Leadership Philosophy by SFC Avila, Jose G. USAR Leadership begins with one’s own morals, values and life experiences. It is not only about knowing how to lead Soldiers, but also about capitalizing on each Soldiers personal strengths. As Army leaders, we must lead and influence others by example and, because of this, it is important to live by the Army’s values. We, however should also apply our own values and life experiences to guide Soldiers not only in their quest of becoming excellent Army leaders, but also productive members of the civilian world. The Army gives us a guide and its own definition of Army Values with LDRSHIP. This will help us understand the areas in which we can assist them in becoming a proficient Soldier. 2) Communication a. Clearly defining expectations is of paramount importance. One method that can be used is counseling Soldiers as this gives leaders the opportunity, not only to communicate your expectations, but also to know each Soldier as an individual. Communicating with all Soldiers gives them the opportunity to participate and prepare for what’s to come. A well informed Soldier will be able to prepare themselves physically and mentally to perform their duties to the best of their abilities. 3) Teamwork a. Army leaders always work as a team with their Soldiers. No single person is more important than the other. Leaders must instill in Soldiers that each individual task, whether it be small or large, will contribute an essential component toward accomplishing a greater mission. Furthermore, leaders must lead by example, and at times, it means that one must take a hands- on approach when a task is not being performed to standard. A good leader in the United States Army is made-up of several different essential characteristics. As soon to become leaders in our profession, is our individual responsibility to know, understand and apply these characteristics in the way we conduct ourselves every day. Because we are the role models for soldiers to follow not only in our job but also in our personal life. Stewardship of the Army profession in one of these mayor characteristics of a good leader in our career. Being a steward of the profession, focuses in three mayor traits: character, competence and commitment.
Army Values: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage – seven values that must remain constant.
In the United States Army we are taught to live by the Seven Army Values. They are broken down to us in the acronym ‘LDRSHIP’ which is short for Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage. We are all taught these 7 Army values repeatedly from day one in the United States Army. First we memorize these values. Then we are trained to live by them. All of these 7 values coincide with each other, and play an important roll in our Army lives. These 7 Army Values also play well into life outside the Army in our personal life. The past few months that I have spent in the JROTC program have instilled multiple army values in me through my experiences and allowed me to grow as a person. Several of the army values are as follows: loyalty, duty, respect, honor, integrity, and personal courage.
Army leaders must balance the link between the Army’s culture and it’s climate and institutional practices. When there is a proper balance it has a huge impact on the mindset of the Army’s Soldiers. Their actions or inactions impacts the five key attributes of the profession, and the four fields of expertise, and have long term effects on the Army’s culture and climate. These actions influence Soldiers’ perceptions that they are serving professional who have answered the call of service to the republic, it is important that Soldiers understand that their role is a calling and not just a job.
Every organization, both large and small, will typically have a well-defined set of values that they wish to espouse. This is the template for a successful, trained work force. These values will guide individuals during the decision-making processes that they will encounter. This blue print helps to ensure the integrity of the company and the individual, as well. Our Army today is no different. We can find our values and creeds everywhere we turn. Like doctors and lawyers, “the military is an expert group, charged by its client to conduct work governed by a professional ethic” according to Lieutenant General Robert Caslen. A recent study commissioned by the Army found that 93% of Soldiers share their personal with the one set by the Army. Again, according to Caslen “the Army Values have sustained our institution through some of our most difficult years and will continue to be the foundation of our profession.”
The Total Soldier uses the army Values in both his army career and also when he is not at work recognizing that he is always an ambassador for the army and the military as a whole to the civilian population.
