Personal Statement: A Career As A Nurse

There are multiple reasons as to why I want to be a nurse. Growing up, I have always enjoyed meeting and talking with new people. I am very social and caring so I thought nursing would be the perfect occupation to fit those characteristics. I mostly wanted to become a nurse due to an accident I endured when I was fifteen years old. I was in an all terrain vehicle (ATV) accident and suffered a compound tibia and fibula fracture. I was taken by helicopter from my backyard to St. Vincent’s Mercy Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. I had acquired an infection in the open wound and was required to stay in the hospital for about two weeks. While there, I received great care from my nurses who were always so compassionate with me and made sure I always had what I needed and even wanted. That experience made me realize that I wanted to be that caring, compassionate person for other people like my nurse were for me. I think I am a person to be a nurse because I am such a people person. I love being around others and interacting with them. I genuinely care about others’ well being and want to do everything in my power to improve patients’ conditions and the care they are receiving. I think it is very important to ensure that your patient is comfortable or at least is as comfortable as you can get them. This includes changing the patient’s position frequently and providing any pain comfort with pharmacological measures and non-pharmacological measures. It is also important to make sure that you maintain as much self-dignity as possible when a patient is very vulnerable and cannot do a lot for him or herself. It is also very important that you come off to your patients as approachable so they feel comfortable enough to ask you questions and provide information to you that would be of
