This is a paper about the book Finding Fish: A Memoir, which was written by Antwone Fisher. By necessity given the nature of the book, the main character will be examined at length. Through careful examination of the main character a deeper understanding of the book can be reached. After the examination, a number of theoretical perspectives will be applied to the main character, as well as an explanation of how these perspectives can be used to evaluate Antwone in order to understand him better. The perspectives that will be used will be the strengths, systems, conflict, humanistic, and psychodynamic perspectives. Following the connection of the perspectives to Antwone, an explanation of why social workers use theories and
In “Consider the Lobster,” by Davide Foster Wallace, Wallace argues that preference is defined as something personal that relates to suffering. He presents the idea that preferences are not enough to make moral decisions. The author begins this essay by describing the Maine Lobster Festival and all its festivities, followed by what a lobster is and its anatomy, and concludes with whether or not they feel pain through their suffering. Wallace does this to convey the message that lobsters are living creatures who do in fact have a preference. If something feels pain, it has a preference, and this something that lobsters have. Preference varies between every living creature, and no single creature could feel the pain or know preference another feels or has. An example provided in the text is when a worm is cut in two, after they are sliced, their haves carry on; we see no sign of pain but have no idea as to whether the worm would have preferred to remain in tact, rather than in two. When it comes to lobsters however, we do study signs of preference, for example they hook their claws to the rims of a
On November 8, 1998, I was a surprise to Robin Freeman and Tony Blackwell. It was such a surprise because it was my mom’s birthday. She was celebrating with some pizza when all of a sudden, her water broke. They rushed to the hospital and a couple of hours later, Shirquita Dishae Blackwell was delivered into the world. I think it is unique my mom and I have the same birthday. I was so light in skin color they said my brother thought I was white, but my mom said it had looked like my heart was bigger than any other standing in the room with her.
Doing something new can be terrifying and freighting. The hardest thing that I’ve had trouble with is doing things in front of people. When onlookers stare at me it makes me feel awkward. The summer of two thousand and eleven, I made the volleyball team at Covington High School so, that meant this would put me in front of a lot of people. My team name was The Lady Lions. The Lady Lions and I have practiced all summer long for our first game. Unfortunately the first Monday of school was my first game. Monday’s arrival at school came fast! The game was at the end of the school day but, the more I thought about it the more nervous it was. This was a new situation for me because I’ve never been in front of a crowd that big.
The stone was cold and I could feel the pain swelling up inside. I took a step towards the edge, I thought to myself, “One more step and the worries would end…” if only it was that easy.
Here’s an explanation of my actions and the reason I am back in Kentucky. I could tell you like I tried at Red Lobster, so here it is in writing.
I never thought I would be labeled an outsider, a misfit even. As I trudged my way through the halls of my small town high school, I would endure the gazing pairs of eyes, that belonged to my peers, followed by whispering and often times some laughter. I always used zone out during those repetitive speeches and commercials about the effects of gossiping and rumors; never did I imagine that one day I would be on the receiving end of of the everyday potshot. Growing up I was always the center of attention, the one everyone yearned to be friends with, never was I the antisocial child in the corner with nowhere to turn… not until high school. They say high school changes you. They say high school accounts for some of the greatest years of
Animals as well as humans have been around for an extended period of time showing that there obviously has been some sort of interactions between them throughout the years which may not have always been all the bad. They have been here for hundreds of thousands of years. They are our main source of comfort, happiness, joy, fun, and of course: food. Without animals we would not be at the point in life where we are today. Our next best source of food besides animals would have to be plants and who wants to eat plants all the time for every meal and only that? The treatment of those animals that we use as a food source and even the ones as pets is not always positive. Lobsters, a primary food source for the wealthy, are treated very poorly, for
Any object can be the topic for discussion, as long as it is relevant to the current reality of today’s society. In 2005, David Foster Wallace published, “Consider The Lobster,” in Gourmet magazine. In this piece Wallace provides evidence that lobster is more than just a posh crustacean enjoyed by the rich and famous, but instead an example for an aspect of American society today that is commonly overlooked. Throughout this article, Wallace uses his clever sense of humor, extensive footnotes, and powerful rhetorical questions to relay the idea that ignorance is an essential theme in American society that complicates more facets of our lives, than we care to believe.
In the essay, Consider the Lobster, by David Foster Wallace, a point about morality with regards to animal abuse is brought up. Much like minorities in America, lobsters are considered to be the lowest tier of the animal society. The main point about the essay is to alert people about the issues of torturing animals just for the sake of our humanistic pleasure. What is socially acceptable as normal behavior is not always the most ethical or moral behavior. At the beginning of the essay the author describes an annual tradition in Maine, the Lobster Festival.
Imagine going on spring break and going to the beach and anything else you want to do but with no crowds of people trying to do the same thing your doing. This is exactly what Jekyll Island is. The Island is in southern georgia only about thirty minutes from Florida. There are many things to do on Jekyll for everybody whether you like to go to the beach, go bike riding, or go golfing there, there is something for everybody to do there but without the crowd. I have been there twice now and I can say I will be going back.
In the short story ‘’Shells’’,written by Cynthia Rylant,a boy named Michael had lost his parents and his aunt esther stepped in to take care of him.It has been 6 months and since then they have been arguing all the time. But further on in the story it shows how just a few hermit crabs can bring them closer together and this is because relationships inprove when people find things in common.
Not too long ago in brazil South American, 1999, I grasp the leaf right before drowning in the river, as I catch my breath and looked back and saw all my family dragged down to the river to their death. I sit here on this wet leaf floating down the river. Waiting for my death as well, I’m going tell you a story how me and my soldier ants, in three days we fought our life out there with leiningen and his pathetic plantation.
I was woken by the moonlight I ran out of my bedroom looking around wondering what time it was. As I shifted out of the bedroom I ran toward my desk to finish my research on the last two Pangolin on the planet earth. I turned on my light to see two scaley balls rock back and forth in their large primal like habitat. I lefted up on of the scalely ball in both if my hand, after place the ball on my desk in unrolled and looked right up into the desk light. The brown scales in the pangolin was shiny like the sun beaming on a oak tree. I study the pangolin’s nails and see how how sharp and slender they were. The nails were conceived were covered in dung I cleaned of the pangolin after cleaning its nail the loung snouted knight wonder
"Giant Snail" by Elizabeth Bishop is included in this collection because it displays the theme of nature by describing the physical characteristics of a snail and its surroundings. While this poem is similar to all of the poems in this collection because it focuses on the natural world, it specifically relates to Elizabeth Bishop's "Giant Toad" and "Strayed Crab" since they all take place in the same setting at the same time. I was particularly intrigued by this poem due to the fact that the snail is the narrator and the storyline follows his struggles as he tries to reach a rock by dawn. In fact, this poem is particularly appealing due to its unique perspective and striking details. When the exhausted speaker states, "My body is like a decomposing
