What is an abortion? An abortion is a term that refers to terminating a pregnancy by removing the fetus or embryo before its ready for birth. There are two types of abortions; we have a spontaneous and purposeful abortion. A spontaneous abortion is often known as a miscarriage while a purposeful abortion is induced.
Abortion is often categorized into major points such as legal issues, human rights, and religion. However many choices are based on empirical or moral ones. This brings us to “pro-choice” or “pro-life”. As a woman I used to identify myself as pro-choice even with a catholic background. I had no complications during my pregnancy or labor and gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby boy. In 2011 we tried for another baby, however it wasn’t so easy. I started to have complications and was even diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Polycystic ovary syndrome is a health problem that can affect a woman’s menstrual cycle and ability to have children.
When I was diagnosed with PCOS all I kept thinking about was the abortion that I had and how I had blew my chances at having any more children. Even though the abortion didn’t affect me right away it came back to haunt me both emotionally and physically. That is when I had changed my view on abortions. Growing up in a catholic family and becoming more involved over the years, who are we to choose to end a life that was created for a purpose. Ending an innocent life for your selfish needs is just crucial and I had to learn that lesson the hard way. I used this chart because it shows the percentage of why woman chose to have abortions. In conclusion I find this topic to be the Symbolic Interaction Theory. The reason I chose this theory is because everyone has different values and beliefs. While I may think that abortion is a crime to others it may be a life saver. In the end we are each going to make the choice that we think is the correct one and if it was the wrong choice we will learn on our own just as I did. I am pleased to say that after 4 years and one miscarriage I was able to have another child who was born in January of
