My journey through English Comp Beginning my journey in English Comp I can say that I did not have high expectations for this class. I did not believe that is was really going to have any type of impact on my writing, I was wrong. Here is my journey through English Comp. The first day of taking this class is realized there was a sundry of antic people in this class. Dylan who they call, “Arms” dwindles everyone who is compared to him because of his massive size. Caleb or “Joe” gives Mrs. Fleming perturbation and fury because he does not know when to talk talking. Mrs. Fleming always gives “Joe” a mar look whenever he ask her a question that she just told us the answer to. She will then upbraid him and tell him to be quiet. I glad they never
My achievement of becoming literate in both English and Spanish, after overcoming a myriad of obstacles distinguishes my literacy history. Writing was one of the things I didn’t like to do as a child. I always thought writing was a waste of time and that I wasn’t going to need it in life. Even though I didn’t invest much time writing, I was one of the best writers in all my classes, probably because I was very dedicated in the other subjects and I loved reading adventure books. I learned how to read and write by the age of four, since in my native country “the Dominican Republic”, kids are enrolled in school at the age of three; usually parents start their child’s education at home before that age.
I have a love-hate relationship with writing. I can write well according to some of my peers; though this could just be from the fact that I seem like the quiet, studious, type who has spent most of her time with the straight "A" nerds who went on to top tier schools such as Stanford. Sometimes I am not too sure of my own writing abilities. On most essays, I get a little bit above average grades and every once in a while I get a few more points than usual. I have noticed that my writing is better when I have to write about a topic I am passionate or know a lot about. The more I have to work with the better. Otherwise, my writing seems poor, forced, and somewhat bland. It usually follows a poor or basic thesis statement and lazy paragraphs. I believe motivation helps me to write better,
I was in your Rennaissance English class at Horn from 2001- 2004. I attended Stanford University for undergrad before moving to Washington, DC where I taught middle school math. After I left the classroom, I was a coach of first-year math teachers and then began coaching school principals on instructional leadership. This summer I moved to Cambridge, MA where I'm the Chief of Staff for the Achievement
As a Junior, in the spring semester I have grown more as a student and a global citizen. This spring semester I have gained more confidence as taking action and gain more knowledge. I have been able to take action in my community by doing a civil rights project for my AP Language and Composition class. This semester I have grown more knowledge as a student in my Digital Literacy class by creating a Fake News Essay to address how everything that is on the internet or media can be fake.
Looking back to when I typed my first AP Language and Composition paper, I can honestly say that my writing skills have drastically improved. I started off not knowing any writing strategies and thought that typing three pages was a lot for just one paper. After completing the course, I can now write a full eight paged paper using one of the three writing strategies that we learned. Before this class, I was never a skilled writer and the thought of taking APLAC intimidated me because I did not think I was capable of completing the course. I never imagined myself taking this class because In my mind I simply was not smart enough to take it. However, due to all the positive comments I received about the class and how it improved my friends writing, I
I have learned a lot in just 16 short weeks. I have learned how to organize my thoughts on paper, even when I have a fear of a writing assignment. I learned about pre-writing, outlining, rough draft, and finals. In each of these steps, I have learned to depend on each of them. They also help me find out what I need to do next. I always try to reflect on what I have written, even if it may be terrible. I use every bit of information I have to make sure I keep my thoughts in order. My strengths have increased as a writer. I love to write, and I know what to write about when given a topic. I feel strongly capable of writing more assignments, and essays in the future, especially in my Composition 2 class next semester. Having 2 English classes this semester really helped me with being able to
My experience with writing has been very up and down because I have a hard time focusing on the topic. I would say that’s something I need to honestly work on because my attitude is if I'm not into it then I'm not doing it simple. Some of my past teachers in high school said that I could write but I honestly don’t know about now. I'll admit that I've gotten lazy in the sense that if I'm not into the work then I'll just pass it with a D or just retake it. I need to get out of that and just suck it up and get it over and done with.
