Personal Statement: A Career As A Dental Assistant

The career I am pursuing is dental hygiene. Dental hygienists clean patient’s teeth, examine the mouth for diseases like gingivitis. My mom works for a pediatric dentist and I spend a lot of time at her work. That’s what made me choose this career. I love the atmosphere and how friendly everyone is.

I am also a cheer coach for children, ages eight to ten, which has taught me how to treat little ones. I want to be able to make children feel comfortable and safe when they're at the doctors. I want them to feel as if there is always someone there that can help them no matter the severity of the problem. I have always taken a pleasure in meeting new people and I know being a nurse will guarantee that. Being in healthcare, I will be able to interact with all different types of people everyday. Working at Rita's during the summer has given the chance to engage with people that I have never met. I was relate to adapt so quickly with customers and coworkers and I feel like I have become a more open person. Having the opportunity to work with more people on a daily basis would teach me countless valuable life

A career in healthcare has always been an interest of mine. Making a difference is someone?s health was a very important aspect of my career choice. Dental Hygiene has been top of the list since I was a younger child. I was one of those children who loved going to the dentist. I was always amazed by what was going on in the dentist office whether it be the dentist, dental hygienist, or dental assistant. Becoming a young adult and noticing the appearance of others, the smile was and still is the first thing I notice on another individual. Everyone does not have the beautiful smile that society expects; so being the one to improve that and make a difference I feel is an awesome career choice.

My decision to become a pediatrician allows to me combine to two most things I love: children and academics. Children have always played an important role in my life. For example, I enjoyed babysitting little children. I enjoy playing with them and seeing how children can be so creative at a young age. I want to be a medical assistant because I love helping people and I want to make a difference. I hope my smile will be contagious and actually help someone through their day. There is so much hurt and pain in the world and too many people turning their backs on each other. A little kindness, happiness, and love can go a long way. I may only be me, but I refuse to give up and sometimes it only takes one to make a difference. I will strive to be the best and expect more. A dental assistant must be able to work well with others because they are the second pair of hands for the dentist. A dental assistant must be able to understand the dentist and communicate with the dentist to provide proper tools and assistance. Assistants must be very reliable and have excellent manual dexterity so that they can provide the best service to the dentist and to the patient that they are working with. Dental assistants will also have to be knowledgeable on how to properly sterilize and disinfect equipment and instruments and how to set up and lay out instruments and materials for each patient. They must obtain and update patients records as needed and ensure that their patients are comfortable at all times.

Immediately after high school, I attended Concorde Career College with the goal of obtaining a dental assistant degree. Dental assistants help dental operators such as dentists and dental hygienists with providing more efficient dental treatment. We also prepare patients for treatments, sterilize instruments, handle instruments, operate dental equipment, process dental radiographs, and take dental impressions (“Dental Assistant”).

I have had a passion for becoming a healthcare provider for children for quite a while (for a long time). Children are one of the most important individuals of society because they are the future and will one day be in charge of the world. Their health at a young age is indicative to how their health will be as adults. Childhood has a great effect on how a person turns out to be so I hope to help children I hope to use prevention and education to preserve and restore the health of my patients. My career goals are to prevent children from having to spend time in hospitals or in pain and to help them live out their life and dreams to the fullest extent. Children play a very large role in their families, and when a child becomes sick, the whole family becomes distressed. Pediatricians not only heal children, but they help and prevent a family from suffering. I love medicine and children, and I hope to combine these two passions by becoming a pediatrician.

Dentistry appeals to me as it combines a high level of patient interaction with the chance to use practical skills and scientific understanding in order to improve people's oral health being not only mentally stimulating but also practically challenging. As a dentist I will be able to make a positive contribution to my local community, and as a genuine caring person with the determination to thrive in my studies.

Dentistry involves a variety of guidelines and oral practices to help people maintain a good oral hygiene. This career is far more than just making your teeth pretty and clean. “Dentists in private practice manage their own offices. They may supervise other workers such as receptionists, bookkeepers, dental assistants, and dental hygienists. They may order equipment and supplies” (Dentists). This quote shows that Dentists have even more responsibilities than you might assume. Being a Dentist consists of practices you probably aren’t very familiar with at this point in your life. All of this might sound quite challenging and stressful. To overcome the stress that comes with being a Dentist, you will have to be patient. Determination is also a great key to success. Like any other student in the Pre-Health department my goal is to provide care for patients in need. However, I plan to pursue this goal as an obstetrician in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. My whole life I have wanted to be a doctor and work with babies in some way. I grew up with a big family and I love it. As an obstetrician I will be able to work around the babies and experience the new life being brought into the world.
