Background and Inspiration
From an early age, I have a strong aspiration to understand how a human mind works. I was fascinated by how complicated the underlying theories and motivations are in human reasoning and decision-making. I first realized I wanted to study psychology after I took a social psychology course during the last year of my degree in economics. While economics gave me a strong mathematical and statistical foundation, I felt that this subject is insufficient to help me fully understand a human mind. My research suggested that affective visual cartoon faces and affective auditory sounds can facilitate infants successfully to acquire the more difficult rule. However, the same benefit does not apply to the pair of visual geometric shapes and auditory syllables. The reasons could be the strong influence of affective stimuli on infants, especially when emotions and affective stimuli are essential and important information for infants to communicate with their parents and other humans. Thus, the affective stimuli in the experiment could better capture infants’ attention to the underlying abstract rule structure, and contribute to the success in rule acquisition.
After performing this research, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to present my findings at the Asia-Pacific Conference on Vision in Hong Kong in July 2011. The presentation was successful and the research topic received a lot of attention and interests from other researchers from Asia, Europe and the United States specializing in cognitive psychology.
After the success and practicality of my first research, I am currently involved in a follow-up study for my thesis. In this new project, I will work with Dr. Chia-huei Tseng, Dr. Anita Wong and Dr. Linda Iao to extend the infant rule learning to a longitudinal study, examining the correlation