In English 1, I did not learn material that might be needed in Honors English 2. A few of my friends had your class during the first term. They told me some of the things I should learn, provided I wanted your advice. I was hoping you could tell me what to expect and if I ever need help what I could do. I do not know how to annotate, write pearls or thesis. I am aware it will not be easy, however, I know this could be good for me.
My growth in English 101 was a long and difficult journey for me this would be my second time around taking this class. The thing that was difficult for me in class was the fact my medication made me drowsy so it made it difficult for me to stay awake in class some days. I was lucky this time around I had a teacher that was energetic and kept me awake enough to understand what we are supposed to do in the next paper. When we did a new paper we learned a new style of writing and strategies on how to write it more effectively. I would say the most difficult paper that I had to write was the innovation research paper but I learned how to find credible resources faster. I learned a lot in this class and grew a lot as a writer. So the five WPA topics
From a young age, I have had an interest in reading and writing. When my mother found out she was pregnant with me, my sister, Kaitlyn, was four years old. Kaitlyn had just begun reading when she found out she would soon have a baby sister. My sister, eager to share her reading skills, begged my mother if she could read stories to me while I was still in the womb. Once I was born, the story-telling continued. I gravitated towards books at an early age, most likely because my sister was reading by the time I was big enough to hold a book. Reading has always been around me. Bright colors caught my attention as a child. If a book had a colorful cover, I wanted someone to read it to me. When I was three years old, I started learning how to read in my preschool class. While learning to talk, my way of telling someone I wanted or needed something was to point. My mother would tell me, “use your words”. Because my preschool teacher
If I could say who I am as a learner, I would say that I am a risk-taker, and am very knowledgeable. I like this because I am not afraid to try new things, but I still know what I am doing. If you don’t be a risk taker and try new things, you can never learn anything. These are two very good traits to have, but I still have goals. I want to be more reflective and look back on my mistakes so I can learn better. My goals for behavior are to talk less and get more work done. The best way for me to work is to get a lot done and then take a lot of little breaks, sometimes I get carried away and start to talk and it gets crazy. I learned about this trait when I was a lot younger when I would clean my room. I would get distracted and start playing around, and then I would stop and clean really fast so I could take a little break again. I think this is a result of what type of learner I am. My color quiz results said I am yellow. That means I am very enthusiastic and try to change things where I can. I like to change things to make them more fun. So when I work, I take
My biggest challenge starting this program is getting acclimated to a school setting and schedule once again. I started my Master’s program in 2008 and I completed my degree requirements in 2010. Since then, I’ve begun working full-time whereas during that timeframe I was working on a part-time schedule. While working I’ve accumulated a number of assignments that I am responsible for and my work schedule changes often due to those assignments. So, not only do my duties change but my schedule changes quite often. With my current assignment, I’m working as a New Hire Instructor for a federal agency and I am assuming all duties of this assignment along with my regular position.
As a part of ENG 201 class requirement, I was able to attend three workshop sessions with my peers. Putting us in groups with people from similar educational backgrounds and ambitions was accommodating. This enabled us to understand each other’s paper on a deeper lever including familiarizing ourselves with our writing. I really appreciated the concept of my peers going over my paper and discussing it amongst themselves while giving me suggestions, feedback, and appraisals. It indeed helped me grow as a writer and incorporate the constructive criticisms given to me wherever possible to improve my paper.
Last semester went by so fast i couldn’t keep up. This is what i’m going to be doing this semester to improve all my grades. The goals will be talking about is language arts goals, my other classes goals and goals from outside. These are my goals for 2017.
English courses are never easy. They are challenging and intimidating. When students think about having to take an English course, they dread it. They think of all the long essays that will come, and the precise grading of grammar and paragraph form. It’s a familiar feeling for all students, yet this class somehow proved me wrong. This class has taught me so much about English and has made me enjoy writing. Who would have thought?
