In relation to the field of social work, ever since I was a small child I have had an interest in promoting social development and bring change to the society and the World at large. I started by performing and completing voluntary jobs that made me feel easy and have a peaceful mind. Currently, I work with a renowned child protection services group. My interest in protecting the rights, freedoms, and privileges was magnified when I encountered a child who had been chased away from home. His name was ‘Walter’ he lived in the cold streets with no food, shelter, water or education. My first encounter with Walter was sorrowful. I could not imagine how he was surviving in the streets. When it comes to personal qualifications as a social worker; I believe I have the required skills in that I am an active listener. Social work requires an individual who actively listens and responds in a positive way when it comes to solving a social problem. I also believe I qualify as a social worker in that I am a very organized person. The organization is very important when it comes to social work. Lack of organization may lead to disruption of social activities and loss of time. I am a critical thinker who has to weigh and analyze options and scenarios from every existing …show more content…
A positive helping relationship is built and founded on trust and language. In this case, I would say that I have a good ability when it comes creating positive relationships in that I am an eloquent speaker, listener and above all I am good at motivating the public. Being an eloquent, good listener and speaker has enabled me to become a traverse person who can be able to make professional judgments that are true and significant. All forms of social work require one to be a professional judge who can be able to relate and predict outcomes and events in an accurate
The history of mental health in the United States show a robust movement towards the mental healthcare system we have today. Prior to the 19th century, individuals with mental health issues were widely considered to be demonically possessed, thus contributing to the stigmatization of mental illness and the proliferation of poor treatment conditions. However, in the 1800s, there was a dramatic change in mental healthcare in the U.S. The government took a proactive role in treating the mentally ill, leading to the dawn of state psychiatric facilities.
I am passionate on helping people and making changes in others’ lives. Like I stated before, my mother had been trapped herself in the apologetic emotion for years. The mental burden had made her down. Therefore, I decided to help my mother get rid of the self-accusation, by using the knowledge I learned in the Human Services major. To illustrate, I was telling her that it was not her fault of divorce, and she was not showing me the negative image of a marriage. Instead, I admire her braveness of ending a marriage when it was necessary, especially in the time when people were stereotyping divorced women and at the place where people were being judgmental. Now, her self-blameless has been reduced, and she told me that she was not felt as guilty
My interest in community service began in high school when I joined Key Club, a community service and leadership building organization focused on volunteer work. As time went on, I became the Junior Board Director, representing and guiding eleventh grade students during volunteer projects. We raised money for ZZ (UNICEF) and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (ZZ), organized social carnivals for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and helped set up and run-walks for March of Dimes and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, to name a few. I enjoy volunteering because it gives me a chance to share my many skills while learning new skills and working with people of all
Ethics is defined as, “an area of study that deals with ideas about what is good and bad behavior” (citation). As a social worker we must abide by the National Association of Social Work Code of Ethics and follow the “rules” and withhold the set of morals and values in practice. Sometimes we are placed in certain situations that go against these values and we as professionals need to become aware of that and act upon them appropriately.
On Monday, January 11 2016 my fall break was over and I found myself back in at internship at Leland elementary. After almost three weeks of vacation time I must say I was not ready for the event that was about to take place that day. Around noon in one of the classrooms I was alerted of the disruptive behavior of some of the students in that class. As I walked in the class I noticed to young ladies in each other faces saying vigor language and within seconds they were fighting.
I do have 7.5 years work experiences into the social work field. I started my career as a case manager with AIMS in 2014, in 2015 I worked with Life Without Barriers as a Case Coordinator, afterwards I joined Save The Children Australia as a family support worker. Currently I am doing case management services with Life Without Barriers. This prolonged journey of my career is reflecting my commitment towards work in serving the people.
"Louis McClymont, the nurse will see you know."As I took the dreaded walk to treatment room B, my fear of needles began to take over, the only time I ever had a jag before was when I was a baby, and that was too long ago to remember. I took a seat on the administering table; the nurse could see my body was shaking with fear. She tried to distract me from the enormous needle that was heading my way. "You're having a jag for yellow fever, where are you going?"
