Personal Statement For Grandpa

I remember my fingers leaving shallow depressions on her cold pale skin. As the Paramedics left the room, they sadly instructed us to say our goodbyes and that they would be back shortly. If I had known she was going die, I would have said more to my grandma when she kissed me on the cheek the previous day. Our large family sat in the living room crying as my grandma was placed in a large black bag before being taken away. That sorrowful morning I watched as the paramedics unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate my grandma. This frightful and gloomy experience would inspire me to one day save lives. After witnessing a patient code, working as patient care technician (PCT), and experiencing the sincere generosity of two physicians, I became certain that I wanted to be a doctor.

Growing up with my grandparents had helped me determine my decision of pursuing a career in the medical field. My grandparents were Chinese farmers who would always reaching out for our neighbors and providing them with life needs. By growing up with them, I obtain their personalities as well. They taught me to be humble, responsible and caring. I remember a quote by Stephen Richard, “When you reach out to those in need, do not be surprised if the essential meaning of something occurs.” This quote was later proven by my own experience, which I would get this indescribable gratification I get after helping someone. Therefore, I wanted to become someone who can reaching out for others as my grandparents ever since I was little. Being in the

My greatest career goal is to become a pediatric nurse, nursing is an extremely challenging, and physically demanding career, however, it is also very rewarding and interesting. The medical field has fascinated me since I was a child, and in the last couple of years I have realized my true passion is to work with children. I have worked with children all of my life, and in my junior year of high school I took AP Child Psychology, in this class a few times a week the students would help out in the preschool that was in the same building. Working in that preschool was one of the best experiences I have ever had. Getting to know the children, helping them with their worksheets, and playing with them really showed me how amazingly creative and compassionate children are, and even though you may have a few problems with sharing, or a couple of cranky kids, overall it was great, and it solidified my decision to become a pediatric nurse.

As a child, I loved going to work with my mother during my days off from school. She worked at a nursing home, and I was amazed by all of the health care employees I was surrounded by every day. I watched, in admiration, as the nurses gave the elderly their medications, while the nursing assistants made sure they were comfortable and healthy, and while the doctors checked in from time to time to give routine check-ups. As soon as I turned 12 and was old enough to start volunteering at this nursing home, I signed up to do so with excitement pouring out of me. To this very day, I am still active in volunteering at the same nursing home that prompted me to pursue a career in medicine in the first place.

I learned so much from this experience. The importance of insurance when admitting patients to the hospital, is key to all facets of health care delivery. In addition, the humanistic aspect of working in the medical field was a constant lesson. Speaking to a mother whose children were killed in a car accident was one of the hardest things I had to do. As I asked her for her children’s names and birthdays, all I could think about was that this mother would never get to hold them again. During my time working in the emergency room, I observed the composure of physicians in tough situations and have taken on that attitude when I face those same challenges. I have observed the formation of relationships, which are founded on confidence and trust. Creating and maintaining long-lasting relationships is something that I appreciate about my own doctor and mentor of ten years. I aspire to do the same when I become a

If there's anyone who could brighten up a room full of people arguing over which part of the turkey they want, disagreeing over politics, sharing the latest family gossip, it's definitely him. It's Thanksgiving and as I enter my grandparent’s house, I see him conversing with my aunt who's resemblance is uncanny, as he sips his glass of white wine and instantly looks up at me. It’s my grandfather, Gelo.

