Personal Narrative: My Working During Internship Experience

For my internship, I served under the Allegheny County Health Department in Pittsburgh, PA. I served as the National Health Corps Member for the Women, Infants, and Children Program as their Care Coordinator for all nine offices. Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a supplemental nutrition agency that targets pregnant and postpartum women and young children ages 5 and under who are at risk of malnutrition. My supervisor Annie Nagy along with my mentors in the office made sure I was able to receive all of the materials and resources I would need to have a complete and successful internship.

Everyone has their first memory when they have to enter the adult world, mine just happened to be my junior year of high school. This year was just a little glimpse of what was going to be the rest of my life. Getting my first job was bitter sweet. I had to learn how to manage my time between school, sports, and now a job. After my first week of school I had to start my new job.

In the process of me completing an internship at the Department of Human Services, (DHS) in the department of children and families, I was asked to supervise a home visit with the non-custodial parent which in this particular case (father). So in this case the visit always takes place at the local park within the community. The custodial parent (mother) drove by the park and seen that the child’s father brought along his present girlfriend’s daughter to accommodate him with his visit with his son. I have a petty theft misdemeanor. I was going through a hard time and was trying to get food for my family. I was given a citation and ordered to pay a fine. I played football in high school for all 4 years. My freshmen and sophomore year I wasn't very good. I was a backup and never played. Then came along my junior year, I was still undersized and didn't start but I improved my skill greatly and I started to increase my work ethic. The off-season before my junior year I went hard in the weight room and became strong. I also lost some weight and gained some height. That's hard work in the offseason is what lead to me having a great senior year. My senior year was full of emotion, I felt tired, determined, and at the end of the season I felt sadness with no regret and the love for my brothers. The main task of my internship was to gain more experience and knowledge of our respective field. Overall, the experience proved to be both enjoyable and rewarding. During this internship I used the skills that I learned from my Medical Assistant class and used them in the real world scenarios at the hospital. Also while I there I was exposed to new experiences. Such as performing Urine test on Drug and alcohol patients. For this procedure I had to stand in the restroom with the patient's and watch them urinate into a cup. As teenager, many people say their adolescence is one of the most important phases in anyone’s life. As a teenager, you get to experience many great events like going to high school football games, dating your first boyfriend or girlfriend, getting your driver license, and graduating from high school. While some people around me flourish in their athletics, others succeed in their schoolwork. Personally, my most outstanding strength stands as my work ethic. When certain activities do not come naturally for me, I work as hard as possible to get better at them. Multiple instances of this have occurred over the past few years. For example, this year I participated in lacrosse for the first time. I usually spent my time playing soccer, but after a concussion that prevented me from playing again, I decided to give something else a a try. When I heard about Generations during one of my AMS First Year Intern meetings, I quickly found myself connected with the club’s motive to integrate and support the Kingston senior community through one on one interactions. Specifically, I was excited to hear about the opportunity for the club to assist seniors at Providence Manor. Being highly interested in the medical field as well as with my experience working with the elderly, I believe that I am an excellent candidate for the Facilities Coordinator position.      I was able to be successful in this internship because I had to utilize and develop many new skills. I used my interpersonal skills such as: coping strategies; peer relationships and effective social skills; communication, problem-solving techniques, decision-making, conflict resolution, how to work in a team, where everyone depends on each other and a lot of patience. I developed many new skills such as multitasking, problem solving/decision making, and leadership qualities. I learned that I am a role model. It is important to develop a good relationship with students; however, I must keep in mind that I am expected to behave myself in a professional manner at all times. I also learned some of the important skills of a teacher such as: how to provide direct instructions, clarify content, teach skills and answer the students questions; help students identify their skills, abilities, and long term plans regarding education and personal problems.

An internship can also heighten the awareness of community issues, motivates to create opportunities, embrace new ideas, and give direction to positive change. A successful internship can provide valuable information in making decisions about the direction of future studies or employment. An internship is an opportunity to not only use and develop industry-related knowledge and skills, but also to enhance some of the skills that are transferable to any professional work setting. For some people, the internship is the first introduction to the world of work. No matter where the skills and understanding of professionalism lie, internship is a chance to develop them even further.

As you know I've been a part of the breakthrough community for a while now. I was sure that summer 2016 was going to be my last summer with Breakthrough New Orleans, but going through my academic catalog for school, I am supposed to do an internship in my major this summer, or during the 1st semester of my sophomore year. I decided to major in Psychology with a concentration in Education, and child development because I realized while working at Breakthrough that I have a more impact on the students when I'm advising, and having the one on one conversations making sure everything is okay, so they can be successful in class. I loved teaching, but I feel that I have a gift outside of the classroom.

An internship is no good if you do not make it work. Thus making the internship work for you is very important. To start out the student must want to direct their full attention to the internship because the internship is pretty much starting out their future. First impressions are usually suppose to be good so a student should not go into an internship thinking that it is going to be easy and that they can just blow through it. Internships should be beneficial for the students and the employer’s. The internship program coordinator should look for a few things when they are picking out the companies in which they are going to send their students to learn and gain experience. First off the firm in which you might be thinking about going into for an intern must have work for you to do. Sitting behind a desk all day staring out the window will not teach you anything. It also helps out when there are positive people surrounding the student intern. “For an internship to work, the firm’s principals must be available to supervise and teach.”(Berger 30) The student intern will usually have lots of questions and if there are good people around the intern to answer his or her questions and correct their mistakes then the internship will be quite beneficial.

My work history sounds extremely disjointed to most people. My boss even asks me to give an account of it to our new hires, almost like a party trick. However, I believe the variety in the vocations I have spent my time in has given me a unique perspective and work ethic. I started my work-life as the third generation of my family in the funeral industry. I spent nights and weekends assisting with after-hours visitations and wakes, making sure the families who had recently lost a loved one were well cared for. I'm not sure I realized it at the time, but that job gave me the perfect platform to learn to listen well and use my gift of compassion. Like many college students, I spent some time working retail at the local mall. Quite the culture shock after working with friends and family in an industry I had grown up around.

My internship experience proved to be valuable in terms of exposure and knowledge. Attending the M-1 Rail Community Advisory Council meetings were very rewarding. I was able to observe and interact with the public on their thoughts about M-1 Rail. The internship has taught me that it is important to learn how to demonstrate professionalism but courteous behavior at all times. My internship has definitely given me a better understanding of my skill, but most importantly, I’ve come to learn that I am not alone. This job has taught me that almost everybody is in my same position. Thanks to my I know that if I continue to work hard things will fall into place. Being my first position in an office atmosphere, I didn’t know exactly what to expect.
