This year has been a contentious year for WV legislators and teachers. For teachers, we have been fighting to keep our health insurance costs down, are pay up, and seniority intact. Legislators have been dealing with the heat from our fire and trying to give us what we need to put that fire out. To deal with my eternal fire, I posted to Facebook saying, "I will never claim to understand politics as I would hope most politicians wouldn't claim to understand teaching. I think we need to fix this. Maybe we need to walk a day in each other's shoes. I don't mean spend an hour walking around. I mean a day, maybe even two." I went on to explain the life of a teacher and decided that a Facebook post seen by my friends wasn't enough. I decided to put my money where my mouth was. I created a paper invitation and a small note then mailed one to every member of the Senate, House of Delegates, and to the Governor's office. In this …show more content…
Following the hearing we walked to her office. Here I learned that she doesn't have a secretary to answer her phone, screen her mail, or check her email. I learned she often has to do her own research on a bill and sift through emails and mail about the topic. She has to try to return all of her phone calls and her emails. All of this is done while lobbyists, legislators, and staffers are asking for her time. After about an hour, we went to the House session in which they passed HB 2655, HB2662, HP 4162, and a few others. Ms. Graves is striving for a 100% voting record, so she had to dash to the Pro-Life Rally to speak in between votes on various bills. After the session, we grabbed a quick bite to eat and then were off to committee meetings. Following those meetings my day with her ended but hers wasn't quite finished. She had two banquets to attend that
I decided to release some stress, and go meet new people from other schools. Throughout this process I learned a lot about what other states were dealing with and what students wanted out of their education systems. I had knowledge about what the North Carolina education system was going though, but I had no clue as to the depth of problems that other states were dealing with. At this point, I decided to stand up for all the students in all states and address ten thousand people during my national beta club campaign speech for secretary. As Nobel Peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai said, “I raise up my voice-not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard”. I wanted to advocate for opportunities that all students in this country should have access to. I used my national campaign speech to talk about the issues, concerns, and dreams of other students throughout the United States and wanted to project all of the voices that I had listed to throughout this journey. I used my voice to advocate for others who did not have the opportunity and I am now National Beta Club Secretary. In my role as National Secretary, I will plan, operate, and preside at not only there North Carolina Conventions, but also at the
It takes more than words and ideas to put lasting positive change in place, it takes action. Throughout the summer, I kept in contact with the school's administration, and before the first week of school was over, a back to school dance was scheduled. Even though scheduling, and setting up the dance required a lot of work, I was proud that I could do something that everyone in the school could enjoy. As of today the reforms I made to the student council are in full swing. The year is not half over a year, and there has already been twice as many events as in previous full years. Not only that, but things that were unthinkable in the past, such as free admission for most students, have been achieved. Now we come to the most important lesson I think I have ever learned. That real change is possible. Not only in a school setting, but in our homes, and our government. Togethar, through our combined efforts and abilities, we can come together and change our society for the better. The forces of stasis and ossification may seem eternal, but all it takes is one moment where everyone comes together for us to achieve postive and worthwhile
The other day, I tried to share an article, on a social justice issue, with my close friend [white, cisgendered female], but before I could start reading, she responded with “Ugh, don’t read that. I’m not in the mood for anything depressing,” all the while rolling her eyes.
me, since at every opportunity I upheld my convictions. Thus, I discovered the potency of
I quickly swallowed my homemade authentic Indian food leftovers and gulped down my chocolate milk. Looking down at my watch that read 11:28am, I knew that I only had two minutes until my most favorite part of the day: recess. This particular day in 5th grade, I had run a lap around the playground before getting the rest of recess to myself. As I started walking for my warmup, another student ran up and said, “My parents said that your people caused 9/11.” Completely caught off guard, I held back the tears in my eyes and tried to shake off his comment. I had never encountered something like this.
On March 10, 2017, I boarded a plane bound for San Francisco amid the hustle and bustle of spring break travel traffic. However, this was no regular spring break vacation, filled with relaxation and carefree experiences. In fact, I was only going to be the Golden City for thirty-six hours, and I was on my way to the national conference being held by the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs. As one of their two national scholarship recipients for the 2016-2017 school year, I was invited to attend the conference in order to publically accept my scholarship and was encouraged to attend any panels I wished. As suggested by the name of the organization, the conference was centered on community college education programs and teaching in general. When I arrived on Friday, the only event being held was a networking reception, where I met individuals from various community colleges around the nation. However, Saturday was a much more eventful day, with my spending eight hours at the conference.
