Personal Reflection

This reflection will discuss personal diffidence and how it has influenced my academic studies, including my practice within placement settings. Gibbs reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1998) has been utilised as it illustrates a clear structure for the process of reflection. To conclude this reflection will draw together the themes which have emerged and highlight a clear action for future learning that will be used in order to enhance my future practice.

As I started to improve, I felt that imagery and increase arousal was having a large positive impact on my performance. Therefore, it led me to have more motivation to keep having the imagery sessions. However, this time I wanted to try imagery from an external perspective, where I visualize myself from the perspective of someone else. It makes it easier to see the technique and the form of weightlifting. Like the previous sessions, I wanted to psych myself up and be cognitive specific by imaging the certain motor skills to get a feel for the movement. In my mind, I pictured myself as an outsider who is watching someone bench press. From my perspective, I could see the person’s overall form and body movement as they lifted the barbell up

This course enhances my understanding about bereavement’s theory and counselling skills working with bereaved people. Before I took this course, I thought bereavement only about death of a person. In fact, bereavement can also imply losses such as employment losses and leaving home. Also, changes can be a bereavement too as it is always come with gain and loss. Since one of the course aim is develop skills in counselling with bereaved people, I was nervous before attending to class because I don’t have anyone close to me is deceased. I was afraid that I am not able to work with bereaved people if I don’t have this experience. Now I know that bereavement is a type of loss and I have experience of loss. It facilitates the learning process because I can apply theory to myself and the cases we work on class. This course draws on theories from multiple aspect to discuss about bereavement, grief and mourning. Culture differences surely play a big role in those. As we learned about death in different culture, it is important to learn and respect all culture differences and understand and meet their needs. The film bereavement from a Muslim perspective, Muslim believe that the soul of a decreased person is still present around the person. Therefore, Muslim wants to stay with the decreased person so he/she doesn’t feel lonely. This behavior may not seem normal in other culture. Learning and listening to different culture differences such as emotion, role of mourners and belief system can avoid making assumption of our own culture to the bereaved people, otherwise misunderstandings can create a gap between the counsellor and the bereaved people and possibly lead to conflict too. Also, individual often carry different religion and spirituality. At first, I failed to see the significant of religion in counselling with bereaved people. As I am an atheist myself, learning other religions make me empathize other’s feeling. In class, we worked on a case about a grandmother believe her grandson is in hell. For the course of my break I was let down a little by some companies I wanted to volunteer with. Instead I helped my family because of the position I was in during the holidays. Even though I didn’t help a wide scale of people in a community; I helped my family members. Even the smallest deeds I did for example, making sure my grandmother buys healthier foods and accompanying my dad to places to do errands made them happy. I made them happy regardless of me not being there for them throughout the year. I didn’t volunteer for the break, but I did give gifts. In Quarter 4, I wrote literary analysis, one hundred word sentence, a canterbury tale, division and classification paper, and research paper. For the literary analysis, though I was familiar with the style from previous high school english classes, I struggled with the paper. I found myself frustrated with the time limit as with more time, I feel I could have done a better job. However, considering the time limit, I am pleased with the amount of detail and support I was able to put into the paper. The literary analysis met my standards as it was the best of ability given the time restriction, and it was satisfying to know I could complete an entire analysis in an hour and a half. One hundred word sentence was completely new to me as I had never attempted something like this before. While it was frustrating at times figuring out how to add more detail in the same sentence, I greatly enjoyed the assignment. I liked being able to make a story as well as improving my grammar skills. In the end, the one hundred word sentence was extremely satisfying to complete and meet my standards as it was grammatically correct while still being interesting. Unlike the one hundred word sentence, the canterbury tale was extremely frustrating for me as I struggled to get the lines to rhyme while having enough syllables and flow well. There is a quote from Claxton (1998), ‘If the roast potatoes are slow to brown, you can turn up the oven. But if you try to speed up the baking of meringues, they burn… The mind, too, works at different speeds.’ It stimulated the idea of the individualism of learning and thought, and how every person has a unique learning identity and approach.

Today has been a very hectic day in which, I totaled my car. I began talking about this very true statement because there are many ups and downs to life no matter how much you prepare there is endless possibilities for things to not go as planned. Therefore, I understand why you would want some individuals to track their expenses for a little over a month and then go back and review the information. First, I chose to track my credit card expenses by my bank statement, of course, I remembered to write down each item because in your bank statement it does not disclose the item description. It just shows the summary or the place you purchased it. Another thing, I chose to track all cash expenses by putting a certain amount of money in my wallet and then seeing how much was in it at the start of the next week, which yielded great results because I rarely use cash. Second, we started collecting all data towards the middle of October and I would not say I learned an extreme amount, but I did learn some very hard taught lessons throughout the process. Truthfully, I was glad I was already taking the necessary steps in money management. Honestly, I also figured out how economic struggles can affect your schoolwork and build up harmful stress. Third, I feel the Excel chart that I use paint a better picture of the breakup of my spending as a comparable whole. I felt like I lost my identity. My goals and my endeavors all started when I wanted to become an orientation leader for UWB in 2016. Having passed the written and group interview phase. I had a goal to leave no student feel like they were excluded, I was ecstatic that I was able to showcase my commitment to new incoming students while providing genuine care. The day of my individual interview struck me, I nervously walked in that day with an unfortunate outbreak of eczema. Embarrassed, I looked away while talking, pouring my heart into my words but not using my brain. A few days later I got a letter saying I didn’t get the job. My inexperience, shyness and lack of confidence were like shackles around my feet, reminding me of how powerless I was. After many failed attempts to get a job due to my lack of experience, the stability of my life started deteriorating. In the winter of 2016 my girlfriend cheated on me,only to cheat again after I had forgiven her. Close family members passed away and friends ended their lives too short. I didn’t have anyone to talk about my problems with, and my parents still expected me to be the perfect student. overwhelmed with pressure, grief, disappointment, and anger, I skipped classes thinking that there was no point, causing my grades to plummet, and my motivations and self-interest to slip away.

