As an undergraduate student at the University of New Mexico I have become increasingly aware of the complex network problems that I face as a citizen of the world. I was born the fourth of December 1991 in Cranbrook British Columbia. I lived there for 18 years. Before joining the military I worked as a fry cook at a Burger King for three years and held part time jobs working for the College of the Rockies summer camp programs during the summer. My parents are currently living together in Cranbrook BC. My father works outside the province testing railway tracks for two months at a time, then returns home for two to three weeks. It was a cold autumn night in North Carolina when I realized that my youth was being taken away from me. I wanted to run away and go back to the life that I had known; where I had the opportunity to go to school was happy and understood the language. Instead I was in a foreign land with my family and we could not return for there was no future in my homeland. People who know me typically find out pretty quickly that next to my passion for medicine, I am actually one of the world’s hugest computer geeks. In fact, when I first entered college, I toyed with the idea of studying computer science before I realized that the study of the human body was so much more exciting because it allows me to combine my fervor for computers and merge it with my interest in medicine.

From a very young age my parents instilled in me a deep appreciation for literature. Horacio Quiroga, Richard Bach, Louisa M. Alcott, and Antoine de Saint-Exupéri were some of the writers that played a fundamental role in my development as a reader and writer. Nonetheless, the pursuit of my intellectual goals has never been as straightforward as I envisioned growing up. Although I completed my junior and senior years of high school in the United States, I returned to my native Dominican Republic upon graduation, where I began a licenciatura en letras at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD). Spring 2008 was my first semester and, unbeknownst to me, it would also be my last. During my brief time at UASD, I became acutely aware of the tensions between political parties during times of campaign and experienced what would become one of the worst protests in the history of the university. I managed to escape the riot before policemen threw tear gas, but the gunshot sounds and the chaos that invaded the library were frightening enough to make me reevaluate

While writing a compelling college essay may seem to be a daunting task at first, I believe that the key to generating a unique and moving topic is dedicating effort early in the writing process to personal reflection on your goals and motivations. Often, in writing personal statements for colleges and other applications, I set aside time to dedicate to focused reflection about events or moments in my life that illustrate my values or identity. In terms of the mechanics of an effective personal statement, I typically utilize the “zoom in, zoom out” method, which involves recounting a specific anecdote early in the essay, and then demonstrating how this anecdote contains lessons that apply to greater aspects of your motivation or identity. My results after taking the o*net interest profile test I have found that my results lead to artistic, social and enterprising as my highest ones. When I read all three of them I mostly agree with the artistic and social portions. I've always had a big passion for art, when it comes to making something boring too great i find alot of intrest. When I think about doing anything art related I think about doing it as a side job, I don't think I would like it much as an everyday thing.

If I were to choose an intended audience to target, my choice would be adolescents currently attending high school. High school students in this day and age have their plates full to the brim. With all the classes they are required to take, the pile of homework they’re assigned each night, and the extracurricular activities they’ve signed up for, it’s no wonder that they don’t have much time to think about the future. Despite having full schedules, I believe that a modern home economics, or life skills class, would be worth freeing up time for. My painfully shy personality has always tended to be a burden. It has held me back from completing the simplest of tasks such as speaking out in class, sharing my own thoughts and it has even held me back from getting what I want. The reason for this was that I believed it was simpler to just say “I don't know” than to be scrutinized or judged for my beliefs. Consistently being held back by my modest character restrained me from having my own voice and that is something that took a while for me to realize.

When I first started training to be a nurse, my most compelling reason for peruse in the career was to care for the sick. Now that I am approaching the end of my three years of training my rationale has changed, I now want to empower patients in regards to their own health, supporting families in need, care for the ‘sick’ child and make a difference amongst as many people as I can.