I was ready. This was how we were going to start off the season. Everyone was ready, thinking this was it. We wanted to be the best team on the ice. The coaches came into the room saying, “Let’s go, boys. Let’s start the season off on fire . . . big win today!”
The most important game of the year was coming up and I was ready. Everything was going perfect for me, because I was the starting QB as a freshmen at Englert High School. We were playing Joston High School the number 1 team in the nation since 1960, it was going to be a tough game because they had the number 1 ranked defense, but we had the best offense. The day before the game was just a normal day I went to school and had football practice after school. A couple weeks ago one of the other teams that we had played earlier in the year wanted another game so we decided to play them. They had been the hardest team we had played all year, we had only beat them by a last efforts field goal it hardly went in as it bounced in off the crossbar.
I have been a leading member of several clubs and teams throughout high school. At my previous high school, Casady, I was a leading member of the Multicultural Club. I presented the festivals and traditions of several cultures to my entire high school bimonthly, and organized bake sales and activities with the goal of increasing cultural awareness. I was also an avid debater at Casady, where debate was an offered class. However, policy debate was the only style of debate that students could learn about. In my freshman year, I was a policy debater, and I did very well in state competitions and at national tournaments, but I enjoyed the philosophical arguments much more than the political ones found commonly in policy debates. Therefore, I started a Lincoln-Douglas Debate team, which focused on philosophy throughout the eras. I
Confessing one 's political identity in 2016 truly embodies the phrase “walking on eggshells”. Whether you’re a liberal or conservative, owning up to your political resolutions sometimes comes with some intense backlash. In this years’ presidential election we have an intense candidate with very radical views, and if you don 't know who I’m talking about you should probably move from the rock you are living under. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has gained a immense popularity amongst not only the American public but Internationally as well. His chauvinist rhetoric, egotistical outlook, and how he continuously fabricates lies upon lies has truly brought him into the public eye. Hearing Trumps incredibly horrifying agenda makes me proud to admit that I am a Democrat, a solid liberal to be exact. As a solid liberal I believe in the power of the people and that means all people.Whether you are rich, poor, black, white, gay, or straight building and creating a nation that caters to people inherently means doing right by the economy and when we do well for the economy we do well for everyone.
I go to the woods to calm down ,take a break from the drama. My dad used to take me to this special spot where these rocks split and you can stem to the top of them and sit down. For some reason the view and the feel is so peaceful. There's a dip in the rock perfect size for my body. I'll kick back and look up at the sky and sometimes, it’s rare though i’ll listen to music and sometimes fall asleep and when I wake up i'm refreshed and calm. Sometimes i'll stay there after i'm calm and just chill and sometimes if a friend comes over well sometimes go over there and we'll play around on the rocks and talk and after a little bit of hanging out we will go back inside and play my PS4 for a little bit and after the gaming we are still bored we
An experience that has influenced my work and academic goals has been my family. My wife and I have one son, who departed for college this past weekend. His departure was a very emotional event for us because we did just about everything together (hockey, trips, etc). Four years ago, we brought in four siblings under foster care, which is the main topic for this essay. Four years ago, my wife and I were hoping to adopt one child and we were hoping to find a girl that needed what is commonly called a “forever home”. This process was extremely difficult as the system is not easy to navigate (I could be more blunt with this description but I won’t here). After many trials and tribulations with the foster/adoption system in Alaska, I had resigned
I am interested in the political process and daily happening that make and effect change, I persevere through challenges both personal and academic, and most importantly I am willing to do the hard work necessary to make the group successful. This aspect is the most important is because a congress has to work as a group to accomplish the goal, and most people are not willing to work for the group goal in a congress setting which is basically what is happening now.
The church I am serving has a kind of conflict. It has been for a while. The kind of division has never been solved. There looks like two different groups that are separated, and they do not like each other. They seem to harm each other and people in the both group are hurt becaue of the situation. I notice that some people try to harm other people by action and words and some people harm other people without notice and intention. In both ways, they are hurt a lot and their conflict keep remaining because of the scars from hurt. As Reuben Job says, “giving up favorite position” or “disarm,” (26) people should disarm not to harm any more since they seem to happen to harm other people automatically without power to control. There are sometimes
This is the story of two brothers’ named Evan and Ethan. Evan and Ethan were twin brothers but with a different personality of course. Evan was the twin that would always get straight A’s, was good in sports, and had a gigantic group of friends. Ethan on the other side was not good at sports at all, he was a B student, and he only had three friends. The reason why Evan wouldn’t hang out with Ethan in school is because Evans friends do not like Ethan. Evans friends think Ethan is weird and anti-social.
