Personal Narrative: My Journey To The Naval Academy

I have been accepted to AFS-USA's international exchange program to Norway. I will be spending my sophomore year living with a host family and going to school at a local upper secondary school. I am awaiting the information regarding where I will be located in Norway, as well as my paperwork for a Norwegian visa. As long as the final stages of my application go through, I will depart this August and return the following July.

Several months, I have been tossing the idea about joining the Navy. My family was aware about Navy was possibility option. Recently, I have contacted a Navy Recruiter, and I have not told my family about me talking to a recruiter. My family is important aspect of my life, so the conversation needs to happen sooner than later. When I bring up the Navy conversation, my intention would ease my family in acceptance of their daughter leaving the state. Joining the Navy would impact me and my family, and the impact on my family would tribute to the difficult conversation. Underlie feeling have huge impact on person’s attributions and judgement. A difficult conversation affects the identity of a person. Therefore, intention by the conversation was important.

As surprising as it may sound, I have been doing community service since the sixth grade and it is a new experience each time. It all began with a community clean up known as 'Keep McAllen Beautiful' as we got there everyone seemed excited to be there. It was beautiful to see such unity inside of my community, and I decided from then on that I would like continue helping out where it is needed. As I joined the National Honor Society my chances of providing my services increased, and I decided that I would assume a position of leadership when needed. I became the society's president, which allowed me to develop my time management skills, creativity, and efficiency. I organized an fundraiser for the hurricane Harvey disaster victims where all

Due to my involvement in my school, I have a plethora of opportunities that affect my community. As a member of the National Honor Society, we stay involved in activities that benefit our chapter and Walkerton itself. For instance, we annually undergo a food drive at our school in order to supply food for the people in the community. Then we transport the food to the food pantry and once every month we take turns to distribute the food to the people who need it. This distribution we do for the community aids the people in need as most people receiving the food are unable to transport the food themselves. Alongside the food drives, I spend hours of volunteering for concessions, tutoring students after school, and aiding for the band teacher.

To society I seem to be very talkative on the other hand I can be intelligent. For example was in National Honor Society, had above average grades, I was very outgoing and did a lot of sports and clubs throughout the years. People would also agree that I always have been very clumsy. In general people would say I am not an overall serious person.

When I was 14 years old I had the opportunity to go to the United States Naval Academy, and witness my Cousin Graduate. During this time I was undecided in what I wanted to do with my life, but when all the Midshipmen tossed their hats in the air I immediately knew the Naval Academy was where I need to be. The United States Naval Academy Mission Statement says, “To develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty...”. As I look at the mission statement it is not just words it is a lifestyle that you must live by. The words that stick out to me are duty, honor, and of course loyalty. Duty means your obligation to put your team's task above everything else even yourself.

The life experience that made me diverse was the moment I stepped foot on U.S. land at age three and became undocumented. Being undocumented became my identity. Fear of being deported grew with me, hiding me in the shadows. I never saw past high school, so I started to take advantage of my supposed last years of learning by maintaining the highest grades I could earn. In return, I have been able to join the National Honor Society, enabling me the opportunity to graduate high school with honors. Seeing my journey going from thinking I was not able to attend college because of my status to being able to graduate with honors has taught I am deserving of a higher education. Being undocumented has not restrained me from pursuing my education,

“What defines you as a person is not the life you were born into, but what you made of it” Shahid Kapoor said. This quote can mean many things, but to me, it means that the things that are given to you are not as important as the things you have to work for. The things I have had to work for over the last 17 years of my life have shaped the person I am today.

I was walking down the hallway on my way to lunch when I saw people with a paper in their hand, curiously I walked up to my friend and said “what’s that?” my friend asked “NHS” I didn’t immediately panic, because I thought maybe I would get mines later on, as the day went on, heart became to explode with disappointed, erupting when the bell rang and i realized that it was official Malik wouldn't be a member of Nhs.

I was five when I saw an f-22 Raptor break the sound barrier. There was a lull in the atmosphere as it silently glided across the sky, I counted...one, two, three; it was out of sight. Behind it came the sound like a tsunami on an empty beach, crashing and rattling everything in its path. It was beautiful. I looked to my aunt, uncle, and mother all in battle dress with a grin. I knew I had to fly. The discipline I learned from growing up in a military family has prepared and inspired my pursuit of flight.

A true leader stands high on on the pillars of success: dedication, servitude, respectability, and honesty. The mark of a fulfilled life is not one who has collected many awards, not one who has an insurmountable amount of money and fame, it is one who has touched the most souls in his journey of life. A leader destined for greatness will touch many people along their journey to the top. In my short years on this Earth I have made it my mission from the start to leave a lasting impact on everyone I come in contact with and as a student of Howard University I will continue my mission without fault. My high school requires twenty-five service hours each year of high school in order to graduate, plus an additional fifteen to be involved in National Honor Society. While this may make all of the community services I have participated in sound like a mere school requirement, it is actually the complete opposite of that. Without those school requirements, I am not sure how involved I would be in my community. But due to them, I am always involved in some way.

Four or Five years ago if you were to tell me that I would be confidently applying to the University of Miami I would have laughed. Through high school I did not give much effort and like most of my peers, thought that furthering my education was my only option. Nearing the end of my senior year I started realizing that no noteworthy university would even consider accepting someone like me. As the days ticked away, I applied to a nearby college with an incredibly high acceptance rate and found myself opening an acceptance letter a few weeks later.

how did I become an honor collage student? well to be honest, I was pretty much surprised that I got into This great program In a matter of fact, I didn’t know that this kind of programs was excited .Because It wasn’t a long time since I moved here since i came from a country that didn’t had these kind of oppourtnties so we were privation from these things. So I didn’t have know about these programs and how to get Into these programs and what they could do to help you .So how did I get into the honor class , What did It mean to me getting Into this program and how this program affected on me .
