Low self-esteem can and will negatively affect almost every aspect of your life, including relationships, job, education and your health. You can, however, take steps to improve your self-esteem by taking cues from types of mental health counseling. Based on cognitive behavioral therapy consider taking these steps: 1. Identify disturbing conditions or situations Think about the conditions or situations that seem to undervalue your self-esteem. Some common triggers might be as follows: • A school presentation • A crisis at school or home • A challenge with a family member, friend or association at school 2. Be aware of your thoughts and opinions Once you have identified troubling situations, pay close attention to your thought patterns surrounding these issues. This includes your self-talk — what you tell yourself — and your analysis of what the situation means to you. Your thoughts might be positive, negative or neutral. They might be rational, based on reason, facts, or based on false conceptions. 3. Challenge your negative thinking Your original thoughts may not be the only feasible way to view a situation, so test the correctness of your thoughts. Ask yourself whether your interpretation is consistent with facts and logic or whether another explanation to the situation might be conceivable. Be conscious that it may be difficult to recognize flaws in thinking. Long-held judgments and beliefs might feel normal to you, even though many are subjective opinions or
