Personal Statement : Mental Health

I have chosen to enter the field of Mental Health Counseling at this particular time in my life because I would like to learn the skills needed to help people with their life and mental health issues. While attending the University of Saint Joseph during my undergraduate years I took various courses that have led me to making my decision. The courses I took focused on business, biology, social work, and psychology. After graduation I decided to take a year off and gain work experience in customer service and health care. I wanted to experience working with the people in my community. I was hired as a pharmacy technician at a Walgreens in Vernon. Working as a pharmacy technician has been a very rewarding experience for me and I learned a lot about people and their unique needs. I also learned about patient care and how to be pacient and understanding under stressful situations.

As nurses, it extremely important for us to have an understanding of mental health so we can decrease the stigma in the healthcare profession. There shouldn’t be a difference between a “psychiatric nurse” and a “general nurse”. Since over 50% of the population suffers from a mental illness, both professions should be equally educated and sensitive towards health care issues.

In light of this, the assignment aims to discuss and explore a service improvement proposal that will improve ‘patient-facing’ outcomes for people with dual diagnosis of a mental illness (MI) and a learning disability (LD). The improvement proposal in question, is specifically, a workshop that is aimed at educating and improving the knowledge and confidence of nurses who come into contact with patients who have a LD, and who may also be experiencing a MI, that may be overlooked or be going unnoticed.

This got me researching and talking to relevant stakeholders about the condition and it exposed me to a lot of people with different forms of mental disabilities and the support systems available to them. I desire to begin my career in psychiatry, and your opening particularly interested me due to the positive word I received from Jane Rutherford within your company. I graduated as a valedictorian within my class at the East Tennessee State University, have a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, and worked my full residency in both the Johnson City Medical Center and the psychiatric ward within the Woodridge Hospital, as is listed in the enclosed resume. A strong case can be made for investing in mental health, whether to enhance individual and world wellbeing, improve life span, or even to enable people living with mental illnesses to have a better quality of life. Mental health problems account for a quarter of all ill health yet they receive less than 6% of all health research funding, people with these health conditions usually experience poor access to help services and lower quality care than those with physical health problems. Addressing mental and physical health needs together would be more cost effective for the NHS and would benefit the increasing numbers of people dealing with untreated mental illness.

I am writing to express my interest in the Master’s of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Walden University. I have completed my application with all of the necessary information included.

In this assignment the student will outline a case example concerning a service user she worked with in her placement having a challenging presentation of co-existing, physical and mental health needs. The student will carry out a holistic assessment, care plan and critically apply evidence based interventions which underpin the recovery approach and Strengths Model that aimed at promoting the well-being of the client etc. Whilst, recovery challenges will be discussed and collaborative approach to care provision will be examined. As a responsible and supportive individual I have considerable experience working within the care sector caring for individuals. I am enthusiastic and feel really passionate about working in this sector. Having worked as a registered nurse and perioperative nurse overseas, and the experience I gained here in England as a care assistant in residential homes with dementia patients and adults with learning disabilities, has enable me to realise the interest and passion I have in this sector of nursing. Statistics show that 1 in 4 people in the United Kingdom will endure a mental health problem at some time within their life, resulting in members of society requiring assistance with their mental Health. Mental health nurses aim to care for members of society with mental health conditions in addition to supporting their families or carers to secure a positive life experience for the people who do suffer with a mental disorder. My personal reason for applying to university to study mental health nursing is that I endured multiple mental disorders since childhood; this had a huge impact on my education, social abilities and emotional health. I went through behaviourist, psychodynamic, cognitive and humanistic therapeutic approaches which gave me a fantastic learning experience into managing, not only my own mental health but other peoples who have suffered mental disorders such as dementia, schizophrenia, anxiety and depression during my volunteer work and work experiences.

What if as a society we began to focus more on preventing chronic disease rather than treating them after onset? This is the question that has driven my interest in public health. I began my undergraduate career as a Viticulture and Enology major. I loved the idea of spending my days in a vineyard, nurturing grapes to maturity and then creating a final product that was entirely different from its humble beginning. It wasn’t until I was working in a lab at a winery that I realized winemaking was not for me. Although I loved the science involved, the career did not align with my social and environmental values. I was passionate about health and wellness, so the social issues of making a product that is abused by millions of people worldwide was not something I could live with. I began feverishly researching careers that would align with my interests in science and helping people. There are many ways to help people so I forced myself to think critically about what was important to me and what ways I wanted to make a difference. Deep down, I knew my biggest desire was to help as many people as possible rather than treating individuals on a case-by-case basis. Once I was able to answer that question, It became abundantly apparent that Public Health was the field I needed to pursue. I received a phone call shortly into my sophomore year of college that my grandfather had a heart attack. I am very close to my grandparents because they helped raise me. My grandparents live four hours away and I was constantly driving to the hospital to see them. My grandfather had to have open heart triple bypass surgery, and I failed my classes for the entire second year. I took the quarter off going into my third year and started back winter quarter. Again, I had no success the next three quarters because I was dealing with depression. Later that year I received the treatment needed to manage depression. Good job on your post! Our interview summaries are different because your agency deals mostly with individuals who have mental illness and developmental disorders. However, in my post, the client’s lack housing, are victims of abuse, runaway youths, as well as dealing with other stressors in their lives. The reason for the differences between our agencies can be because of their locations maybe the demand is higher for those services. However, I do see a connection to how they are the same. For instance, you mentioned that Hillcrest Educational Center provides treatment programs for students (counseling) to help them handle or cope with their issues. At 1736 Family Crisis Center, they also provide counseling services to their participants.

He explained that people who suffer from mental health illness are becoming increasing confident to express what their life is like suffering with a mental disorder and what helps them in moving from beyond the role of someone who has suffered from mental illness, help them to get better and moved from the role of a patient with mental illness. These has become so common now that in drawing a care plan for a service user , you will need to collaborate with service users to draw a care plan that will centre around their needs. Hope, identity, meaning and a sense of personal responsibility emerged as the understanding of recovery from accounts of people

When working with clients with deeper medical conditions our role is to either try to improve / solve the medical issue or, in other cases, to support the clients to be able to live better with their mental issue.
