Crawling out of bed at 5:30 in the morning is never pleasant. I force myself to go downstairs to the shower, but on my way I see my dad standing in the garage doorway waiting. He sticks his leg out and I bend down to tie his work boot and then I am off to my shower as he leaves for work. I never give it a second thought anymore, as it has become routine. Although, the first time he asked me to tie his shoe stunned me.
I never dreamed of going to college when I was young. I am not from a wealthy family so the cost of college basically ruled it right out of my future. I was always a good student though. I love and excel in math related courses, the numbers just always make sense and there is always a right and wrong answer to every question. So since I was young I knew that is was math I wanted to do in my future.

I want to shoot high and reach even higher, and I don’t want the lack of ability to pay to be the barrier to my aspirations.

Everyone around me knows that I am absolutely obsessed with finding a job in my field of study. I always felt I was an average person. I had good grades, my family is middle class, and I believed that hard work and “buckling my boot straps” would pay off. Boy, was I wrong. I graduated as a Bio-medical Engineer. I believed it didn’t matter what school I went to because my major is respected. I didn’t expect for it to only be respected and not get me a job opportunity. I pressured myself for four years taking 16-18 units in order to graduate in a timely manner. Finally, when I got out the other end I found myself thrust into the world. The world that preached “we need more diversity in engineering”, and “we are always looking to hire women of