I am Samantha pressdee and I will self assess myself for this quarter. I will discuss my attendance, my grade,work ethic and my overall attitude in this class.

I found this exercise very helpful, reading the scores form each of the sections has given me a lot of insight into what I am good at, and what I can improve on in my field. I scored high in the adapting practice and in linguistics competence and health and health care disparities. To me, this shows me that I am good at communicating effectively in terms of making sure clients understand what options they have and how we can help them find the best decision which will benefit them the most. The results indicated that “Items contained in this…adapting such care to individual patients in the practice environment.” (National Center for Cultural Competence, 2). I have just recently experienced something similar to this, and I can see that even though I am at an internship, I can still see myself taking these things into my everyday life.

I slept through the cry and pain and woke up with joy knowing I would be alright when I receive the Doctor’s report. The genesis of my book initiated in the 7th grade, a kidney condition that could possibly end my life instead gave me life. I grew up in church, however, I did not value nor understand the rituals. As I matured, I adapted a unique personality. I built walls to prevent hurt. In secret, I cared and loved, yet I thought speaking hateful and bitter words would showcase my boldness; I associate boldness with aggression. The struggles I faced, included me, myself and I against the world because I did not want to worry my parents. In Addition, I humbled myself and went before the Lord in prayer, promising that I would change. A few weeks later, I received my healing and continued leaving in ungratefulness and doubt. A shift occurred when I joined Generation Next (bible club) at North Miami Beach Senior High school. I battled depression once again. For the first time I enjoyed school because I kept my mind occupied with work. Unexpectedly, walking into bible club feeling hopeless, a guest speaker spoke about how our communication with God required honesty even though He knows it all. That evening at home, while opening my bible I said these words; “Lord if you see my ache whatever I lay my figures upon will filled this voided”. Last semester in one of my classes, I was required to write a letter between me and God. I don’t remember what the exact letter says, but I do remember telling him that I make a lot of mistakes and I struggle with issues that Christians should not be dealing with. I told God that I am not sure that I am the type of Christian that others should look to be. Although I knew the Word, I prayed often and never missed church, I still felt a void on the inside of me. I often compare myself to Hannah. I felt a barrenness on the inside of me and did not know how to fill it. On top of the spiritual emptiness I felt, I also had to deal with emotional stress. When I first started attending Regent University, I had several fears that tried to prevent me from proceeding. First, I feared my status as a double minority in a field that is predominantly male would prevent many doors from being open to me regardless of my academic ability. Secondly, I feared having a background in engineering and not biblical studies would put me at a great disadvantage in my classes regardless of my knowledge of the Bible. Whenever someone asked me a question, I would have an answer but I was not sure if i gave the right answer because I was never licensed as a minister as a pastor. My role within the church was a server. I cooked, I cleaned, I played with the children, I visited people, I hugged people, I sewed and I loved working with my hands. In the Organizational Behavior class (BMAL 500), I took a personality test online and found out that my personality type is Extravert- Sensing- Thinking- Judging (ESTJ), although I had a marginal preference of extraversion over introversion. Basically in certain situations I can be either an extravert or introvert. I like structure and am very organized. I tend to cope pretty well with the stressors of life and do not allow stress to bog me down. My supervisor would describe me as dependable.

From the test, I realized I have a strong personality in agreeableness and sociability. Before the test, I did not realize that I had this strength and, therefore, it was underutilized. The sociability aspect will create better working relations with fellow students during the class group discussion and with the coworker, this will be extended in the future career. Additionally, I realized I have low emotional stability. This means I handle the situation based on the emotion and I am easily overpowered by emotion when making decisions (Phillipy, 2010).

As relational human beings, people communicate with each other both verbally and nonverbally. Therefore, communication constitutes an important and unavoidable aspect of one’s daily life. Because of communication’s importance, it is beneficial for individuals to investigate their own communication strengths and weaknesses. When people become aware of personal communication weakness, it enables them to take useful measures to improve their communication effectiveness. Thus, in this paper, I will explore my own personal communication strengths and weakness and develop strategies to improve my communication with others.
