Personal Statement
I was impressed by a good friend of mine when she mentioned about the classes she was taking at my home country there in La Paz Bolivia, South America. My friend’s emotion, passion, and energy when counting me about her experience by at that time doing her internship in an agency in that, later on, she would become the Director until the present, made me think that Social Work is the career that I want to pursue. I enrolled in the social work career and I finished it working in an NGO. In that agency, I worked with several woman migrants from rural areas, that wasn't inserted in the labor force and that several of them were the breadwinners. I started my life experience as a social worker there, and that experience inspired me to continue my education years later. After have worked and lived in my hometown for several years I decided to move to this country which would give me more opportunities to work and study., but I had to face one little problem here, at this moment that problem was the propulsion that helped me to stay here to apply for a master classes at this time. I didn’t speak the English language, I just knew the basic but I saw that starting as an ESL student I would one day to learn this language and look for a job I wanted to perform. That job was to have a spot as a Social Worker in some place I would be welcomed to work.
I would like to have my Master in Social Work because I have years of experience working in the field of Social Work.
I began my social work studies over twenty-five years ago at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. I never questioned my decision to pursue a career in social work; I loved my classes and worked hard to learn as much as possible. But the information I gained in undergraduate school simply opened the doors of my education. Most of my learning has come through constant questioning, personal research, and especially through work and life experience. Through these experiences I have encountered the challenges faced by individuals, families, and society and have been able to further access and develop the innate personality traits and abilities that originally led me to study social work as well as learn and practice the many skills necessary to be a successful mental health counselor.
I am a Member of the Toronto Police Black Community Constitutive Committee (BCCC), where my main role is educating the police on strategies to engage with the youths, adding an anti-oppressive lens. Am also the Vice Chair of the Social Work Students’ Union; and a mentor, and lead mentor in the Tri-Mentoring program. I have made a personal vow to help create a legacy of change and a sense of community where everyone is welcomed, loved and accepted. I am motivated and driven to help the Social Work program and the Faculty of community, achieve our vision, which is to challenge the status quo and create meaningful change.
One thing that I have always been certain of when it comes to my future is that I want to inspire, help, and have a positive impact on as much people as possible. I want to fight for those that have no voice and create any necessary social change in my community. The field of social work would help me accomplish that. Social work is a broad field where I would be able to work with various populations of people throughout the community ranging from children to the elderly. I believe that by pursuing a master’s degree in social work I will have a sense of deep satisfaction knowing that I will be prepared to face any obstacle in my future as a social worker. I am aware that social work can be challenging but knowing that I will be able to advocate for others that are helpless and fight for social justice will be very rewarding. I first became interested in social work seven years ago, after my aunt and her husband decided to become foster parents, I would help my aunt take care of the children, and they were all very sweet kids that I will never forget. My aunt and her husband were given the opportunity to adopt a 5-year-old girl and shortly after were able to adopt her newborn sister. It was a very joyous day for our family when the adoption was finalized. During that time I met their social worker, she was a very kind and knowledgeable woman that inspired me to pursue a career in social work. I admired how passionate she was about her job and how much she enjoyed making an
Social work is a career that finds and chooses you, rather than you selecting it. Social work has always been an immense portion of my life even when I had no recollection of what social work entailed. My life revolved around so many situations that had a social worker stepped in, my life would be totally different than it is today. Many individuals and agencies lack the compassion and empathy for oppressed people. Having been in many circumstances, has given me the experience and background that influenced me to go into social work, as well as the understanding of my role and responsibilities that I will assume as a professional social worker, and my reasons for selecting the program at ASU School of Social Work and thoughts on how the Mission Statement addresses my career goals.
