almost all day and everyday was very exhausting for me. I would get home and take a shower, eat, and sleep until the next day to wake up for work again. The work was very challenging, because my wage was depending on what I made in the day. I had to work very fast in order to make many dozens of onions in order to have a good check by
While I attended a Royals game it was a hot summer's day on August 07.2015. It was 94 degrees outside but it felt like it was 107 degrees outside. When walking to the gates to the stadium it took a long time to get there because my family and I parked so far way. It felt like we walked a marathon because it was so long to walk there and it was hot outside. Once we got to the line I could feel the sweat drep down the back of my neck to my back and I did not like it. It made me all disgusting. Also in the line since everyone was so close together like a book on a shelf is close together, it did not make any better with the heat and the air was not blowing.
I will incorporate these learning into my Field Education experience by referring what I have learn from the skills lab residency and imply it to my field intern and my career. I am not for sure will I have to lead a group session; however, I will be ready and have more confidence if or when I do a group session. I will imply what I have learn from the skills lab residency as my guide.