To say that this incident was the defining moment as to why I chose medicine would be an exaggeration, but it had undoubtedly been an affirmation of my decision. To embark on a career in Medicine was not an easy decision, and it was certainly not something that I had aspired to be from a young age. In fact, it took nearly half a decade of careful consideration and exploration before I reached this conclusion. My motivation to become a doctor stems not only from my love for science, but also from the special connection that is established between a patient and a doctor during diagnosis and consultation. The opportunity for devoting a lifetime to alleviating illnesses stands as my inspiration. That day changed my father's future, as well as mine. The mutual respect exchanged between my father and the medical staff, as well as the doctor’s ability to relieve my father’s suffering and save his eyesight, inspired me to obtain a career in medicine. The experience has provided me a very in-depth look at a field I have imagined myself getting involved in. I cannot wait to walk in each week, observe the daily routine of the healthcare team and engage with the patients even if it's just listening to their story. I have learned many important lessons from the doctors, nurses and physical therapists that I have worked with. I've seen them light up when a patient turns a corner and feel elated when they are finally able to go home. I’ve been able to witness the joy of a baby being born and also had the experience of holding a patient's hand who was told disheartening news. Despite this, seeing a patient get completely healed is rewarding and one of the main reasons I want to be a doctor. My experiences volunteering have helped me grow into a person of determination, dedication, integrity, and compassion. It has made me have a greater desire to learn more about medicine. Ovid said, “Medicine sometimes snatches away health, sometimes gives it.” That summer, medicine, and all the research they do at MD Anderson Cancer Center gave my father life. I would never wish what my family went through on anyone, but I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason. The countless hours in the waiting rooms, the pacing back and forth, the prayers every time my father went into surgery;

I applied for Nursing school several years later. It was overwhelming, but well worth the effort. I have worked in all different fields, including nursing psych, med surge, home health, school nurse, public health and my latest role is a Service coordinator with one of the biggest insurance companies in the country. I want to be more hands on with my members. I would love to have a relationship with them and their families. I want to be able to provide the highest quality of treatment they deserve through assessment, education and prevention. I dream to be able to make a change in low impoverished areas.

White, the color of snow, the house he lives in, the white sky, all remind me of my grandpa. He always drives all the way from Toronto to Buffalo just to pick me up instead of sending one of my aunts. He welcomes me with a warm and loving smile. At his house he always gives up his bed for me and would alway asks me what I want. He takes me and my sister everywhere we want and gives us everything we want, even if we don’t deserve it. I remember when he took me out for lunch and he would keep asking me if I wanted anything else and would insist to get me something. One of the things that I love about him are his songs. My mom was rush in the hospital because she collapsed on her first day of her job, when I was eight years old. Her doctor did not know how to help her but prescribed her some medication that she would take everyday. She was never her healthy self anymore because every now and then her pain would come back. There would be days, that she could not wake up from her bed. I was worry for her because if anything were to happen to her, I do not know what my sibling and I are doing to do. We only have her left. At that moment in time, I knew I want to be in the healthcare field because I want to be able to help her, if anything were to happen to her.

Grandpa would retire the flag when dusk came over. He’d walk through the turquoise of the front door and he’d struggle only slightly to turn the weary handle with a hand made blue by the slow veins painting the translucent paper palette of his skin. He’d cross the browns and greens which were his lawn, sometimes swampy from the spurting-spewing of the sprinklers that he could not fix forever, towards his nation’s symbol drooping nobly in the hot and windless air of the San Fernando Valley, where life is eighty degrees but still feels cold and lonely in the sea of homes and houses that never seems to end.

I think the person who has had the most profound effect on my life besides my parents is my grandfather. I never realized before how much of an effect he had on my interests and goals for the future. Years ago, he used to tell me stories about historical events and experiences he had fighting in Vietnam and my great grandfather fighting in World War 2. His vivid descriptions always made it so interesting and, in some cases, more light-hearted than what actually happened. To this day he still has more stories to tell me, and never fails to captivate my interest. In doing this, he opened my eyes to my biggest interest, history, and encouraged me to pursue this interest throughout school. I feel like it would help to give a short summary of his life and how it affected me.

When we were together we were invincible, us against the world. I’d look up to him, not only because he was 6’4, but because he was my grandpa. I have clear memories of him picking me up from school, playing old school reggae music during our adventurous car rides. We’d always sing along to our favorites, sometimes turn the music up so loud the people in the cars next to us could hear it. When I would visit his apartment, the familiar smell of drywall and pennies would fill the air. It was my hideaway, my home away from home. My grandpa collected pennies in water jugs. He would say that one day they’d be worth more than just pennies. I loved it there, not only because he had a freezer filled with many flavors of ice cream to which he would often say to me “you can have all you can eat” but because it was our time to bond. For five years it was my mom, my dad, and my grandpa helping me to grow. Those are my favorite people, my role models. Being around my grandpa brought me such comfort and joy.
