Personal Narrative: My Writing Process

Good Essays

Although my writing process flows very well for me, while originally writing the poems I found myself in a very bad writers block. I feel as though I’ve been in a writers block for a couple months now but only recently got out of it and that is where the revisions for my pieces in this portfolio came from. This class really did help me find my own voice and how I want to write. It also helped me with my songwriting and it inspired me to make music which is what one of my goals and passions are as of right now. I also journal and sketchbook every single day and this class is what helped me get into the habit of it. Eventually I learned to just like to do it instead of it being a chore. Free verse made me feel a lot less tense and under pressure/stress because it allowed me to have no fear or expectation of what my writing was supposed to be like. I noticed that I used off rhyme a lot of the time and I also played around with the punctuation and capitalization of the poems. I did this not only for the presentation of the poems, but also for emphasis on what the poems were about. Not only did the small check ups that we did in the beginning of the class every day help me open up, but also hearing other people's work when they volunteered to share gave me ideas for what I would want to write at the time. The poems that we would read in class also gave me inspiration in deciding which poems of mine I wanted to put into this final portfolio. For example, Hawk by Diana Adams was one of my favorite pieces that we analyzed and read in the class. I loved this poem mostly because of how abstract it was. It seemed as though it could have been telling multiple different stories in one because there were so many different ways of interpreting what the poem was really about. It was interesting watching the class all trip over each other because of our theories and thought on the poem and I believe that when a poem or piece of art sparks conversation like that, it is magical. This inspired me to try to make some of my final pieces more subjective than objective. Meaning I wanted my work to be more up to interpretation instead of the meaning of said poem being set in stone. The free verse writing that we analyzed in class that talked about a list of things that were lost or gained by a person also helped me in writing one of the pieces for my portfolio. The poem was titled,
