Throughout my life, I have often felt that I did not belong to any particular community. I have attended schools in both Silt and New Castle, and played on their soccer teams, all while living out in the county. Much of my time has been spent in Glenwood Springs, and many of the programs I am involved in have taken me all over the Valley. When I was young, I did not understand what a treasure this community is. Each individual town plays such a unique and important role to craft our community as a unified unit formed of smaller independent parts. As a preadolescent, I could hardly grasp the beautiful harmony that I existed in. When you help low-income parents get an education in Glenwood Springs. Wo/Men in Transition also enabled people to …show more content…
My involvement with Colorado Mountain College encompasses much of my service. Naturally, I started volunteering with Wo/Men in Transition when my mother became a beneficiary of the program. My involvement included minor tasks like arranging donations in storage, helping set up and run yard sales to raise money, and making phone calls to reach out to women who had attended the Go To Workshops and did not speak English proficiently. Eventually, I worked my way to helping organize a Christmas party for the children whose parents were graduating from the program. Dressing up in an elf costume and reading stories to kids after baking gingerbread cookies for them was so rewarding that I did it for two years. I feel that community service is not just about the volunteer or even the people who benefit from it, but the ripple effect that follows. My favorite activity was delivering Christmas presents to the families we worked with. I enjoyed knowing that the presents had come from more people who cared about these families and that the children who received them would have a good Christmas with plenty of presents under the tree. There were several other events, including Rural Philanthropy Days at the CMC Rifle Campus when I helped sort through waste and
I have been a part of different activities for my community service. I have helped the TLC preschool afterschool with cleaning tables and toys once all the children have gone home. I have also been to the shelly baird school where they disabled kids go for schooling and helped out there with the students doing their work and played games .I am currently in “Dude Be Nice Club” and recently we participated in project night night where we would gather donated security blankets a book or stuffed animal and deliver them to children who have very little in homeless shelters. My community service in this case helped me realize that there are people out there who need some encouragement to help them get back on their feet and realize in life that
Becoming involved in my community has been one of the greatest experiences in my high school years. The leadership qualities and memories I’ve made from volunteering built my character for the future. I will always feel the need to give back to my community.
My community involvement began as a Watermelon Princess candidate when I was in elementary school. Since then I have become involved in many different activities. I am in 4-H and we have done several contributions to the community. Every year the Freetown Leprechauns 4-H club makes Christmas ornaments for the nursing home. We go caroling at Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown and give each patient an ornament. I absolutely love doing this every year. The elderly people love to hear us sing and their faces light up every time. They even request songs for us to sing sometimes. The Freetown Leprechauns have also taken up canned goods for the
The acts of community service I have participated in FBLA has taught and strengthen my belief that charity is the most important gestures any person can due to have a beneficial impact in the world; is to help a person in need. For instances, our organization has collected Christmas gifts for underprivileged children in the Henry County community each year and the act of giving a child without access to toys for the holidays something as simple as a toy car has brought the greatest
In the course of my time at Union County College, I was able to participate in measures that aided my community and those in need. I took part in the donation and creation of care bags which were donated to the Salvation Army. This initiative was made by AESNJ as part of their statewide drive to help those who lack the resources needed to obtain day to day necessities such as hygienic supplies, socks, tissues and other essentials. Additionally, I made a financial contribution which went towards aiding Syrian children. Helping individuals in need encouraged me to participate in Strides against Breast Cancer a walkathon which generated money for women whose lives were impacted by cancer. The financial donations assisted women who were unable
For my community service, I have been going to Lyndon B. Johnson Head Start Program, or LBJ. At LBJ, it is my responsibility to look after children and clean up after them. The teachers there set up many activities for the kids to work on, most of the time they finger paint. The teachers also set up small field trips. For example, we once went on a field trip to a house that had set up a pumpkin patch and many other activities for the kids. The house we went to wasn’t very far from LBJ. The children had so much fun choosing a pumpkin and playing different games, and I had fun helping them and taking care of them.
