Before going into my reflective essay, it is important to first know what is reflective learning and journal writing. Reflective learning is the system of internally analysing and exploring a problem of concern, triggered by an experience, which creates and clarifies meaning in terms of self, and which ends up in a modified conceptual angle (Boyd and Fales, 1983). Journal writing on the other hand, is the recording of each day events, personal reflections, questions about the environment, and reactions to experiences (Dyment and O’Connell, 2003). According to Kerka (1996), journal writing is considered to be vital factor of expertise processing and that it enables the learners to “articulate connections between new information and what they already recognise”. Reflection is an important human activity in which people recapture their experience, think about it, mull it over and evaluate it. It is this working with experience that is important in gaining knowledge of (Boud, Keogh and Walker, 1985). To help structure my writing, I will be using the Gibbs (1988) model of reflection. This model supports “reflection on action”, allowing me to think retrospectively and systematically analyse each phase of the experience. Throughout the last 20 weeks, there are many things that I have taken into consideration from the lessons taught by David and Christina. However, I will only highlight on the classes that impacted me the most, my past internship experience, as well as the video assignment. I still remember during the first day of Work Experience class, David and Christina introduced themselves and given the class a heads up on the assessments that we are expected to deliver before the semester ends. Taylors University Lakeside Campus students from Malaysia are given a completely different task as compared to the rest of the students for one of the assessment. Taylors students are expected to film a video to attract other students studying in Malaysia to continue their studies at UWE and why they should choose Bristol and UWE. At that time, David and Christina are unable to confirm the assessment criteria as the criteria may be different this year for the Taylors students. However, I was really excited because I
I will structure this essay using Gibbs Model of Reflection (Gibbs 1988). Reflective learning helps practitioners analyse their experiences and how they think and feel about them before
On 08/20/2017 at 1002 hours FTO Wheeler #4361 and I responded to St. Luke’s Hospital emergency room entrance, on 3555 Cesar Chavez St., regarding a women in a hospital gown trying to break the caller’s vehicle window with a brick. Officer Wheeler and I were in full police uniform driving a marked patrol unit when we responded.

This reflection learning log and essay guide is a helpful learning tool for you to access when you are completing your learning log and also your reflection essay. It provides you with an introduction to the purpose for setting a reflective piece of work and the benefits this produces for you. It provides activities to help you along the way (see separate guide “ACCG 399 Developing a Reflective Capacity Guidance”) and clearly sets out the requirements that are expected of you, including what you will need to hand in at the end of the semester.
Effective reflection helps the practitioner to see the situation from an outsider's perspective, so that they can develop a better way to respond to a similar scenario in the future. Reflection is meant to achieve a change in practice, rather than simply repeating the same mistakes (Schon, 1983). Many different models exist for structuring the reflective process. Regardless of the framework used, the reflection models are meant to accomplish three things. They are supposed to promote reflecting on events, self-evaluation and analysis, and a plan to change actions in the future. This Reflective essay will utilize Driscoll's 'The What?' model as its structure (Driscoll, 1994). This model has three components"
The term “reflection” directly refers to one’s own ability for serious thought or consideration regarding events, which have occurred in the past. Professional bodies and organisations utilise reflective practice within continuous professional development as an effective tool to evoke critical thoughts regarding their own actions. This analysis of one’s own
Reflection at its most basic principle "provides us with an opportunity to review our decisions and decision-making processes" however, in practice, reflection is a far broader and contextual concept, it is about understanding a person’s life and the actions they have taken throughout their lives. (Nussbaum 1997).Reflective practice first emerged from the work of a man called Donald Schon, having found that there appeared to be a gap between theory and putting it into practice (Fook 2006a: 441). He went on to state that reflective practice is a way of improving professional practice, through critically evaluating how we respond to practice situations and being self-aware (Mezirow 1991). Whereas reflection is applicable in all aspects of living (Fook 2006a).
This reflection will discuss personal diffidence and how it has influenced my academic studies, including my practice within placement settings. Gibbs reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1998) has been utilised as it illustrates a clear structure for the process of reflection. To conclude this reflection will draw together the themes which have emerged and highlight a clear action for future learning that will be used in order to enhance my future practice.
There has been an increasingly large amount of interest around the areas of reflective practice and critical reflection. This interest has led to an increasing amount of literature around reflective practice and critical reflection.
The idea of reflective practice in an academic context however is new to me, and I did feel lost at first. Now I can see how reflecting on my own learning and experiences has helped me to see where I have improved week on week and I think that as a result, my confidence has improved and I am able to contribute more in class, I have more confidence in my ability to teach and I feel that as a result I am learning more. The process or reflection, evaluation and adaptation is truly a cyclic one.
In my reflective essay, I am going to use Borton’s (1970) Model of Reflection. I choose this module to reflect due to the fact that it is simple yet pragmatic. It helps me to reflect using only three questions: What happened? So what did I learn? and Now what should I do in the future? (Jasper,2003). There are three main reflections in this essay. For each reflection, I will first describe the situation, my feelings and what my team mates and I did in the situation. I will then analyse each situation in order to learn from the experience. Finally, I will talk about my future action plan based on the analysis of my experience.
Reflection is the purpose of this assignment and according to Bolton (2010) it is a detailed thought of events of what one encountered and it includes what they experienced, their feelings at the time and the people involved in it, thru this it means one is re-experiencing the event and replaying it from different perspectives. Similarly, Johns (1995) summarises that reflection allows one to comprehend and learn through their experiences and it is a personal process that frequently results in some change for oneself
Schon (1983), identifies two types of reflection; reflection-on-action (after-the-event thinking) and reflection-in-action (thinking while doing). This clearly distinguishes that reflection can occur whilst the action is carried out as it can still benefit the situation rather than reflecting on how things will be done differently for next time. This tool can be effective as it will allow the professional to assess
The writing I did this semester for Engl 110c has meant alot to me because I was able to pick a topic that has such a huge impact in my life. I was able to do the topic about Navy Wives, which has a huge impact on me. I recently became a navy wife a year ago and my life has changed drastically. I was able to share everything I wanted to about the life of a military wife through my writings, as well as share to my classmates about my topic. I really enjoyed creating my ePortfolio because I could come out of my shell and be me. I made a ePortfolio website that would be for military wives to read. I believe this website would be perfect for any military wife reading it. I was able to give tips and information on what it’s like to be a military wife, how to prepare for deployments and how to stay strong being a military wife.
The aim of the reflective essay is to highlight my own personal development skills that I have developed during first semester of my module. However, in this report I will make sure my learning ability phase and what this module has allowed me to work and understand in improving my personal skills and purpose. My major aim is to develop and assess an in depth range of my personal traits as a student in order to endorse my future development plan.
