Personal Narrative: Our Strained Financial Situation

We would like to bring to your attention our strained financial situation. The FAFSA does not accurately depict our family financial situation and the ability to contribute to Zachary’s college expenses. My husband was working as a Hospital Administrator and was encouraged to obtain his Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration. After taking out his own student loans, he graduated in 2013 and soon after was furloughed(without pay), then permanently let go. At that time, I was not working. I had a herniated disc in my back and was recovering from surgery. It took two years for David to find a permanent full time position at Evangelical Hospital, a one hour commute with a forty percent reduction in the pay he had previously. In the interim, he collected unemployment, worked as an Adjunct Instructor and Elementary school substitute teacher. We went through a significant amount of our savings. I was able to return to work March 2014. To supplement the income loss and pay his student loans, he works 3 jobs : full time at Evangelical Community hospital, part time evenings at McCann School of Business & Technology Wilkes-Barre & Hazleton as an adjunct instructor, and early mornings and weekends-as needed- at Gerries Fitness as a Spin Fitness Instructor. David was in a car accident, the car had significant body damage but not totaled. After thousands of dollars in repairs, a few days after we picked it up from the auto body shop, the transmission went. The dealership gave us $500.00 on a trade. This last fall, our heating system broke and we need a new roof. We took out home equity loan to help cover those home expenses. Between mortgage, car loan, student loan and home equity loan, our resources are limited to help our son. The money we do have in our savings is there to prepare for any other financial disaster that could come our