My most defining community service activity is my volunteer work at Kaiser Permanente. One time when I was escorting a disabled patient to the pharmacy, I chose to stay past my shift and take a detour to the cafeteria to help her purchase lunch as she did not have spare time throughout the day to eat. Being the only two people in the cafeteria, I wheeled her around, assisting her in ordering her food and carrying her meal. As she graciously thanked me for being patient with her, the expression on her face showed genuine appreciation for my action which filled me with satisfaction from my selfless deeds.
Community service has been part of my high school experience from the start of my junior year. Helping people had always been my passion. Although I was constantly assisting my peers with minor situations in school it wasn't until later that I had my very first eye opener on what I can truly accomplish. Chick-fil-a Leadership Academy helped me recognize how big of an impact I have on the community by giving me life lessons. When I pondered about community service before Chick-fil-a Leadership Academy it revolved around my local community, however after the completion of the Kick-Off Ceremony my point of view of the community included every person that I could help even if they are half way around the world. During the Kick-Off Ceremony I was able to assist packing over 1 million meals for children in need with the continuous effort of other members. This resulted in the realization that food is something thousands of people take for granted.
I have been very involved with serving my community throughout my life, and more so in the past few years because of my experience in the International Baccalaureate program and its service requirements.
Serving my community and giving back to others has always been a huge part of my life. From a young age, my parents instilled in me a love of helping those around me and a want to make my community a better place. One of the biggest areas of community service I have been a part of is at my local church and through my high school’s mini cheer camp.
A community service where I continually volunteer my time is the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Homework Club. I have been a part of the club for three years with the Holy Family Catholic Elementary School as a Mentor. The Homework Club is a after-school mentoring program offered to boys and girls in grades 3 to 8 who require academic, social and emotional support, and would benefit from one-to-one homework mentoring with a high school student volunteer. The Homework Club meets for one hour every week after school. Currently, I have volunteered around 80 hours with this program.
On my journey to Eagle Scout, I assisted my fellow scouts in many construction and environmental community projects. Together we cleared areas of the Mississippi Sandhill Crane Refuge, built a greenhouse for an elementary school, and an outdoor sanctuary for a local church. As well, I have participated every year in the annual Coastal Cleanup. For my own Eagle Project I lead a group of scout and adult volunteers to paint the exterior fascia, walls, and railings of my own church. I also volunteer at my church by helping with the younger children. I would say that community service has shaped the person I have become and has helped me grow in more ways than one.
For my Service Learning project I volunteered at Larsa Banquet Hall as a server for a youth group dinner production. I refilled water pitchers, collected dirty plates and helped clean. I also volunteered for the Turlock High School play and was given the job of box office manager. I gave up my lunch period for three weeks to go sit in the PA building and sell tickets. I then had to go to all eight shows an hour early to sell tickets before house opens and stay and help sell concessions, and then after the show was over I would have to help clean up. I like to believe that both the events I volunteered for helped benefit the community by providing entertainment. They both made people laugh and whenever people left either event, they all had a smile on their face. Almost everyone I talked to after the play told me how good the cast did and asked when the next production would be. It was satisfying knowing that I had a part in these people’s happiness, even though it was a very small part.
The community service that had impacted me the most was my experience volunteering at the DuBois Nursing Home. Though my time was there was limited , I learned a lot and experienced a different side of life I hadn't really been exposed to before. The nursing home taught me to be patient and empathetic. My duties consisted of safely transporting the residents from their rooms to various places throughout the nursing home. I learned their names even though most of them would not remember mine when I would see them later the same day. Many of the residents were pleasant and would talk to me throughout the day however, some of the other residents were not as personable. The disagreeable residents were generally ill-mannered due to their physical
You see Jackie trusted that no matter what I did (big head) ―I would come home to her. This trust would become a trait I'd desire and exhibit throughout the rest of my journey. My regret is that the lack of understanding of how to properly use this trust cost me, Jackie. As I eventually tried a relationship with an upper classmate. By the time I realized the importance of that trust trait to my growth in manhood, life had moved forward — Masculine Vulnerabilities.
