Personal Narrative: My Way Of Sociology Would Better My Career

I have always held a deep interest in pursuing a career in Sociology and Criminology as it holds a huge impact on people's lives and the society that we live in, so studying Sociology at A-level has allowed me to view society in a more critical and objective way. Covering crime and deviance in Sociology has enhanced my fascination in topics including punishment and the causes of crime such as ethnicity, gender and class. Having only studied Sociology at A-Level, my evaluation skills and social awareness have significantly improved due to looking at real world issues and forming my own opinions. The history of mental health in the United States show a robust movement towards the mental healthcare system we have today. Prior to the 19th century, individuals with mental health issues were widely considered to be demonically possessed, thus contributing to the stigmatization of mental illness and the proliferation of poor treatment conditions. However, in the 1800s, there was a dramatic change in mental healthcare in the U.S. The government took a proactive role in treating the mentally ill, leading to the dawn of state psychiatric facilities.

I plan to become a Registered Nurse. As a nurse it is important to understand the patient completely and know where they come from. In sociology people are described in a "group" or "communtiy" perspective. Understand the many different varieties of people in society and fully understanding the meaning of "Sociology" will benefit nurses in not only one way but many. In the medical field there will be many ethical questions which can be partially covered via the study of sociology. Taking this sociology class will allow me to relate to my patients, co-workers, and the different varieties of families that I would be encountering. I started in the Human Services Program here at Columbia College with the goal of working in social services. I personally have been through the foster system and met many social service workers. It’s odd because as a foster child I extremely disliked these social workers I dealt with. I felt like they were individuals who were picking apart my life and ruining everything. What I didn’t realize was how much these individuals were really doing for me. Now as an adult I have realized that a career I once despised so deeply, I now want for myself. The purpose of this paper is to establish what being a social worker entails. I am a Social Worker and community organizer with a 20+ year history of assisting children, individuals, and families from diverse backgrounds in achieving their goals. I am familiar with social media, promoting, advertising, and as well, working with young adults, under-served population and those with HIV/AIDS and other physical and or mental disabilities. Communication skills, interpersonal skills, and leadership skills are crucial to being able to express yourself and to get along with others, something that will come up a lot in the career. Analytical skills, statistic and research design, and computer literacy will come up when working with the “science-y” part. Sociologists need to be able to develop ways to be able to analyze the situation and draw conclusions through data. Last, but not least, cross-cultural understanding is essential to studying sociology. As a sociologist, I would need to be accepting of all cultures and get rid of traditional stereotypes in order to understand certain diversities

Going into Social work I had a brief idea of what was entailed to be an excellent social worker. After having known people to have awful experiences, myself included, and those who had great experiences, I came into Social Work with High hopes that I will be the best I can be. However, after two social worker practicums, jobs in the field, and graduating with a social worker diploma, I have discovered that a competent and professional social is much more complex, and challenging (I want a more positive word here) to achieve then I originally thought. Fortunately for me my personal, professional, and education goals is one in the same. My goal is to one day preach and teach the word of God. I must first equip myself with the skills necessary to bring forth God’s word. I understand being able to be an effective communicator and a critical thinker are some skills that I will need in order to be successful in my ministry. Being a responsible leader is very important in today’s society. I want to not only a have church of my own, but go aside the four walls so I can be a global citizen with the gifts God has gave me spreading Christianity through the world.

1. The development of my interest in social work originated my senior year of high school. Due to a series of events I ran away from home shortly after the passing of my adoptive single mother. Although I was adopted, my relationship with my family was close to nothing. On account of my weak family ties, I quickly became a homeless high school student with a nonexistent support system. As I struggled to find stability in my life, the school social worker had reached out to me. During the mist of my turmoil the school social worker, Mr. Hawkins, was a valuable support and lifeline. With his encouragement I was able to achieve stable housing and employment. Within a year I was able to graduate from high school and I started my first year in undergrad.

I do have 7.5 years work experiences into the social work field. I started my career as a case manager with AIMS in 2014, in 2015 I worked with Life Without Barriers as a Case Coordinator, afterwards I joined Save The Children Australia as a family support worker. Currently I am doing case management services with Life Without Barriers. This prolonged journey of my career is reflecting my commitment towards work in serving the people.

Between the dates from September 26th to November 9th, there was perfect attendance by all of the members of the group and the facilitators. Knowing that the facilitators worked on the mezzo groups with much dedicated, pushed each member to show up on time every session. Speaking for myself, I enjoyed having a social work student facilitate over the group because there was an option to discuss topics only related to social workers. For other classes, the topics discussed within a group could not be related to the profession I plan on pursuing. Also within our group, there was a sense of bonding since we worked with these students on a weekly basis. The two careers in psychology that interest me the most are A counselor and social worker.

My time at Wheeler has taught me mant lesson. I have learned lessons that helped me with my academics. I also learned extremely priceless life lessons, such as the importance of setting goals. When I was in third grade i wanted to have an objective for my remaining years at Wheeler. I decided that my goal was going to be to become a productive student. I wanted to get better grades and be involved in school activites when i had the chance. In fourth grade i came in with a negative adittude thinking i could never accomplish my goal. However with the support of my friends and fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Greco I managed to get better grades and stay focused on my goal. I was a completley different person. About four years ago a social worker in my school district resigned from her position mid-year, and she recently returned to share her incredible story with us. Much like me, she was a hands-on learner and wanted to help those in need. After learning there was an opportunity to travel to Romania to help children, she jumped at the chance. There was no monetary compensation for what she was about to do, but there was an intrinsic value that would be greater than any monetary payment. After two years she became a paid missionary with the Church of the Nazarene in Sighisoara, Romania setting up camps and shelters for the children. Her journey has made me realize I don’t want to learn about or experience the world solely from books or lectures.

I have been trained to become a chemist since the first year of my high school. This is a challenging career, requiring analytical thinking, attention to details, and adaptability. It is also a well-paying and promising career. However, chemistry is not what I have always dreamt of doing the rest of my life. As someone who is concerned about the development of sub-Saharan Africa, I came to a conclusion that what this region needs is not only scientists but also people who know and understand leadership and international affairs. In this paper, I compare my strengths and abilities to the qualities that one should have in order to excel as a chemist and a diplomat.
