The year 2002 was a year full of new beginnings for my family and I. I was ten years old, my youngest brother was born in February, and we moved away from Tennessee, and our family there, to Texas in October. Little did I know, the birth of my brother nor the move were going to be as significant as the next event that occurred. In January of 2003 I began a journey that, unknowingly, led me to choose pharmacy as my career path. Around ten days after my eleventh birthday I was diagnosed with a malignant Juvenile Granulosa Cell Tumor. Prior to receiving the diagnosis my parents and I spent many hours at our local emergency room (ER) in Eastland, Texas due to the unbearable pain I was having. Upon our first ER visit I was misdiagnosed and sent
What do you want to do with your life? It is a question that almost everyone asks high school and college students, but for many, it is a dreaded question that is difficult to answer. For me, that wasn’t the case, as ever since my sophomore year of high school, my answer has been to become a pharmacist. My passion for pharmacy stemmed out of the opportunity to shadow a pharmacist who showed me a wide variety of career possibilities within pharmacy. I was intrigued by all the options that began on the foundation of learning science, understanding medications, and caring for patients.
In 2007 I was four. I was in my last year of preschool with Mrs. Valentina in the starfish room. I was completely oblivious to the events transpiring in the world around me and couldn’t wait to start kindergarten. Meanwhile, my parents were fighting tooth and nail to keep their jobs. 3 out of every 5 people in my father’s division were fired. They worked all day and night to keep their jobs for our family. My family was new and our parents needed steady employment to send my brother and I to a good school. Luckily, my parents kept their jobs by the skin of their teeth. However, my life was forever changed.
Ten years ago I set out on a journey to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming an influential pharmacist and healthcare professional within my community, however, I was unaware of all of the challenges I would be faced in pursuit of my dreams. I began seeking work while I was enrolled in my first semester of college. During my job search, I discovered a job posting for an entry level pharmacy technician at a community retail pharmacy. After reading the job description, I knew that I was on the right track to finding a career that incorporated my love for both chemistry and biology. I began work as a pharmacy technician where I learned the ins and outs of the industry and decided to enroll in the certified pharmacy technician course that was available at my college in hopes of continuing my goal of one day becoming a pharmacist.
Through my upbringing and exposure to the healthcare profession through parents' careers, I have had the opportunity to witness their commitment and empathy towards their clients, and have grown to appreciate the work that medical professionals do. Pharmacists are ambitious and reliable people that interact and connect with their clients while providing treatment. They make personal sacrifices to ensure the wellbeing of others and I genuinely aspire to make that kind of difference in the lives of those struggling with illnesses while being in a profession that really interests me.
This spring, I will become the first person in my generation to graduate from a four year institution. Coming from a small high school class of only forty students, college has presented me with many more responsibilities, and countless opportunities. An opportunity to set an example for my four younger siblings, and also a chance to pursue a career for myself. With education being so vital, a higher education is something that I deeply valued and sought to attain. Going into college, I was certain that I wanted a career in healthcare, however I was undecided about where.
My Butler University academic training and intern experience has positioned me to recognize and appreciate the essential role performed by the clinical pharmacist. Although sometimes transparent, it is the clinical pharmacist that is central to a patient’s ultimate successful recovery. This was evident during my clinical rotations, where I directly participated in the optimization of medication therapy to achieve patient-specific outcomes; it is for this reason I am impassioned and compelled to pursue a residency. As a PGY-1 resident, I plan to apply my clinical knowledge in the acute and ambulatory care settings to identify medication-related problems and make therapeutic recommendations in collaboration with other practitioners. Upon completion

Life is a roller coaster - One of the main things that I learned in pharmacy careers is to not get discouraged if my first job is not a perfect fit. While some of the speakers were still at their first and only job as a pharmacist, others had had many careers within the field. At 31 I’ve already worked in two major fields within my professional life before pharmacy school. It was enlightening to hear thoughts and attitudes about the topic from the perspective of other with more experience. For me, it helped to reinforce the idea that it’s ok to move around a bit and find a position that is the best fit for me and my goals as a Pharmacist.

Pharmacy has always been a part of my life. My uncle is a pharmacist, and I clearly remember my cousin going through pharmacy school as I grew up. I can still remember my mother telling me about my cousin's application process, White Coat Ceremony, and graduation. It was all so interesting to me from the very beginning, and I knew that I just had to be a pharmacist. At the time, I had no idea just how much the profession would mean to me.
I visited a well community pharmacy on 02-11-2017. The well pharmacist mentor provided me with academic and professional support and facilitated my learning. During the placement, the responsible pharmacist asked me some questions to test my knowledge and understanding. This support enabled me to achieve the visit goals and to link my learning at the University to real-life practice. I observed how NHS and private prescriptions are dispensed in the pharmacy. Also, how the well pharmacy standards operating procedures(SOPs) are applied in the workplace and which member of the team performs the legal and clinical checks on the prescriptions. Furthermore, I noticed how GSL,P and POM medicines are organized and stored in the pharmacy,
I recently graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead with a chemistry degree. I became interested in the healthcare field during my senior year in high school. I had two internships with Walgreens and Yapel Orthodontist. Originally going into college, I wanted to be a pharmacist due to the amazing time I had job shadowing at Walgreens and seeing the interaction with the pharmacists caring for their patient’s needs. During my final year of college, I took anatomy, neurochemistry and finished my neuroscience minor. These classes taught me how intricate the brain and body is. By being a scribe, it will allow me to continue my learning with the healthcare field. It will also
Today in the 21st century the roles of pharmacist have expanded tremendously. Before pharmacist had the role of solely dispensing drugs. As I conducted my telephone Career interview with Pharmacist Della Agquiz, it provided me with a better picture on how to achieve this career goal. Being that I was already a pharmacy technician I didn’t think that continuing my education in pharmacy to be difficult. However, speaking with Mrs. Agquiz she informed that from the beginning in undergraduate studying chemistry through graduate school it was all challenging. She mentioned that having a personal life aside from school could be difficult to maintain due to the demanding study schedule of pharmacy. Taking into consideration all the time school requires I asked Mrs. Agquiz what her motivation was to pursue becoming a Pharmacist. Her response was very humbling, she chose the Pharmacy
The career that I am interested in pursuing is a Pharmacists. The number one reason I have decided to become a pharmacist is because I want to help and assist others. The satisfaction of me helping a patient get better quickly is the motivation that drives me. The second reason is the act of working with other health care professionals. Pharmacist have to communicate with other professionals as a team to avoid errors. Communication and connection is a major key in today’s society, in which I like with a passion. The big career dream began when my older cousin sister became the first in the family to graduate from college with a college degree. Her getting a well-paying job and taking care of my aunt and uncle led me to work hard and achieve pharmacy just like her. HCC will help me pursue my goals by helping me get high grades and achieve a high GPA. By me getting an Associates in Science I would then transfer to a big university like University of Houston to continue for higher education.
