Introduction When I first started doing my field experience last semester, I thought it was going to be easy dealing with children for a couple of hours a day. I was wrong though. Dealing with children who just got out of school, and who have been there for eight hours, was sometimes a handful. Last semester, it was difficult, but this semester was a little bit easier. My students were better, my availability to go was better, and it was a better experience this semester. These students showed me many more aspects that there is to teaching, and it was such a memorable experience being a tutor for two semesters.
My Field Experience: Connections to Educational Psychology The program in which I tutored at was at Oasis Católico de Santa Rafaela in Athens. Its purpose, as Sister Margarita says, is, “healing hearts.” We are there to be with the children and help them with homework, and other school related activities. Oasis is set in a mobile home neighborhood across from Athens Christian. The students that go to Oasis all attend the same school in Athens. The

We had a common interest of helping the children, and “healing their hearts.” All the tutors worked together to achieve what is called Transformational Leadership. Transformational Leadership has seven components that has to do with how and why you teach. The seven components are individual support, shared goals, intellectual stimulation, culture building, rewards, high expectations, and modeling (Li, 436). The tutors at Oasis all wanted their students to feel like they have support while they are there. We have had students come to tutors and confine in them about personal problems. We try to stimulate the students intellectually, so that they can be more prepared in their academic careers when they get older. We are also building
For the past nine years I have been involved in a program called Jamestown Community Center, an after school enrichment program serving kindergarten through eighth grade students. I started out as a student in the program and became a teacher assistant as a highschool student. What got me into becoming a teacher assistant was seeing other high school teacher assistants be able to be strict with us, but at the same time be our friends. I admired their maturity at such a young age, and noticed how Jamestown was very supportive with each of the teacher assistants. Last year, I was assigned to be the teacher assistant to a first grade class who had just gotten a new teacher. I advised her to give the kids tasks in order to get the students to get
Last year, I joined Relay Tutor Corps not really knowing what to expect. Little did I know, it would change my life forever. Prior to attending Tulane, I had never considered teaching as a future career path. After taking a class with Dean Cross I became enthralled with public education in New Orleans. She was so passionate about education and the need to help change and fix certain components. Just a few short weeks into tutoring, I knew my vision for my future had changed. Every week I was eager to get in the classroom. With my 5th grade students, I immediately built a relationship. They learned to trust me and work with me. Together we were able to turn frustration into positive energy that went into their work. However, my 8th graders were
It allowed me to see education from a different perspective. Teaching in a poverty stricken place such as this really makes you appreciate the impact you are able to make on these children. If we are not there teaching them, they may never get that extra help they need to succeed from anywhere else. It is a sad world to live in not knowing whether or not you and your family will have to be removed from the country for something as simple as a father’s traffic violation. I feel like the connection between educational psychology and tutoring at Oasis was pretty evident. Almost every week I could come to tutoring and apply the concepts from the chapter to my teachings for that week. From tutoring here, I learned a great deal about how to get students motivated and wanting to learn. It is all about making the activities more than just memorizing information. In order to keep a student’s attention span, one must keep the lesson fun and interesting. This is particularly important with younger children. If you are not creative, I would suggest getting out of the education field because it plays a large role in teaching. My goal as an educator is to have an impression on every student that I come across. I intend to be able to manage an entire classroom without hassle as I was able to learn how to do with these four children and use my time with students adequately enough so that as much time as
Although most of the material being covered was at elementary school levels my service at this school was very fulfilling. I was able to hone my one-on-one tutoring skills more than I ever had before. It gave me the confidence to want to achieve more and connect with more students. My biggest fear was whether I would be able to cultivate relationships with my students, I don’t want to end up as a cold or distant teacher.
Put the gun down! Put the gun down! Pow Pow Pow. The gun shots cracked into the air as loud as thunder. One after another. We live day by day not knowing our end. In the blink of an eye our lives can be changed forever. Its life, yet even in knowing this we never expect tragedy to find us. We never expect it to affect our lives and the people we know and love. I’m going to share with you the day tragedy found my life.
