As you enter the city of Toronto, enclosed by skyscrapers towering over you overflowing with culture, where time passes swiftly as people dash by you; it makes you feel trivial in the metropolitan area. The city of shadows that cast a never ending gloom, only to be broken up by the narrow gap in-between buildings. A substantial lake embedded with Silurian rocks on the edge, surrounding the downtown business district, keeping the city steadily in place. Toronto is the younger sibling of New York and Chicago, hesitant of the spotlight these other districts possess, but not shy enough to be known worldwide. A city of roads that disperse in many directions, paving the way of people’s futures and success; unknown as to where you will end up. Many
The city, Toronto in this case, presents a web of streets and geographical space that threatens to lock its citizens in a certain demarcated way of life and conduct. The four key characters in this narrative - Tuyen, Carla, Jackie, and Oku - each feel blocked in by the constrained locality that they have been born into and each attempts to escape it in his own way.: Tuyen by being an artist, Carla by being a courier; Oku by being a student and Jackie by working in a store. The first two not only attempt to escape by means of their profession using their profession to either flee the spaces and squares (by bike) or transcend it via imagination (by art) but they also adopt profession that go against societal expectations. These societal expectations were created by, and exist within the geographical space they live in. Toronto of the late 20th century had an internalized set of expectations for immigrants and its citizens. The parents of the characters succumbed to it. The protagonists, however, resolved to step out of their boundaries and most of them succeeded.
New York is a state where there are big lights and lots of people and busy streets. I live in Brooklyn, New York and I was born here and I have lived here all my life. Personally, where I live I can walk to go get groceries that I need and everything is in walking distance. I take the public subway or the bus to get to school and there are many public schools here in Brooklyn, New York. There are delis and corner stores almost around every block. Here in Brooklyn, it is very noisy and busy. I am so used to the noise that I can sleep soundly even with all the noise that surrounds my house. Personally, I think that if I were not born here or was not a New Yorker, I would plan to move here when I get older.
I have written many essays since I was in middle school yet most of my writing was not that important besides for a grade. Yet there is one piece of writing I wrote that change my life and felt that it had an important impact to The City of Chicago. My teacher during that time wanted the class to enter in a citywide competition, which is called “Do The Write Thing”. It is a way for students to voice their opinions on how to stop the violence in Chicago. I wanted to help reduce the violence in Chicago since many youths are being killed in the streets every single day. In my paper, I mainly focused on three body paragraphs. The first one was why the violence in the city was increasing. The second one was some type of violence that I have witness in my own personal life. The final paragraph
All I could fit in my only small bag was a few clothes and a toothbrush and all my parents
I spent my childhood in a small, suburban neighborhood just outside of the shadow of Minneapolis, Minnesota. My street is located in a city called Edina: a city that prides itself on “green spaces” and the protection of its environment. Whenever there are too many fires, or a bike path were to be constructed, activist groups gather and protest the damages to both the environment and the city’s image. By the time I was ten, Edina had passed ordinances restricting private citizens’ abilities to cut down living trees older than 10 years (or trees more than 12 inches in diameter one foot from the ground). The city also spent two decades cultivating a pride in our shared landscapes: lakes, forests, wetlands, and prairies. To expose students and
In May I signed a security access form that had September 2nd written as my last day.
A few weeks ago I was sitting in my old dusty chair watching the news. I was just thinking about the day’s work ahead of me, and wondering if my body will make it through the day. I heard a car door slam. I imagined that it was my wife pulling in, but that would be impossible. I wondered who it could be. I do not get many visitors this time of year, not in the off-season. Could it be the fella that was on the news? They said a girl was murdered in Iowa and the suspect got away, and may be on his way to Canada. Then a loud knock on the door filled the empty room. I got out of my chair slowly, like a pregnant woman would, and made my way to the door. I could hear a creak with every step I took, and only God knows if it came from the floor, or these knobby knees.
