In 2007, a young woman quit her career to become a stay at home mother. There were many reasons behind leaving her employer of seven years. The reason presented to her employer was that she possessed a deep-seated longing to become the primary caregiver for her child. However, the truth behind her departure was that tension between her and a newly promoted, inexperienced, and unsupportive supervisor had created an undesirable work environment. This manager strictly enforced a traditional work schedule without consulting the organization’s guidelines for employee development, which included flexible work schedules. By doing this, the supervisor refused to consider the other employee’s need for work-life balance. The department staff did not receive the loss of flexible work arrangements well. The young woman was the first to leave, but within six months, several employees found employment elsewhere. Many employers have enacted policies and strategies to encourage employees to balance their personal and professional responsibilities. According to Wang and Verma (2012), “The aim of these programs is to help organizations to attract and retain highly skilled workers by providing support to balance workers’ personal lives and their work” (p. 411). When making the decision to return to the workforce it is important to review and evaluate employment options especially while attempting to strike a balance between a workplace environment and home life. As the American workplace has adapted its structure and culture to outside forces, the adaptations (such as location of jobs, changes in needed job skills, and organizational restructuring) have had an impact on employees and their families. Describe the way these adaptations have affected workers and families and analyze the responses of workers and families.
My selected mentor is Jerry Martin RN, BSN. He is a co-worker that has inspired me to return to school and that any dream is obtainable. Jerry has a degree in biology and was working as a ward clerk in our ER when I met him. He has a degree in biology and worked in finance before working at the hospital. Jerry states” I was unhappy with my career in finance and I realized I had drifted a long way from my education and my core belief. During a conference a guest speaker said “true happiness is found when you find the one thing you would do in life even if you did not get paid for it”. That was my “aha” moment.” G.M. Martin (personal communication, September 3,2013) Jerry entered nursing school in 2006 and graduated with a BSN in 2011. He is currently working toward a MSN and striving to be a FNP. He is a great nurse and it is a privilege to have him as a co-worker and my mentor.
On May 27, 2011, I sat in the crowd of thousands of people waiting to see the cheer from the football field. No, this wasn’t a professional football game, or even a college game. This was the graduation and commissioning of 1000 men and women from the United States Naval Academy. As the covers of all the former midshipmen went into the air, and the crowd went wild, I stood in awe, speechless. Even as an 11 year old boy, I knew that I wanted to be that young man standing on the ten yard line, in an immaculate white uniform, jumping up and down and hugging his buddy next to him. As I read stories and biographies of men like Marcus Luttrell and Chris Kyle, some of the most courageous men in the world, I realized my calling in life. I was to be an officer in the United States Navy.
It can also become challenging to achieve work-life balance when not all employers offer employees benefits which our textbook outlines as ‘stress removers’. This includes - flexible and limited work time, job sharing, telecommuting, personal leave, and child care support (McShane & Glinow, 2017). The article also stressed that many employees face being penalized or terminated stating, “Most people do not believe that their workplaces truly support flexibility or that they could work an alternative schedule without career risks” (Chan,
Compared to this time last year, I have more self-confidence when identifying as a social worker. Even though I had previous work experience in the field, I internally referred to myself as a student. Since completing my foundation year of field, I have embraced the term social worker professionally and personally. Professionally, I am constantly aware of the core values my title encompasses while assisting the clients whom I serve. These core values have developed in my own personal beliefs and moral systems. Recognizing people’s strengths and systems that incorporate their lives that reflect avenues to which may rely on the assist of a social worker. Compared to this time last year, I am able to assist clients with identifying their strengths, systems, assessments, and interventions to a presenting problem.
In a 2002 survey conducted by TrueCareers job site, seventy percent of 1,500 workers revealed that they have poor balance between their work and their personal lives. These results come to no surprise to any workers who devote all of themselves to the public, while abandoning themselves and their families. At work, employees are playing the roles of what others expect them to be, but when they are away from work, who are they really? When one stops to think about it, there are so many ways to turn one 's hectic work days into therapeutic and fun-filled days by simply discovering one 's interests and making them a priority. After-work activities to choose from vary according to one 's personality type, interests, and mood. For instance, some people enjoy the outdoors, while others prefer the indoors; some people like to always stay busy while others may want a breather every now and then. People with various preferences may choose a number of approaches to relaxation and renewal as listed below: Activities for people who love recreation and fitness (the kinesthetic type) 1. Playing with children or pets outside (helps to bring out one 's "inner child") 2. Exercising by going to the gym, walking, cycling, playing tennis, swimming, or bowling 3. Gardening (Planting or tending to flowers and crops) Activities for people who love meditation or reflection 1. Writing a poem, a short story, or a passage in one 's journal (releases one 's feelings and keeps things in
Ms. Isabel Rimanoczy made great points in this article. Though some may view her as a work body, she and I share a mutual understanding when it comes to work-life balance. Ms. Rimanoczy is not buying the idea that there is some sort of balance between the two aspects of our lives. “Work-life balance is dead” and it may be a good thing” (Rimanoczy, 2015). I agree with her statement because if anyone takes the time to think about it, they will soon come to terms with the idea that it really becomes impossible to separate work and personal life. Some of us grow up with moral values, standards, and family traditions carried on through religious beliefs. When we go to work we will bring along our character because our personal life defines us as
Work-life balance is a combination of interactions among different areas of one’s life; the advantages and disadvantages associated with that balance/imbalance are countless and can affect multiple levels of society (Schoenfeld, 2005).

In today’s world many people are trying to balance their work and their personal life which can be a huge challenge. Companies whose organizational design supports its employees’ work-life balance may be more financially successful than those that does otherwise. Many employees consider work-life balance more important than the monetary reward. Employees with a balanced personal and professional life demonstrate a better job performance than those who feel “pressured” in either their personal or professional life. In ideal situations, employer demands and employee’s ideal work situation rarely meet the middle ground, those who do, perceive that they are in control.. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the Healthcare Clinic’s organizational design based on the employees’ work-life balance.