Each day in the program the students would work on their homework and some kind of educational supplemental activity was done. During school hours, I would visit the student's schools. During these visits I would meet with the students themselves to see how they were doing and to also meet with teachers to see how our program could best help the students. Each students' teachers were met with at least once every nine-week grading period. In these meetings we would discuss their grades to see in what area the student might need help, as well as to talk about their behavior and assess how we might best serve the students in the program. These meetings helped our students become better students and get the most out of their educational experience. Within this role I also attended various conferences and trainings to understand more of the schools curriculums and techniques regarding behavior and student involvement. My first experience of working within a school environment was the most pivotal in my desire to work in
Last summer I wanted to work and earn a little cash and distract myself and not be home all summer. I didn't know where to apply so I applied everywhere I was even open to working in the fields my parents told me that the fields were the last place they ever wanted me to work. My mom and step dad Raul always told me that field work wasn't easy and that it was not for me but I didn't listen.
At the beginning being a techie meant all I had to do is report to the office and do what we love best this was sort out end user issues. Never occurred to me how I dress or how my mannerism reflects the type of professional I am. I would report to the office with a T Shirt and If it was a Friday or working in the “Field”, I would wear sweat pants.
During the completion of my field experience, I was able to concentrate on the growth and development of myself professionally. Amidst the many positive experiences I gained working between experience professionals, I was also able to acquire and enhance my own teaching skills. For me the experience was an eye opener, being a future educator with little experience I was able to gain many details and exposures to the many useful resources parent have within the community. After being in several different community resources I was afforded a noble benefit from the knowledge gained from the professionals I met and the parents they serviced.
1. The 2nd case study made me reflect on my first head coaching job in football. I was hired by a school in south Texas with the help of a friend I coached with in Oklahoma. He had moved back to his hometown and started teaching and coaching at his high school. He contacted me about the opening and two months later I was hired. I hired him to be one of my assistants and even made sure that he was paid well as a thank you. I was very disappointed with the way he coached that year. I had already make arrangements to move him to a non-coaching position for the next season. I realize I never spoke with him about my expectations or made him aware of how I felt during the season. I identity with Dr. Skinner is some regards. I was caught up in the other aspects of teaching, coaching, and AD duties, I neglected to take care of that issue. I understand that it is OK to hire a trusted colleague or friend but the expectations of them should not be any different of anyone else.
She was looking out the kitchen window, past her back porch and white picket fence. She was staring out into the field were her husband would spend all day on his tractor pulling a metal brush hog with its sharp unyielding blade cutting away at the helpless young shoots of grass. Now the field is overgrown with weeds and wild flowers she stares at the field and laughs softly and says to herself, “Oh Wilber how badly I wanted you to fall off your damn tractor cut your skinny old body in
My voice is heard through my writing; although seemingly silent within the language of ink veiled across my paper, it is powerful, deafening, resilient. I speak my mind without speaking, and it is, to me, somehow worth more than any vibration of vocal cords. When writing, I am free; free to clearly express thoughts that usually turn into a muddled mess on my tongue; free to “say” what I wish; free to be
I believe from past performances my voice has become accustomed to holding deep tone notes. My voice is comfortable hitting any low notes making it great for operatic pieces, pieces that require a strong voice to get an emotion across, or generally any theatric role that requires the large, stoic kind of character. Past instructors have also said I have a natural talent to sing along without getting caught up in the melody of other instruments. My understanding is that beginners tend to sing at the same tone as of the instruments in the accompaniment when they should be singing at a different key, but my previous teachers and peers have said they’ve never seen me have this issue. Hearing their praise made me happy, but I would like to expand my vocal range so I could hit higher notes perhaps fitting an alto or maybe a soprano and give them something even more
My most significant experience in my life is unforgettable. I was there with my sisters, my mom, and my dad. It was the most horrifying event that I have ever witnessed. The daunting image in my head is still clear as day, as though it happened yesterday. This event did not affect only me, but also my family. The story that I am about to tell you may change the way you see things and it may not. All I can say is, it