When I was six and placed in the Foster Care System for three years away from my mother, it made me value the importance of family one needs a young age. This childhood experience I hold with me will benefit in the field of social work, which is what I want to pursue in college as my degree. I believe one of the most difficult obstacles I had to face being taken away from my mother while not knowing the problem of the situation and learning how handle at such a young age to be away from my mother's warmth. I give complete gratitude to my mother who fought her best to win us over when the odds were against her, and to the thoughtful social workers who understood the situation my siblings and me. As I now enter college I have taken a look at
I would like to study in the area of Social Work because I would like to make a greater impact with this system that has seemed to be crumbling down. This has grabbed my attention when I have learned that my friends have been in the system as a ward of the state and was in foster homes until a home was found for them. I will be honest that I haven't studied any class that has social work because I didn't think it was relevant, but with my personal feelings on how I always found that I love to help people before I help myself I would like to put my time and effort into helping young children or children of any age. I have come to realize that my passion lies in helping people who are less advantaged than I am. I am applying to Tennessee State
I am Dolores Hatcher and my hometown is Birmingham, Alabama. I am returning to college fulltime after a ten year absence. The university classifies me as a senior transfer / non-traditional student. I am entering my fourth semester at Alabama A&M University. My major is Social Work and it is my passion. My life has been centered on helping people. Twenty plus years ago I joined the military and after a small number of years I changed my job to Chaplain Assistant (religious support). I feel this is why Social Work as a career field suits me more than any other field. I want to work in the health care field of gerontology. Becoming a Clinical Social Worker is the ultimate dream.
In the past 34 years of my life I have had a wide arrange of experiences that have brought me to the decision to pursue a Master’s in Social Work degree. The earliest experience occurred when I was in elementary school, my Mom made the decision to go to college and after almost eight years and a lot of hard work she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Social Work. This experience inspired me in my own life to work hard and find something you love doing. She taught me the importance of helping others and seeking out justice for people who are less fortunate.
As a member of my College, I had the opportunity of taking part in different charities event within, and spend long hour in planning and organising. Throughout these events I have had really goods experiences on one hand, whereas the bad experiences are numerous. From an early age I have taken a keen interest in running things, and one of them was getting involved into the college charity fundraiser. My most recent charity event has been through friends and classmates, where I have organised a football tournament in my local, it was a very successful day and I made new interaction which I can hopefully utilize in the future. These were the experiences that first trigger my attention in the event management and this interest was more enhanced subsequent courses I took at the College. These are the skills I have gained from my past experiences as a fundraiser; honesty, respect, integrity and a desire to achieve everything that I can.
Social work will enable me to make a great impact in people’s lives; it will be used as a resource to help the less fortunate. My passion is helping people, therefore, I have spent many years studying theoretical knowledge relevant to mental health conditions; my academic background is in Psychology (mind, brain and behavior). Social work will enable me to observe and treat patients, and it complements my theoretical understanding of mental health. Moreover, there are communities that need mental health services but are short on resources. Ultimately, my goal is to provide mental health services and resources to underserved communities, and Edinboro University is my school of choice to accomplish that.
I first heard of the word ‘Charity work’ when I was a child, my family use to donate every two [2] month to most charity firm in Ghana mostly in the rural areas in Ghana, with this I become submerge to it, as I always have the zeal to. It became my compassion for helping victims of all sorts of abuse and neglect such as, sexual assault, neglect of vulnerable people and fighting for what was right for any individual despite their gender or age. This has motivated me to apply to the London Metropolitan University, social work program. This program can provide me with advance study opportunities in order to help me understand the needs, issues and how to assist people of all culture, race and gender. I bring eight [8] month experience working as a volunteer for some charity firm in Ghana, one[1]
Trauma. Resilience. Empathy. These are the key words that inform my approach to social work. From my personal story to my professional experience in human services, I believe that learning the personal history of individuals, as well as understanding the social injustices that contribute to one’s oppressions is crucial to empower underserved and underrepresented communities. To me, the goal of social work is to identify social and economic barriers, promote systemic changes, and help individuals lead meaningful lives.
Over the past years, I have been working in the social care field, I have come to realize that my passion lies in helping people who are less advantaged, and therefore, I am taking a next step by pursuing a higher education course in becoming a social worker.
My interest in the field of social work began when I was still in high school. I was heavily involved in a church group that focused on social justice in our community of Reading, Pennsylvania. During one of these meetings, I learned about the poverty of Reading and how deeply it affected not only our city, but also the United States in general. After that, I began to become more involved in my Red Cross club and sought ways to address the community through service projects. Before I decided on social work as a major, I had plans to become a missionary. I researched several options and thought I would be best at outreach to at risk youth. It was then that someone suggested I go to college before I pursue a mission. At that point in my life, I was hesitant because I did not strive academically. I still took the advice and applied at a few state colleges in both Pennsylvania and in Vermont.
I’m a current sophomore in the RC, I intend to major in Sociology and minor in Spanish and Community Action and Social Change. After I graduate, I plan to attend the School of Social Work at the university in order to earn a Master’s Degree in Social Work with a specialization in Children and
