What I know about social work Social Work is always a profession I have been interested in, especially working with children and families. Helping people overcome obstacles and difficulties they are facing in their lives and providing them with opportunities that I did not receive when I was younger. My desire for the field of social work started from a wish to make a positive difference in people’s lives. I have always been known as a “people person”, I’m always a person that people come to for advice and problem solving. As well as a non- judgmental person and I believe that these are two traits that are going to help me in my career as a social worker. Throughout my life I have always had to act older then I am. Firstly, I value equality because I believe everyone in the world should be treated equally regardless of gender, age, weight, race and sexual orientation. I value that everyone should be treated with equal respect and dignity and that everyone should be responsible for one’s own actions. I know Social Workers “depend on one another and have the responsibility to help others” and I think my values are absolutely congruent. “The purpose of counselling is to help clients exercise choice, not to make clients like me”. I believe this statement will be hard for me to follow. I have always been known as a “people person”, I’m always a person that people come to for advice and problem solving. However, growing up my siblings and I were raised to believe in pro- life and I absolutely agree with it. I think this will affect me in my career. Working with families and young adults facing this obstacle will put me in a hard situation because I will have to recognize my limitations when counselling
Professionally I was tasked with putting the care plans for various individuals into action by helping the people cultivate life skills such as investing money and budgeting skills, assisting them in the development of high levels of independence while aiming at improving their social and communication skills. In one way or another, helping these people led me to develop a great passion for working as a social worker. On a daily basis, I provided steady and continuous emotional support so that the individuals can lead a less stressful life. Besides that, I learned how to communicate well with clients on various sensitive issues that affected them emotionally in the most appropriate and understanding manner. Thus, this job significantly improved my patience, communication skills and my imitative in approaching people I meet in my everyday life. I became more aware of my personal beliefs
I decided to apply to the social work master because I have encountered a lot of different experiences, problems, and achievements over the past four years. Similarly, I have always had a deep desire for helping others in a caring and supportive way. I faced many obstacles through my adolescent years such as: having an eating disorder, self-harm, and depression. After going through therapy, I realized that I wanted to help young people to overcome problems and to be able to help them to move forward in life. I want to make them comprehend that change is possible as long as the person want it.

For as long as I can remember, I have always had an interest to work in a field of helping others. At first my focus was on youths and how I can help those individuals in need, but then I became more interested in working with elders who can not properly care for themselves. I also became interested in working with families that are going through a difficult time in life such as a divorce or a bad living environment. These thoughts greatly influenced my professional ambition. My desire to further formalize my love for helping others has gained my interest toward the field of social work.
"Why do I want to be a Social Worker?" It's simple, I want to become a social worker because I have a passion, and need to help people. My passion stems from beginning my first year as an intern for the Durham County Department of Social Services as a Social Worker Assistant, seeing and knowing of the abuse and neglect that most encounter. My need comes from knowing that changing the world starts with helping one person at a time and being able to empathize with them. Having been in their shoes and experiencing it firsthand along with my siblings, gives me more of that knowledge and ability to build that rapport to ensure them that there are others who have gone through just the same as they do or have.

As time went by and I matured, my wish to work in an area that allowed me to make an impact on people’s lives and help the vulnerable through a range of different approaches never diminished; social work was an obvious field through which I could develop these skills and passions. Many families and children don’t feel comfortable talking to just anyone about obstacles they have faced in their lives which is why
