Often times people go into college with their eyes closed tightly, meaning they are totally unprepared for what lies ahead. There are a variety of aspects that determine whether students are successful in college. Meeting basic requirements to enter college, selecting the right courses, learning how to study on the college level, and managing time are all key factors in becoming a successful college student. Throughout college life students are faced with a variety of temptations. How they choose to overcome these temptations determine whether they become successful or not in
Through the course Strategies for College Success Cpd 150 taught by Michelle Garland one can learn many things. Despite this course possibly being more helpful to others then it was to me it did still teach me multiple things. At the beginning of the course I had been dealing with relationship drama and figuring out how online college works, now halfway through the course the drama has subsided and I understand how online college works.I have learned that one of the most important factors of college success is determination. It is a person's ability to keep trying as hard as they can no matter what comes their way. I say this because college can be difficult and even seem pointless at times, but those who are determined enough to keep going, to keep trying, will eventually succeed. Although I am stubborn I have issues staying determined, I do generally accomplish what I need to. Another skill going along with determination is the ability to seperate the various areas of ones life. For example the ability to have a fight with your best friend then go to class and learn just fine. Now while this can be harmfull as well, since it does involve temporarily bottling your emotions, it can also
College is a life changing adventure, and I want it to be the best experience I can possibly receive. Attending Medgar Evers College, I have set high hopes and expectations. I hope to interact with people of diverse ethnicity. I want to learn more about different cultures and the individualization of people. And so far getting to know people on campus has been one of my greatest experiences. I have met so many wonderfully different people here. I hope to develop more independence. To be more responsible for keeping up with my schoolwork, preparing for tests, and making most out of my classes, even when they start early. Being successful in college is about more than handing your work in on time and passing classes. It’s about staying motivated. I know for a fact there will be a lot of demanding of my time. I know that procrastinating is not the best way of approaching situations. It is my responsibility to try to regularly motivate myself, even if it’s pulling
My goals at Appalachian State University are to gain education needed to become a superior leader and gain knowledge about other communities and groups of people. While at Appalachian State, I plan on pursuing a degree in Management with hopes of becoming a community leader in the future. Management will help me meet new people and explore how others think outside of Randolph County. It is essential to broaden your horizons and develop interpersonal skills to become successful in the future. I feel like a University such as Appalachian State is an exemplary institution for learning about management, the way others ruminate, and meeting new peers and sharing ideas. Appalachian’s diverse community will prepare me for a career in management and success in the future by enabling me to express my ideas and learn about others as well.
Rutgers University would dramatically help me achieve my personal and educational goals. I am currently a sophomore at Gloucester County College with a dream of starting my own business. I will be the first in my family to obtain a bachelor’s degree. Receiving a degree would be a huge milestone in my family and I would be setting a good example to the rest of my family. I originally applied to Rutgers when I was a senior in high school and I was ecstatic about my acceptance, but I had a personal issue that ultimately changed my plan for college. Unfortunately, I had no idea Rutgers had online degrees, so I turned to community colleges that offered online degrees as a quick solution in order to still attend college that fall. I am planning
A student who succeeds is one who encompasses the bravery and courage to start anew. Even knowing that, I was a student who feared every little action I took in high school because of the consequences I was afraid to face afterwards. The uneasiness of carrying out plans alone shaped my character into an indecisive clutter about everything inside my mind. But even with that hindrance, I tackled one of the hardest choices I had to make: choosing Case Western Reserve University over University of Georgia.
I have a numerous amount of achievements through High School, Community College and now at A&M. I was an Early College High School student in Dallas County at Cedar Hill Collegiate High School. That experience helped me to earn my Associates Degree before I even got my High School diploma. While in High School I was named to the President's Honor Roll list 4 times at my Community College. I am currently awarded the Greater Texas Foundation Scholarship at A&M for my test score of 33 on the ACT as well as my Early College High School background. Thanks to being exposed to college level work at a young age, this past spring I was awarded the Dean's Honor Award for achieving a GPA of 4.0. The experience with Greater Texas Foundation has opened
As pretentious as it sounds, I don’t think succeeding in high school was particularly difficult. I say this aware of the privilege attached to that statement, but from what I both experienced and witnessed, the simple acts of paying attention and completing assigned work got most people through. Conversely, college will require significantly more time, effort, and discipline, which I intend to embrace because my motivations as a student have completely evolved. Despite the relative ease of high school, I did work hard, but only to uphold my class rank both out of competition and in preparation for college applications. School felt ineffectively structured around testing, and not around actual intellectual growth, contrasting the whole philosophy of college. Now, I sincerely crave knowledge to grow not only as a student, but as a person, to expand my view of the world and attempt to understand its many complexities. Investing in myself, and my future requires more than high school ever would, and that’s fairly reasonable all
It has always been a dream of mine to attend Grand Valley State University since I was in middle school. My older brother did not attend college because he went straight into the military and my little brother is still in high school. I have always had the pressure of doing so well in school because my brothers do not apply themselves. This has pushed me to always do my best. This year it has finally all hit me that I am tired of using my pressure from my parents to motivate me and that I need to be self-motivating. This has taken a huge toll on my grades because I am transitioning.
I am uniquely qualified to receive the WCU grant because of my dedication to academics, seminary involvement and pursuit of holiness.
Although my grades didn’t reflect a self-motivated student, I will demonstrate my effort by raising my GPA level and successfully finish courses. I plan on being
PREP is going to be an exciting experience for me to learn new material. I believe that participating in PREP will help me be better prepared for university work. A&M is a hard college to get into, only accepting 7% of all applicants. Prep will allow me to make a better effort to get to Texas A&M University. I want to get to year four and succeed at completing college.
From taking my first steps at the age of 8 months old, to walking alone to a friend’s house at 3(kids don’t try this at home), followed by cooking dinners autonomously at 10 years old, my life has accumulated to a series of beautiful memories that my father has meticulously sculpted to raise me as an independent young lady. He taught me the virtues of such self governing and the beauty of freedom that such a gift dons. Every day I strive to honor such teachings. It is no wonder that these lessons have led me to strive to pay for college by myself.
As I took the LASSI, I was comparing my educational experience at UCSB and currently at USC. I know that if I would have taken the LASSI while being an undergrad at UCSB plenty of those percentages would be on the lower end. There are various reasons for this; all revolving around my experience being a first-generation college student. When I first started UCSB, I met my first friends who were from a different culture and race. Prior to UCSB, my only knowledge about Asian and white people came from the media and my friends’ experiences. Moreover, much of my knowledge was negative and when I went to UCSB I unconsciously chose to hang out with those who looked like me. Nevertheless, I quickly learned that what I had seen and heard prior to UCSB
There are several qualities to have to be successful in college. These qualities can range from attending class to going above and beyond what’s expected. Success comes from the journey taken or the path chosen. Success also comes from being prepared. As a student, I must step up to the challenge and find the path to success along the way. Several ways I define success is to uphold academic integrity, have the ability to prioritize, and to motivate myself to stay on top of what needs to be accomplished.
