Personal Statement: Achieving A Higher Education

Hello, I am Kelly Conley and I have recently enrolled at Boise State University (BSU) as a sophomore. My goal at BSU is to earn a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis on history and graduate by 2018. I have recently retired from the United States Air Force (USAF) after 24 years of service. My hobbies include white water rafting, gardening, and spending time with my wife of 16 years, Heather.

Pursuing college has always been one of my biggest goals to achieve in life. After high school, I will higher my education by attending college. My ultimate goal will be to one day become a veterinarian. The love and compassion I have for animals plays a big role in choosing this course of study. Growing up on a ranch, I am exposed to animals such as horses, cows, dogs, chickens, and rabbits. Tending to the animals and keeping them in good health gives me the experience I need to see if the veterinarian study is fitting for myself. Furthermore, I plan to attend BYU-Idaho which offers a pre vet course that gives students who are seeking to become veterinarians the opportunity to intern at a vet

I have always been a fun and happy person. I loved to dance, go shopping, hang out with friends,watch movies with my family and go on vacations. Many people go through adversity that change them in significant ways and I was one of them. My way of getting through my issues was going to activities such as dance, cheerleading, and wrestling and it seemed to be working until one day at wrestling practice where I hurt my foot and had to go to the nurse. At the nurses office I had to take a survey that asked if I had ever been sexually assaulted, I answered truthfully and circled “yes.” I figured they would ask me about it however I didn’t expect them to call my mom and social services. When going into the 5th grade, I would drive by kipp every single day. Every time I would drive by, I would constantly tell my mom that I wanted to attend kipp my 5th grade year. When I got accepted into kipp, I was so excited. At the age of 10, I was being introduced to college. My very first homeroom was Brown University. Kipp pushed students to want to attend college to better their futures. I stayed in kipp from 5th-12th grade. Those years in kipp, we went on plenty of college tours so that the students could get a feeling of how college is. In high school when preparing for college, kipp offered so much help when it came down to ACT prep and also preparing for college interviews. I have seen others go back to college with two or more kids and make good grades. They were making something of themselves. I want to make something of my life. I do not want to have to worry with losing my job and finding another one without a degree. It is hard to find jobs without an education. I want to show my two young girls that it is important to get a higher education. I want them to know that going and getting a degree is very important in the world we live in this day and time. I want to show that it is possible to better yourself even with a family. My youngest has Down syndrome, and I feel it is important to show her that with obstacles you can still further your education. Going into college, I expect many challenges. The biggest challenge I expect is all of the environmental changes. For eight years now, I’ve been attending Julia R. Masterman School. For eight years, I’ve seen the same people, at the same place, every single day. Every day, I’ve woken up to the same daily routine. I wake up, go to school, come home, eat, sleep, and then repeat. Usually, there’s someone to wake me or feed me, but in college, there won’t be. Ultimately, I’ll be responsible for myself and everything single thing that involves me.

When I was at the end of my high school year, I was anxious to await on my diploma. All I could think about was; I'm almost there, and then I will be off to college soon. I was wondering how I would be able to conquer my dreams, and become business woman or math teacher. I was told college was going to be tough, hard to handle, you would get no sleep, whatsoever, and eventually become so stressed. But that did not stop me, my guts just told me to keep pushing forward, and to finish what I had left to do, which was receiving my diploma. After doing so, I did not want to turn back, I wanted to keep going, to see where my life, my goals would take me and how far I will go. I want to go to college because I want to improve my skill and my ability .I think I can learn many things and know all kinds of knowledge in college. All I learn in college can use in the future.The most important thing in college is to learn how to get along with others and enhance my interpersonal skill. That is why I want to go to college. Moreover,I can join the club and know people who has the same interests or hobbies.There are many ways to make our college more colorful.

My life has been an ongoing stuggle, but my hard work, determination, and enthusiasm for my education have enabled me to pursure my dreams. My academic plans are to major in pre-occupational therapy. After graduating and completing the prerequisite, I plan to obtain a license in Occupational Therapy by attending OT School. Success does not come from a pay check. For me, helping and assisting others acheive their goals is the purest form of success. I want to travel and eventually settle down in my hometown. My overall career goal is to give back to the community that shaped me into the person I am. I am a hardworking-dedicated student, who focuses on my work, yet I have always enjoyed being involved in extracirricular activities. As you can see from my application, I enjoy sports and clubs. In the late 1700's and early 1800's, literature began to show it was changing thanks to the newly formed democracy in America. As is the case with any young government, many different interest groups arose to attempt to mold the government according to their vision of democracy. Washington Irving, a native New Yorker born in 1783, grew up in a world engulfed in these democratic ideals. He grew up to be, as many would grow up in this atmosphere, a political satirist. This satirical nature of Irving's shows up well in "Rip Van Winkle", as he uses historical allusions and symbolic characters to mockingly compare colonial life under British rule to the democracy of the young United States.

Life is a continual learning process, which requires a strong method to develop better ways of apprenticeship. Personally, being able to obtain a higher education gives me an opportunity to be better in many ways. Everyone should have any personal goals in life in order to survive, prosper and succeed in every journey that life gives. As for me, being a University of Phoenix student, I hope to achieve all of my goals on which I have been trying to pursue and obtain through the years. They are goals that I believe I need to have to be a successful member of the society, and through attending the university I also hope to gain a more positive image of myself, build my personal growth, along with achieving

Any major transition in life brings with it new challenges. It is only natural for new circumstances to be accompanied by a variety of completely unfamiliar experiences, settings and lessons. Certainly this was true of my leap from high-school to college. Taking the next step in my education was something into which I entered with both excitement and apprehension as the course of these years could have a substantial influence in shaping my future. This mix of emotions would prove to be quite justified upon my admission to college. Simultaneously one of the most engaging and most rewarding periods of my life, my first few years at this university would present me with trial and inspiration in equal parts. I desire admission into a graduate degree program as a way of deepening both my knowledge and passion in my chosen field.

I decided that I wanted to be a doctor my freshman year of high school. I did not know what kind of doctor, but I knew I wanted to help people. Through my upbringing in a military family, I often saw people in pain whether it was from the loss of a loved one, injury of a loved one, or an injury or sickness of themselves. Once I became fully aware of all the pain around me, I decided that the best way for me to help these people was to pursue a job in the healthcare field and become a doctor. Though my path in healthcare I would be able to improve their quality of life and lessen their pain, which is very rewarding and is one the driving forces of my pursuit of a higher education. When I started college, I was very happy, but clueless. It felt amazing that I had the opportunity to continue my education, but I did not know how to make it through my first semester. However, I said to myself that I should grab this great opportunity, or it would go pass me. I looked up for supports from every resource I could get from college, and surprisingly I made it through smoothly for the last three years. I feel so grateful and honored that I am going to be first generation in my family ancestry who is graduating from college.

One of my academic goals is to get the best education possible at Allan Hancock College before I transfer. I will accomplish this by always paying attention to all my teachers and do all my work and most importantly make school my number one priority. Another academic goal that I have is to transfer to Cal Poly or Long Beach and obtain my Master’s degree in education. I also want to graduate with honor and with a 3.5 GPA or above. I decided that I wanted to be a teacher because I like helping people out and also I enjoy working with kids. I selected these goals because my economic background is not the great, most of the money that my family makes goes to the rent and daily expenses. We live in a small apartment and we are a family of five; we don’t usually go out and eat at restaurants only in special occasions.
