Bullying is a subject I totally take personally. There have been many occasions in which I found myself a victim of this epidemic, because that’s exactly what it is, an epidemic, a silent war, that no one seems to understand or even want to face alone, this issue that have swept under the rug all across this nation for a very long time, for far too long. The buck stops here! While reading through my Sunday morning paper over breakfast, I happened to run across a story that really tugged at my heart strings, and this is not the first story like this I’ve read. A young woman in high school here in my town kills herself because of continual bullying initiated by someone else at school. The question that runs through my mind is, why? There are
Police, teachers, principals, state senators, and many others claim it’s not bullying that causes these mind numbing numbers of suicides and school shootings. They truly believe it is mental illness, depression, anger, and PTSD that causes the overwhelming number of suicides and shootings. What they fail to comprehend is that those are side effects as a result of being bullied.
Bullying is happening all over the world and it is a huge problem. According to www.bullyingstatistics.org, victims of bullying are between 2 to 9 times more likely to commit or consider suicide. If bullying is stopped or lowered around the world, the suicide levels would drop as well. Telling about bullies can help others going through it.
What do you think of when you hear someone talk about the effects of bullying? Do you think of the victims committing suicide or you would think of Columbine, however these cases are extreme. One of the gunmen in the Columbine shootings was prescribed an antidepressant medication (“Columbine shooter was prescribed anti-depressant”). Have you ever done something wrong? Have you ever called someone a name? Well you might be considered a bully. The reason that I feel I have the right to talk about this is because I have been on both the receiving and distributing end of bullying. Bullying should not be such a big problem because bullying is not a serious problem, bullying does not lead to suicide, and kids aren’t fully developed.
In the article Big Bad Bully by Hara Estroff Marano she discusses the main components of behavior that make up a bully, who can be a bully and why people choose to bully others. In the beginning of the article she focuses on suicide victims who could no longer take the mental, physical and emotional abuse of bullying. Marano (2017), “Months later, in Cherokee County, Georgia, 15-year-old Brian Head grew tired of the same teasing and deeds. The denouement was only slightly more remarkable. He shot himself to death—in front of his classmates. He walked to the front of the classroom and pulled the trigger.” The same teasing and deeds Marano is speaking of is being tripped in the hall, various name calling and being physically bullied. The article goes into depth of how the Western society treats bullying. We are prone to often dismiss bullying as kids being kids and, teachers are in denial that any such behavior exist in their class. However, the sad truth is that more times than not there is always a classroom bully. Because we often overlook the severity of bullying choosing to close our eyes we get a harsh reality when someone commits suicide. It forces us to acknowledge the hard truth with open eyes that we have chosen to close for too long.
Bullying is the cause of many suicides and deaths (Home n. pag). In McCormack’s article, he explains how many students are bullied each day and harassed to the point where they question their own self-esteem. They are no longer
Sticks and stones do break bones but words will never hurt me, when we were little children that is what we were taught. Now more than ever that Mother Goose rhyme is irrelevant. More and more children are being bullied and they are being pushed to their edge of sanity and people do not really take this horrible epidemic seriously. According to a study, the following percentages of middle schools students had experienced these various types of bullying: name calling (44.2 %); teasing (43.3 %); spreading rumors or lies (36.3%); pushing or shoving (32.4%); hitting, slapping, or kicking (29.2%); leaving out (28.5%); threatening (27.4%) stealing belongings (27.3%); sexual comments or gestures (23.7%); e-mail or blogging (9.9%). (Facts
As a person who has personally dealt with years of harassment I am most definitely an anti-bullying activist. However, never have I felt the need to take my own life over the verbal abuse that I endured over the years, but knowing that there are far worse situations than mine, I understand why someone would do so. No one can fully understand how it feels to be mentally or physically abused unless they have dealt with it themselves. I believe that no one, under any circumstances, should ever bullied for simply being themselves, for instance, their race, skin color, sexual orientation, religion, etc. Most bullying cases take place in school, which should not come as a shocker for anyone considering adolescent suicide is literally all over
Jasmine, a 10 year old girl from North Carolina, decided to hang herself after facing bullying at school. Her parents were shocked to find her like this, and had no idea about the bullying until children in her school reported witnessing several incidents. Jasmine’s story shows that even children as young as her can be mentally harmed due to bullying, so we should put a stop to the behavior before suicide rates go up even higher. I strongly believe that bullies should be held legally responsible for their actions. Bullying falls under a legal category when it becomes intolerable, and someone facing depression is obviously unable to tolerate the bullying. Also, bullies need to learn to take responsibility for their actions, and the victims can
When i was growing up we always had new kids in school. One time we got a new kid and I never knew him. One of my friends did know him and he didn't like him. My friend explained that he had taken something from him so he said that he was a thief and was mean. Just from hearing this single story I never liked him. I kinda looked at him like he was a bully and avoided him as much as possible. My view and opinion I had on him probably would've never changed until one day he noticed my collection of baseball cards I had. He approached me and started talking about my collection and that he has the same interest in them. He came to school the next day with some cards that he wanted to give to me. This whole time I thought he was a thief and a bully
My narrative essay is about my experiences of being bullied. This essay further discusses what can be done to help prevent bullying.
The first time I saw bullying I was sitting on the jungle gym. It was mid-November, a few months after my fifth grade year had started. All of us already knew where to sit in class, how to find the bathroom, and when to go to lunch. Everyone except the new kid. He had just joined our class a few days ago after his family had moved. He stuck out like a sore thumb, seeing as he did not know our fifth grade etiquette. I watched as he wandered along the soccer field alone. He moved at a slow pace, as if he had no particular destination in mind. From my perch atop the jungle gym, I could see three other boys headed toward him. Unlike the new kid’s gait, theirs seemed determined. They stopped when they reached him and started what appeared to be a heated conversation. If I listened closely enough, I could just barely figure out what they were saying.
I can’t really believe that I actually just fought them in front of everyone in the hallway. Just imagine a fancy, nice, rich girl fighting some other rich girls. I yelled “ THAT'S IT HAILEY,EMMA,MONIL!” That got everyone’s attention everyone in the smelly , loud hallway with everyone walking around getting their things for their next class. I have long flowy blonde hair. I was looking out at the light blue ocean sparkling like my eyes in the hallway. Then i heard my brother yelling “ Please Don’t hit me Hailey’’! Then i am bility turned around and ran straight for the crowed.
Today’s News: A 13 year old student, stole the self-esteem of a young child, and made this young child commit suicide. If you think this is horrible, it get worse. Half of the children in America are bullies. Bullying is not something new, it has happened before. Bullying is a big issue if we don't stop it, it can get out of hand. Bullies should be held criminally responsible for their actions due to them making others harm themselves, not stopping no it’s harming others, and even taking bullying online. As a result, bullies should be held criminally responsible for their actions.
“ Hey stop you two! Stop fighting or else!” Mr. Miller demanded across the hall.
Did you know that over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying every year? There are even approximately 160,000 teens who skip school because of bullying. By the same token, there are bully victims between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims.