Toronto in 1915, was undergoing many changes from the previous century and developing into a city with a future of becoming a global phenomenon. Toronto, is known for its buildings, culture and history. However, these buildings, culture, and history did not come from nowhere. These came from the actions of the predecessors who wanted to develop Toronto into a marvel that shows its history within the walls of several buildings. The buildings that I visited, showed the history that was presented within the novel. Although, some did change in their appearance, and others in their function. I was able to understand their importance in the past and the present. At the corner of King and Bay, was the Toronto Telegram building. However, today it now
Here in Boston, I did have to be forced to do the work. I myself manage my time and that took me to do better in my work and lifestyle. I learn how to speak English in one mouth, something that surprised my sins English wasn't my first languish that I spoke. I learned how to code in several different computer languages, including HTML(Hypertext Markup Language), Python, and C++, and planning to learn another call binary code!. Being in Boston, things were much better because in the US there are laws and programs like ABCD that help support children and prevent physical abuse. Her I have the thing that I did have to support me into success. Now I have built mine own in passways to succeed, greatness in this country full of opportunity and
Few days after my 8th birthday, my family and I left our home in India and began a new life in Canada. It was not long before, I became aware of how different I was from the other children at school. Not just aesthetically but even our thoughts were different. Steadily, I became isolated and lowered my self-esteemed. At recess one day, the clear skies suddenly changed in the dark clouds with chilling wind. I was shivering in the cold, when one of girls from my class wrapped me inside of her jacket. She was smiling and at me and hugged me and said, “warm”. Soon other kids hugged us and we formed a small huddle. Although they did not know me, they understood the gestures of hugging to provide warmth. Jessica, the girl with the jacket, and
In metropolitan urban communities, plagued with economic hardships, social injustice, and violence, rising out of those communities is glorified as the greatest achievement one could earn. In fact, most of my family members and peers congratulated me for being accepted into UNC-Chapel Hill with phrases like, “you made it” and “it’s over.” But, I knew different. I was well aware that attending UNC-Chapel Hill, the first public and most prestigious university in NC would be substantially different than the conditions of my hometown. No longer was I around the likes of my melanin, socioeconomic status, or cultural background, and adjustment proved to be difficult. During my first year a UNC, I endured social isolation, homesickness, academic hardship,
My sister`s name is Eliana. We are at the same age .we both are seven year old. We are friends from our church in Toronto. She moved to Australia four years ago. We sometimes talked on the phone, sending cards, or sending gifts to each other. On June 2017, she came to Toronto to visit. My mom and I went to Toronto to visit her. My mom bought two tickets from Ontario North land. We had two suitcases. One for me and one for my mom. IN my suitcase I had my clothes, tooth brush, shoes, towels and another personal stuff. We ride on the bus. Before we arrive in Toronto, bus passed by five towns in the north of Ontario. Last stop was York dale mall in Toronto. We got off the bus and got on the train. When we were in the shopping mall I bought gifts
The pounding sound of the 8th wonder of the world is truly breathtaking, and even more unbelievable is walking behind it, or standing right beneath it. Over the last summer I went on a vacation with my younger brother Liam, my mom Erika, and dad Aaron. We went on a long car ride to Niagara Falls in Canada, then to Boston, and finally to Pennsylvania. It was the trip of a lifetime.
This summer, I went on an arduous yet amazing 4-week canoe trip through parts of Ontario and Manitoba. I was accompanied by seven other high school aged boys and one 20 year old guide. As one might imagine, I grew close with everyone on my crew throughout our month in the wilderness. In addition, a crewmember that became one of my closest friends on trail taught me why putting others in categories is never beneficial.
I’m seventeen now, it’s been three years since dally died. Me, Darry, and Soda, decided to move away after that, try and avoid the heat. I've been in Chicago for a while now and I've gotten good at city living. It’s real hard gettin money though, Darry got a job as a carpenter, and Sodapop’s just been exploring the new streets. He’s pretty popular in his new gang, we all miss the old crew and all but it was for the best that we got as far away as possible. I've dropped out of school and I mostly just stick around with soda and the gang, but right now, I’m just trying to enjoy a nice nap. “Pony. Pony get up”