When we’re asked as children what we wanted to do with our life, it is usually not what we end up doing at all. My life experiences and challenges have pushed me to do and think about a career that I would have never thought nor known about. Social Work has had an enormous impact on my life and has pushed me to pursue a career in it. Although it is not a well-known or popular major, it is where I feel as if I will succeed the most not only in my career, but also in my life and goals. Growing up, I had dreams of being an artist, but as I experienced life, I realized I wanted to do something with my life that positively impacted others. My adolescence could be considered a rollercoaster; with lows as far down as losing my parents, and highs as far up as succeeding in high school and getting accepted to my top choice
Along with the experiences that have led me to be interested in social work, there have been others that have created strengths in me that can be beneficial to a social worker. I have moved around my entire life. Getting to live in all four corners of the country, I have been exposed to a variety of diverse people and places. Because of this, I have gained an ability to assimilate well into whatever new setting I am
Between the dates from September 26th to November 9th, there was perfect attendance by all of the members of the group and the facilitators. Knowing that the facilitators worked on the mezzo groups with much dedicated, pushed each member to show up on time every session. Speaking for myself, I enjoyed having a social work student facilitate over the group because there was an option to discuss topics only related to social workers. For other classes, the topics discussed within a group could not be related to the profession I plan on pursuing. Also within our group, there was a sense of bonding since we worked with these students on a weekly basis. Knowing that each of us will be helping out each other within our career at James Madison was
Social work is a career that I have been interested in since I was a young girl. Caring for and helping others is something I am very passionate about. My interest for social work can be followed back to my younger days, when I was involved in Girls Scouts, volunteered throughout the community, and later on worked at the Department of Human Services. Working in the community and the church’s in town has given me satisfaction, and has made me realize the compassion I have for others who are in need. Working at the Department of Human Services has given me the opportunity to come into contact with the case workers, and to get available insight on what their job consist of on a daily basis.
1.The experiences I have had that have prepared me to pursue a master’s degrees in social work have been time at the Boys & Girls Club, being an officer for an honor society, and my placement at a social service agency. While I was attending community college, I began working at the Boys & Girls Club of South County for their before and after school program. During my time there, I learned the importance of time management, and I got to see the impact parent involvement could have on a student. The after school program was going through many changes and began incorporating more educational activities. As a Group Leader, I had to schedule my day to implement the new activities, like comic book readings and STEM projects, as well as the daily journals, homework time, snack time and the enrichment activity of the day. The 5 hours we had with the students were booked back to back so it was important to plan the days ahead of time, and prepare for the next day after the students had gone. As for parent involvement, after spending hours with my group of 19 students every week, I was able to tell which parents had a bigger involvement in their student’s
My scheduled flight from Paris lands on the tarmac at St. Louise this afternoon at three, an Uber instantly response to my call and by six, my Hotel room felt homey. For the past two years, I have traveled intensely searching for hidden secrets of magic to add to my show. I’m a professional magician working under the stage name of Vanish. I have performed on numerous occasions in Vegas, London, Paris, and the French Riviera, made several guest appearances on the David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon shows and my name appears all over the social network. I believe in lifelong learning and whenever the opportunity arises, I attend major magic symposiums. Therefore, when my manager pointed out that I had a five-day hiatus between gigs, I immediately
My first professional development was a field trip with Ms. McGovern’s 3rd Grade class to watch the Orlando Philharmonic’s concert made especially for elementary kids. Through a powerpoint and narration from the conductor and our host, students were introduced to many classical pieces, including “Night on Bald Mountain” and “The Firebird Suite”, as well as the theme to Jurassic Park. For certain pieces, such as a piece from Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life or a piece from Swan Lake, they would also incorporate opera singers and ballet dancers. One of the highlights of the concert was when the audience got to participate by singing along to “What a Wonderful World”. Overall, this was a concert that seemed to know its audience would need more
To the person(s) who has been given the important but tedious honor of sorting through all the personal statements and letters of intent,
